二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、In five years, European countries hope to end dependence on Russian fossil fuels, and by the end of the year, they look to reduce imports of Russian gas by two-thirds. If Europe follows through on these ideals, the ongoing war could offer an opportunity for and promote one of the swiftest energy transitions in history.

The biggest question now is whether it’s a transition off oil and gas or just off Russian oil and gas. Right now, it seems fossil fuels are winning. Oil companies in the United States are eager for Europe to swap one fossil fuel for another and build out more infrastructure on both sides of the Atlantic to carry oil and gas to Europe. And despite their climate promises, western leaders have shown early support for building fossil fuel infrastructure.

During President Joe Biden’s trip to Europe for meetings of the G7 and NATO, the US announced a new joint agreement with Europe that promises 15 billion cubic meters in new shipments of liquified natural gas this year. That will be on top of the shipments already going to Europe, and will replace about a quarter of the gas imported from Russia.

But the United States is not in the driver’s seat. European countries are the ones that face the real choice between building new fossil fuel infrastructure or speeding up their timeline on clean energy investments. And they could hasten their transition off fossil fuels by prioritizing climate-friendly solutions such as quickening the permission of renewable energy. However, like its leading country Germany, most European countries are not equipped with sustainable nuclear power supply as French, nor are they able to build vast yet affordable wind and solar installations as China. Europe is now trapped in a real dilemma.

【1】What does the first paragraph imply?

A.Europe is facing a turn of energy structure due to the present warfare.

B.Russia provides 2/3 of European energy supply.

C.Europe can cut down 2/3 fossil fuel imported from Russia.

D.Energy transmissions in history always occurred quickly.

【2】According to Paragraph 2 and 3, we can see the U.S. government .

A.wants to help its European allies to transmit energy structure

B.supports for replacing European fossil fuels by LNG

C.hopes more equipment for trans-Atlantic gas and oil trade

D.promises to increase climate-friendly fossil fuels supply

【3】What does the underlined word in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Back down.

    B.Back up.

    C.Hurry up.

    D.Hurry off.

【4】What’s the best title for this passage?

    A.European Energy Shortage: A War-Driven Crisis

B.New Energy Creates New Cracks for Europe-US Relationship

C.United, the West Can Go Through a Winter with Little Coal

    D.European Energy Transition: A War-Pushed Crossroad

  • 27、Recently scientists have made a breakthrough in developing a blood test, which can predict whether someone may attempt suicide (自杀), to prevent hundreds of deaths.

As has been discovered by American researchers, variations (变化) in a single gene can be made use of to predict if someone is likely to commit suicide. Researchers at John Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland, found that the gene SKA2 stopped functioning correctly in people at risk of suicide. The SKA2 gene is found in the prefrontal cortex (前额皮层) of the brain, and is involved in preventing negative thoughts and controlling abnormal (不正常的) behavior. If there isn’t enough SKA2, or it is changed in some way, the body cannot control levels of cortisol (皮质醇). Previous research has shown that people who attempt suicide or who take their own lives have large amounts of cortisol in their systems. A test could allow doctors or psychologists to place patients on “suicide watch” and disable their access to drugs or equipment which they could use to end their own life.

The research was reported in The American Journal of Psychology. “We need to study this in a larger sample but we believe that we might be able to monitor the blood to identify those at risk of suicide. After all, suicide is a major preventable public health problem, but we have been held back in our prevention efforts because we have no steady way to predict those who are at increased risk of killing themselves,” says study leader Dr Zachary Kaminsky, an assistant professor of psychological and behavioral sciences. “With a test like ours, we may be able to cut down suicide rates by identifying those people and intervening (介入) early enough to head off a disaster.”

The blood test succeeded in predicting those with the most severe risk of suicide with 90 per cent accuracy. They could also spot if someone had already attempted suicide with 96 per cent accuracy, simply by looking at the levels of SKA2.

【1】What’s the purpose of the blood test?

A.To help cure those who lack SKA2.

    B.To predict people’s characters.

C.To predict whether someone may try to kill himself.

D.To see whether people get infected by illness.

【2】According to the text, those who attempt suicide ________.

    A.have too much SKA2

B.have fewer amounts of cortisol in their systems

C.have fewer abnormal behaviors than others

D.have variations in the gene SKA2

【3】Which of the following about the blood test is true according to the passage?

A.The blood test is able to accurately predict people with the most severe risk of suicide.

B.If you have ever attempted suicide, you’re sure to be identified through the blood test.

C.The American scientists haven’t achieved every success in the blood test.

D.The blood test could help those at a risk of suicide by raising the levels of SKA2.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the blood test research?

    A.Passive.

    B.Objective.

    C.Cautious.

    D.Doubtful.

  • 29、Humans are not the only animals that bear divorce; some birds go through it as well. A recent study reveals why members of one such species, the Eurasian blue tit, sometimes break their bond.

When ornithologists (鸟类学家) refer to“divorce”, they mean that both members of a breeding pair survive to the following breeding season but end up pairing with new partners rather than reuniting. Great blue herons divorce after every breeding season, and emperor penguins split up around 85 percent of the time. In contrast, just 9 percent of mallard duck pairs call it quits, and albatrosses almost never break up. Many researchers have focused on understanding how these separations affect reproductive success, but until now few have focused on the process itself.

Behavioral ecologist Carol Gilsenan of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Germany and her colleagues monitored hundreds of Eurasian blue tits for eight years, using artificial nest boxes in a protected forest in southern Germany. In their findings, published in Animal Behaviour, 64 percent of breeding pairs split up during the study—even though faithful pairs produced more eggs and reared more fledglings (幼鸟). If both members of a pair returned to their previous territory around the same time, they were more likely to reunite; if they were on different schedules, they were more likely to separate.

“If you turn up early, you can't afford to wait around,” Gilsenan says. “It could be that your former mate is injured or even dead. If you wait, you may forgo a breeding opportunity, so you need to pair up.” Adult death rate in blue tits is extremely high—around 50 percent—so the bird that returns first is more likely to breed again by finding a new partner rather than risk being left out entirely. The birds seem to be simply playing the odds.

The researchers also discovered that if pairs maintained contact outside the breeding season, they were more likely to have synchronized schedules and therefore to remain faithful to each other.

Josh A. Firth, a zoologist at the University of Oxford, who was not involved with the study, says this analysis apparently rules out a number of other possible causes of bird divorce, including low reproductive success rates, infidelity, and genetic or behavioral compatibility. “In wild animal populations,” he says, “divorce can be driven by consequential effects—almost accidentally.”
