27、To wash or not to wash all comes down to the type of haircut you typically get. If you get a dry cut, you’ll want to come to the salon with freshly washed hair.
A good way to tell whether a dry cut is needed is by looking at the type of haircut you’re going in for. If it’s just a light trim (修剪), bang touch-up (刘海修饰), or you want to add a little more movement to your hair with layers (but not much length), your stylist may prefer to do a dry cut. This technique is also more common on straight hair looking for more shape compared with curls or waves.
If you usually get your hair cut while wet, it’s a different story. “Many stylists will select to wash your hair before cutting since most prefer to cut the hair wet rather than dry.” This is especially true when you are looking to remove (去掉) an inch or more from the ends, or are looking to add a lot more texture and layers. If you fall into this camp, you can likely skip the shampoo before heading to the salon.
It’s a little different if you’re heading to the salon for a hair-color appointment and not a haircut. You’ll want clean, dry hair for this type of appointment. “Make sure when showing up for a color application that the hair is dry as well so that the stylist can properly assess your needs and apply the color,” said Rivera.
It’s also helpful to know that you don’t have to wait to wash your hair again after dyeing it to “set” the color, like many people think. You can go ahead and wash it whenever you’d like and the color should stay intact (完好无损), provided you’re using the right color-preserving hair products.
For a hairstyling appointment — whether it be for a big event, wedding, or graduation — you’ll want to show up with hair that’s clean, but not too clean. “Often, with updos (盘发), washing the hair the day before is best because it allows you to come to the salon with completely dry hair that is ready to style,” said Rivera.
Second-day hair is easier to work with and holds a style better, but if you end up showering before the appointment, that’s OK — stylists can always use texturizing spray to give the hair some grit.

28、 You have just won five million yuan in a lottery(彩票)--how would you spend it?Before you know it,ten minutes had gone on daydreaming. There is a time and a place for daydreaming, but we don’t have much control over that.Isn’t it worrying that an estimated 30 to 50 percent of our waking time is spent daydreaming? What if your dentist is having that lottery daydream while removing your rotten tooth?
Some studies suggest daydreaming makes us unhappy because we are not concentrating on what is around us but are instead thinking about the past or future. However,a recent study published in the journal Neuropsychologica finds that mind-wandering can be of benefit to us.The researchers measured the brain patterns of more than 100 people using an MRI(核磁共振成像)scanner. This data was compared with tests on creative ability and a questionnaire on how much their minds usually wandered. Those whose minds wandered the most scored higher in creative ability tests and had more efficient brain systems measured in the MRI machine.
Being efficient at mind-wandering means you can zone out and then naturally tune back in without missing any important point or step.Christine Godwin, the lead author of the latest study from the Georgia Institute of Technology, says that if you are concentrating on difficult tasks, your performance will drop if your mind wanders.”But when tasks are easy, people who have high cognitive ability can let their minds wander because it does not affect their performance. You may be thinking about upcoming goals or problem-solving.These are some of the positive sides to mind-wandering.”
Mind-wandering can vary between being more practical or more emotional. What mind-wandering seems to be best at,researchers say,is coming up with new solutions to old problems. So,it’s not always a waste of time!

29、During my early childhood years, I would spend time with my dad in Alabama, fishing and hiking through the woods.
This is where I found my first box turtle crossing a busy road. I rescued the animal out of harm’s way. Without money for after-school programs and sports, I would spend my spare time catching crawfish, frogs, and making home-made fishing poles.
I would catch small fish, put them in barrels, and use them to catch larger fish, primarily sunfish, crappie, and catfish. I moved back to Chicago in the 3rd grade and became saddened that I was unable to swim at local beaches and eat fish that were caught from Lake Michigan.
When I started having behavioral issues in elementary school, my teachers would send me to my guidance teacher Dr. Deborah Hawes to do math and science projects.
I would intentionally disrupt (扰乱) the class, knowing that I would get sent down to her office for guidance. Dr. Hawes was passionate about science and math. Her goal was to help every student realize the importance of these subjects, and how they relate to everyday living. As a result, she was able to convince me to participate in science fair project competitions.
Surprisingly, I did incredibly well at those competitions and received numerous awards throughout the city at larger competitions. It was after 8th grade that Dr. Hawes convinced me to transfer to another high school which is famous for its agricultural sciences. This by far, was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life.
It was while attending this high school that I became interested in the study of environmental and animal sciences. My time here was what stimulated my interest in animal science and conservation and motivated me to continue my education in a local top university, where I was awarded a partial scholarship.
I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science in 2004. In 2008, I earned a Master of Science degree while conducting research on turtle nests. As a graduate student from 2006 to 2008, I guided high school and college students by helping them design research projects focusing on reptiles (爬行动物).
In 2009, I became the Savanna Districts first-ever Wildlife Biologist. I am stationed at one of the most visited refuges (保护区) in the nation, which attracts millions of hunters, fishermen, and other outdoor enthusiasts from across the nation.
