二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   All the efforts you put into studying at university may not have been enough—because robots could be coming for your job. A new study finds that as many as 800 million workers could be replaced by robots by 2030.

The study from the McKinsey Global Institute estimates that between 400 million and 800 million individuals could be replaced by automation(自动化) or robots and need to find new jobs by 2030 around the world. It estimates that 30 percent of the hours people spend on working globally could have been automated by that time.

Those most affected will be people who work in predictable environments doing tasks such as operating machines and preparing fast food. Those who make a living by collecting and processing data also face a high risk of being replaced by robots. But people who work in less predictable environments such as gardeners, plumbers, and childcare staff face a smaller risk, because their roles are technically difficult to be automated and often command relatively lower wages, which makes automation a less attractive business proposition(商业提议).

However, it’s not all doom for the future of employment. The Study notes that automation sometimes allows workers to remain employed in a different position. “Even when some tasks are automated, the employment rate in those occupations may not decline because workers may perform new tasks,” McKinsey &Company wrote in a release on its website.

It noted that China has the largest number of employees who would need to switch occupations, up to 100 million if automation was adopted rapidly, or 12 percent of the 2030 workforce. The numbers are higher in more advanced economies, with up to one-third of the 2030 workforce in America and Germany needing to switch occupations, along with nearly half of the 2030 workforce in Japan. Countries which fail to prepare workers for transition to new jobs will feel the impact of a rise in unemployment and depressed wages, according to the study.

1Why will lots of people need to find new jobs by 2030 around the world?

A.They don’t put efforts into their study at university.

B.The world’s working population is on the steady rise.

C.They will be paid less with the development of technology.

D.Robots or automation will take the place of their positions.

2Which will be the least likely to be replaced by robots?

    A.Machine operation. B.Fast food cooking.

    C.Childcare in kindergarten. D.Data collection.

3What is the study’s statement about jobs’ being replaced by robots mainly based on?

    A.Estimated figures. B.Public opinions.

    C.Financial reports. D.Website contents.

4Which part does the article belong to?

    A.Education. B.Business. C.Lifestyle. D.Technology.

  • 27、In Kenya, two university students from rural villages came up with a system to recharge a cellphone battery using energy generated from a bicycle. They took most of the items from a junkyard. Innovation and leadership strategist Navi Radjou thinks that such frugal(节俭的) innovation enables socially and environmentally responsible economic development through products and services that combine four qualities: affordability, accessibility, sustainability, and quality. He advises that we should use what is rich to handle what is scarce.

It’s an approach that is having a huge impact. Among things becoming rich in developing countries are connectivity and smartphones. A great example of frugal innovation is Peek Retina, a small adapter(适配器) for a smartphone that lets people perform eye exams without any of the fancy equipment you stare into at your optometrist’s. Another great frugal innovation is Foldscope, a microscope that costs 50 cents to make but can do serious diagnoses(诊断). With the wide use of the microscope, people can be easily tested instead of traveling long distances to see a doctor and a real hands-on science education can be provided for all remote health workers.

Frugal Innovation is a new trendy term for something that has been around for a while; in the 1980s it was MacGyver; in the 1970s it was Adhocism. Basically it involves using an available system or dealing with an existing situation in a new way to solve a problem quickly and effectively. It is a method of creation relying particularly on resources which are already at hand. By getting back to basics, frugal innovation allows low-income populations to play a major part in their own progress.

It may be the same as it ever was under a new name, but there are new tools and new ways of sharing. The new smartphone technology and the speed of communication and spread of information really make this a new age of Frugal Innovation. And it’s not just in the developing world, it can work anywhere. So welcome to the new buzzword(流行词), Frugal Innovation.

A.They can stay away from physical work.

B.They can design their own inventions.

C.They can buy high-tech products at a low price.

D.They can trade profitably with de developed countries.

【4】What makes Frugal Innovation different from MacGyver and Adhocism?

    A.It is for practical purposes.

    B.It is environmentally friendly.

C.It is closely related to technology.

D.It is intended for developing countries.

  • 28、As the drought eased and the water cooled in late August, Barbara, 70, and me, at 71, decided to keep swimming. We have both read Bonnie Tsui’s Why We Swim, a fine book about cold-water swimming. We challenged ourselves to swim for as long as possible through September and into October.

I have long loved swimming, though the fear of being seen as fat has upset me. Cold-water swimming deepened my sense of well-being and let me use my body. It became a ritual Barbara and I developed as swimming sisters. When she returned to the United States, I did not know how I could continue our cold-water tradition. I wasn’t prepared to freeze alone.

