26、African American Heroes
Bessie Coleman
The skies had never seen a pilot like Bessie Coleman before. She was the first African American woman to obtain an international pilot’s license, flying to new heights that Black people in the United States had never reached before. But as a Black woman in the 1920s, she faced many barriers because of her race and sex. She would say that “the air is the only place free from prejudice(偏见).”
Benjamin O. Davis, Jr.
Nothing was going to stop Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. from becoming a pilot. Not his white classmates at West Point, a military academy, refusing to be his roommate. Or being banned from an all-white officers’ club, even though he was an officer himself. Or being rejected from the Army Air Corps, an early version of the Air Force, because he was African American.
Ida B. Wells
Ida B. Wells was born into slavery in Mississippi on July 16, 1862. After moving to Tennessee when she was about 20, Wells began writing for Black newspapers, speaking out against segregated schools—which forced Black children to go to separate schools—and other forms of discrimination(歧视) in the southern states.
Katherine Johnson
The stars were always within reach for Katherine Johnson. Using her mathematics skills, she helped NASA send astronauts to the moon and return them safely home. One of her biggest achievements at NASA was helping calculate the path of the country’s first human spaceflight in 1961, making sure astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr. had a safe trip. A year later she helped figure out John Glenn’s orbit of the planet, another American first. In 1969, she calculated the path of Neil Armstrong’s historic mission to the moon on Apollo 11.

27、The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and the environment. These findings come from a new report in the journal Nature.
David Tillman, a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota, America, examined information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how diet affected health. He noted a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations industrialized, population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt(采纳) what has been called the Western diet.
The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating these foods, people began to get fatter and sicker. David Tillman says overweight people are at greater risk for non-infectious diseases like diabetes(糖尿病)and heart disease.
Unfortunately when people become industrialized, if they adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these health problems, especially in developing countries in Asia. China is an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one percent to 10 percent of the population as they began to industrialize over a 20-year period. And that is happening all across the world, in Mexico, in Nigeria and so on.
And, a diet bad for human beings, is also bad for the environment. As the world's population grows, more forests and tropical(热带的)areas will become farmland for crops or grasslands for cattle. We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture than that coming out of all forms of transportation right now.
Mr. Tillman calls the link between diet, the environment and human health, "a trilemma": a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible settlement is leaving the Western diet behind.
【1】According to the passage, more greenhouse gas might be given off in the future from ____________.
A. transportation B. developing countries
C. agriculture D. developed countries
【2】David Tilman believes that__________.
A. diet, the environment and human health are closely connected
B. the Western diet is the only choice as the nation industrializes
C. people in tropical areas are more likely to have heart disease
D. traditional diets are more balanced than the Western diet
【3】We can infer from the passage that ___________.
A. Nigeria has the largest number of diabetes cases
B. overweight people are at higher risk of infectious diseases
C. the examined information comes from developing countries
D. industrialization contributes to the spread of the Western diet
【4】The main purpose of the passage is to___________.
A. call on us to protect the environment
B. warn us of the danger of the Western diet
C. remind us of the importance of health
D. advise us to have a balanced diet
28、Poetry is an interesting form of writing. It is very free, has few restrictions and can be a great way to express feelings. Writing a poem is all about observing the world within you or around you.
To write a poem, first you should begin with an idea or inspiration. Inspiration may come at any time unexpectedly. It may be a specific person, place or thing that causes some sort of strong emotion. It may be more of an abstract idea or release of emotion.
After getting the idea, you can write down everything that comes to mind. Don't think much and let all feelings pour out. Remember everything can be thrown out later.
Then, you can think about its form and begin to organize thoughts. Poetry comes in many forms, from epic poetry that has a story to dramatic poetry intended to be performed. Try them all out. One will come naturally. Maybe different poems fit different forms. When you write a poem, think about both meter ( 韵律 ) and rhythm carefully, which are equally important in poetry. Meter is the fixed pattern of the poem, while rhythm refers to the sound when it is spoken. It is also important to use a lot of descriptive words. Create imagery with words, trying to make them attractive to all the senses. For auditory (听觉的) interest, try repeating of similar sounds in a sentence or phrase. All of this adds life and interest to a poem.
After you finish your work, don't be afraid to share your work with others. When others point out your weakness, accept and grow from it.
【1】When you begin to write a poem, you should first ________ .
A.begin with some specific persons
B.come up with an idea
C.describe a famous place
D.organize your thoughts
【2】We can infer from the text that________.
A.writing poems needs imagination and the ability to use language well
B.people can get more ideas if they often share their poems with others
C.people should first learn to write epic poetry, then dramatic poetry
D.people need to write down every feeling they want to release at a time
【3】After finishing your poem, you are advised to do the followings EXCEPT________.
A.Accept others’ opinion about your shortcoming of the work.
B.Be brave to share your poem with others.
C.Appreciate your work on your own.
D.Grow from others’ comments.
【4】What's the purpose of the text?
A.To tell readers how to write a poem.
B.To encourage more people to write poems.
C.To show what quality a good poem should have.
D.To teach people how to appreciate poems.
29、Recently, scientists have studied the full genetic (基因的) information of more than 18,000 cancer samples(样本). Their study is not the first to do such a complete genetic study of cancer samples. But no one has ever used such a large sample size. Researchers were able to study such a large number because of the improvements in technology.
Over 12,000 samples in the study care from patients gathered by Britain’s National Health Service. They were part of a project to study whole genomes from people with common cancers and rare diseases. The rest of the data came from existing cancer data sets. For the study, researchers looked at 19 different kinds of cancer in the human body. It identified 58 new pieces of evidence leading to the causes of cancer that could help doctors provide better treatment. Now doctors will have much more information to draw from when they look at individual cancers.
Andrew Futreal, a genomic expert at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, said the study gave scientists some knowledge of the destructive forces that cause cancer. Some arise because of problems within a person’s cells(细胞); others are caused by tobacco smoke or chemicals and so on. It also shows doctors what will probably happen over time when a patient develops a cancer with a certain gene changing pattern, and help doctors give earlier treatment and hopefully stop the developing disease.
To help doctors use the new information, researchers have developed a computer program that will let them find common gene changing patterns and seek out unusual ones. By this way, doctors could suggest a treatment based on a special pattern.
【1】How did scientists conduct the study?
A.By making observation.
B.By analyzing data.
C.By asking questions.
D.By doing lab experiments.
【2】What can be learned from paragraph 3?
A.The study actually provides little knowledge of cancer.
B.Doctors are unable to give earlier treatment of cancer.
C.There are physical and environmental causes of cancer.
D.There’s no hope for doctors to stop a cancer developing.
【3】What is the best title for the text?
A.Various Reasons for Cancer
B.Fast Development of Technology
C.Computers Are Key to Medical Research
D.A Study of Genes Contributes to Cancer Treatment
【4】Where does this text probably come from?
A.A health magazine.
B.A chemistry paper.
C.A novel.
D.A history book.
