  • 26、Getting less than five hours of sleep in mid-to-late life could be linked to an increased risk of developing at least two chronic (慢性的) diseases, according to a new study. The research analyzed the effect of sleep time on the health of more than 7,000 men and women over 50. Researchers examined the relationship between how long each participant slept for and whether they had two or more chronic diseases over the course of 25 years.

People who were reported getting five hours of sleep or less at age 50 were 20% more likely to have two or more chronic diseases, as opposed to people who slept for up to seven hours Additionally, sleeping for five hours or less was linked to a 30% to 40% increased risk of multimorbidity (多病症) when compared with those who slept for up to seven hours.

Lead author, Dr Sabia, said: “To ensure a better night’s sleep, it is important to promote good sleep, such as making sure the bedroom is quiet, dark and a comfortable temperature before sleeping. It’s also advised to remove electronic devices and avoid large meals before bedtime. Physical activity and being exposed to light during the day might also promote good sleep.”

Dr Sabia said, “Short sleep increases the risk of chronic diseases that in turn increase the risk of death. However, if a participant has already suffered from a chronic condition, then long sleep time is associated with around a 35% increased risk of developing another illness. Researchers believe this could be due to unnoticed health conditions impacting sleep.” Dr. Sabia added, “This research adds to a growing body of research that highlights how important it is to get a good night’s sleep.”

  • 27、This is an excerpt from a speech at the United Nations headquarters given by Emma Watson, who starred in Harry Potter series.

Today we are launching a campaign (called “He For She”). I am reaching out to you because we need your help. We want to end gender inequality, and to do this, we need everyone involved. This is the first campaign of this kind in the UN. We want to try to involve as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change.

I started questioning gender-based assumption a long time ago. When I was 8, I was confused being called bossy because I wanted to direct a play that we put on for our parents, but the boys were not. When I was 14, I started to be sexualized by certain elements of the media. At 15, my girlfriends started dropping out of a lot of sports teams because they didn’t want to appear masculine(男性化的). At 18, my male friends were unable to express their feelings.

I decided that I was a feminist (女权主义者). This seemed uncomplicated to me. But my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word. Women are choosing not to identify as feminists. Why has the word become such an uncomfortable one? I’m from Britain and I think it is right that I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that will affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men.

But sadly, I can say that there is no one country in the world where all women can expect to receive these rights. No country in the world can yet say that they have achieved gender equality. These rights, I considered to be human rights, but I am one of the lucky ones.

My life is a sheer privilege because my parents didn’t love me less because I was born a daughter. My school did not limit me because I was a girl. My tutors didn’t assume that I would end up nowhere because I might give birth to a child one day. These influences were the gender equality ambassadors that made me who I am today. They may not know it but they are the unintentional feminists who are changing the world today. We need more of those.

Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend you a formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too. Because to date, I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help for fear it will make them less of a man, or less of men. I’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by false sense of male success. Men don’t have the benefits of equality, either. Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive; both men and women should be free to be strong. This is what “He For She” is about. It’s about freedom.

You might be thinking: who is this Harry Potter girl? What is she doing at the UN? I’ve been asking myself at the same thing. All I know is that I care about this problem and I want to make it better. And having seen what I’ve seen and given the chance, I feel my responsibility to say something. Statesman Edmund Burke said all that is needed for the forces of evil to triumph is for good men and women to do nothing.

In my nervousness for this speech and in my moment of doubt, I told myself firmly: if not me, who? If not now, when? If you have similar doubts when opportunities are presented to you, I hope those words would be helpful. Because the reality is that if we do nothing, it will take 75 years, or for me it will be nearly 100 before women can be expected to be paid as same as men for the same work. 15.5 million girls will be married in the 16 years as children. At current rate, it will be until 2086 before all rural African girls can have secondary education. We are struggling for a uniting world, but the good news is that we have a uniting movement. It is called “He For She”. I am inviting you to step forward, to be seen and to ask yourself: if not me, who? If not now, when?

    Thank you.

【1】The campaign “He For She” aims to ________.

A.give women more freedom than before

B.give men more freedom than women

C.her tutors treated her the same way they treated boy students

D.she was called bossy because she didn’t want to appear masculine

A.Good men and women doing nothing lead to the growth of evil forces.

B.If evil forces do nothing, good men and women can win the victory.

D.All that is necessary for good men and women to do is nothing compared to evil forces.

  • 28、There are times when nothing seems to be working in our favor. We may use complaining as a coping mechanism (办法,途经) when we are truly unhappy. However, there are many times when we don’t try our best and just want things to work our way. We may try to cover our faults by complaining about the unfairness of it all. These are expressive complaints where the complainer just wants to let out his/her anger or frustration, with no real intention of solving the problem. The complainer expects pity and recognition from the listeners although the results often disappoint him/her.

Sometimes, we use complaints as a conversation starter. Conversations that start with a complaint often have a domino effect. It may cause the listener to include his/her complaints in the conversation as well, which makes you think that you are not the only one facing problems. However, your good feeling won’t last long as long as you are always focusing on the negative.

When complaining becomes a habit, you complain to anyone that comes around. Negativity that comes from complaining kills creativity and innovation (创新). Habitual complainers are less likely to come up with new ideas, as they are busy finding faults and discourage others from trying new things by making them feel that they won’t work. When you spend time with people who constantly complain, you are likely to view things in a negative light. This will make things worse. This can affect the way you perceive your own situation, and even the people around you.

Though expressing your feelings may momentarily improve your state of mind, it could sometimes have a bad effect on the listener’s state of mind. A recent study has shown that at social gatherings while people who are unhappy may join you when you play the victim at the beginning, the majority would start avoiding you because of your negativity.

【1】Why do people who don’t try their best often complain?

A.They want to get others’ pity.

B.It is the best way to let out their anger.

C.They try to find an excuse for their faults.

D.They hope to get a solution to their problems.

【2】According to Paragraph 2, complaints in conversations ________.

    A.are easy to deal with

    B.can spread to others

    C.may help you make friends

D.help focus on the similar unfairness

【3】What do we know about habitual complainers?

A.They can hardly influence others in their negative way.

B.They can get momentary comfort by complaining.

C.They have a better understanding of their faults.

D.They are more likely to put forward new ideas.

【4】According to the author, complaining at social gatherings is ________.

    A.unusual   B.acceptable

    C.unwelcome   D.frustrating

An hour’s nap at work may help IT programmers to write better code(编码), according to recently published research. So it does the same to children in learning. Traditionally seen as the 1 of older people or the very young, experts now say that a midday nap can reserve information overload,2 information processing and aid learning. These findings from Harvard University have important implications for learning real-life skills, including those 3 with sports, playing a musical instrument and IT workplace situations such as complex software coding.

The studies suggest that the brain uses sleep to restore overused brain circuits and strengthen the 4 of actions and skills learned during the day. They have found that any amount of sleep, even a short nap, appears to improve our ability to 5 information and to learn. As part of the research, volunteers were trained to perform a complex visual task and were then 6 into three groups where some had no sleep, others a 30-minute “power” nap and another group a one-hour nap. The longer they slept, the better they performed. Researchers believe 7 that the brain continues to learn after training has stopped and this learning only occurs during the sleep.