There were larger commitments I could not remove. In the summer, we planned to cross from the cove to an island across the lake. I had to stay fit. We also planned to host a cold-water swimming race for locals in the fall. We would make it an annual event, so that, in our 80s, we might swim through October and into November.

With these plans in mind, I joined my local city pool. I had not been in a public pool for about 30 years. But my body said swim, my brain said swim and my heart, could not let go. So I went anyway.

I am swimming. I am alive to my love of the water, alive to my promise for the spring and the summer that will come. We are increasingly aware of the miracle of being able——bodied enough to share the cold——water wonder side by side.

【1】Why was Why We Swim mentioned in Paragraph One?

A.To show it arouses their common interest to some degree.

B.To guide the author to learn to swim at such an old age.

C.To analyze the advantages of swimming in late August.

D.To teach people how to ease the pressure in the drought.

【2】What does the underlined word “ritual”probably mean in paragraph 2?

    A.Promise.

    B.Requirement.

    C.Routine.

    D.Standard.

【3】What did the author do to realize her goals?

A.She participated in a local swimming race.

B.She went to the gym to improve her strength.

C.She became a member of the local public pool.

D.She swam across the lake to the island herself.

【4】What is the main idea of this passage?

    A.Forever friendship among the two.

    B.Passion for cold-water swimming.

    C.Commitments for the annual event.

    D.The benefits of routine swimming.

  • 29、“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

You probably heard those lines in grammar school, but do you really agree that harsh(严厉的) or negative words do not harm us? Words have power. Surely we all have had our feelings hurt by something someone said.

We may not say words to hurt others, but the way we interpret (解释) them and how we say them may cause great harm. Here’s an example:

An ancient king dreamed all his teeth had fallen out. He sent for a wise man to explain his dream to him: the dream means that all your relatives will die and you will be left alone! The king was very angry and threw the interpreter into prison. He then sent for another interpreter who said, “Congratulations! King! You will live many more years. In fact, you will survive all your relatives. Long Live the King!”

Both interpreters gave the same interpretation, but there was a huge difference in the way they said it.

Our speech must be understood by those who hear our words, but the way we say things and the intention behind them have as much power as the words themselves. Words can cause anger or appreciation. Which would you rather receive?

People who say harsh and negative things may not mean to harm, but have you ever known anyone who is a naysayer? They often look at the dark sides of things. They always see the glass as half empty rather than half full. How do you feel when you are around this type of person? Remember: words have power. Use them wisely.

【1】The author mentions the story of the ancient king to show that _____.

    A. one dream sometimes has different explanations

    B. good words can bring good luck to people

    C. people should be careful when talking to a king

    D. different ways of saying things have different effects

【2】The underlined word “naysayer” in the last paragraph refers to a person who always _____.

    A. has a negative attitude

    B. likes to be praised

    C. talks big

    D. likes to repeat what others say

【3】According to the text, how can people understand each other better?

    A. By sharing different life experiences

    B. By accepting different habits.

    C. By properly using words

    D. By recognizing different values.

【4】The passage mainly talks about ______.

    A. the power of words

    B. the cruelty of the king

    C. how to understand others

    D. how to build good relationships

  • 32、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Is Deep-Sea Exploration Worth the Money?

People are generally more enthusiastic about space, but the oceans hold the solutions to some of the biggest problems of the twenty-first century. We must continue to invest in exploration of the deep sea so that we can take advantage of its benefits.

The deep seas contain resources that could bring improvements in the field of medicine. Antibiotics are becoming less effective in the treatment of illnesses, and scientists think that the plant life in the deep oceans may provide a solution. They hope to develop new medicines that will make it possible to fight disease for years to come. Some substances produced from deep-sea plants are already being used in improved medical testing procedures. Recognizing the importance of this research, the 2008 Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry to scientists in this area.

At a time when existing forms of fuel are limited the deep oceans could provide new sources of fuel. For more than 50 years, oil companies have been drilling in areas like the North Sea. Realizing that these offshore resources will not last forever, oil companies are now considering other sources including the huge amounts of oil beneath the ocean bed. However, extracting it safely will require major advancements in technology. Another possible deep-sea fuel source on the ocean floor in the form of ice crystals, scientists believe, could be a fuel source for the future.

Finally, using the deep sea for the disposal of nuclear waste is a controversial issue that needs to be explored further. Some organizations have proposed dropping nuclear waste into the deepest parts of the ocean and sealing it into the ocean floor. Many scientists claim that this process would involve less danger to the environment than current storage methods.

These are just three of the many ways in which leaning about the deep ocean may change our lives for the better. Such advances in our knowledge justify the expense of carrying out deep-sea research. The demand for land is only continuing to grow. The time has come when 70% of our planet covered by water is just too big to ignore.
