二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The largest land animal remaining on the earth, the African elephant is of much importance to African ecosystem. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a giant plant-eater, it significantly shapes the forest-and-savanna (大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore deciding the conditions of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.

It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it both a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, as well as pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in not only deep tropical forests but also the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth, which attract a variety of other plant-eaters.

Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants create open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large-hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small-sized plant-eaters to obtain their food as well.

Scientists are worried now that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant dies out, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

【1】What is the passage mainly about?

    A. Disappearance of African elephants.

    B. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.

    C. The effect of African elephants' search for food.

    D. The eating habit of African elephants.

【2The African elephant influences the ecosystem in the following ways except that .

    A. it creates open areas in deep tropical forests as well as woodlands

    B. it pulls off the branches and leaves, shutting out the sunshine

    C. its eating habit can be made use of by large-hoofed and small-sized animals

    D. it encourages some kinds of plants growing in an indirect way

【3According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?

    A. Numerous grown plants are the favorites of plant-eaters.

    B. The extinction of the African elephant has nothing to do with the ecosystem.

    C. Quantities of plants are consumed by African elephants, including branches and underbushes.

    D. The forest floor in rain forests is scarcely dotted with new shoots.

【4The passage is developed mainly by .

    A. presenting the changes in time order

    B. making comparisons and giving examples

    C. classifying similarities and differences

    D. showing the effect and then explaining the reasons

  • 22、Many Beijing residents go to great lengths to avoid breathing the city's smoggy air, especially when it reaches critical pollution levels, but one local entrepreneur decided that canning(灌装) and selling this poor quality air as a souvenir would be a great idea. Believe it or not, he was right.

After seeing a number of companies achieve commercial success by canning fresh air from countries like France, Canada or Australia and selling it in China, Dominic Johnson-Hill, a British-born citizen of Beijing and owner of the Plastered 8 souvenir shop, decided to turn the idea on its head and sell canned Beijing air throughout China and abroad.

"I'd seen people going crazy to buy canned air from Canada and Australia, so I thought it was time to push business the other way," the entrepreneur said. "They' re perfect gifts! What else are you going to take home when you go home from Beijing? A roast duck? A Plastered T-shirt? These cans are light, portable, you can just imagine someone' s face when they unwrap (打开) it for Christmas."

The few mouth-fulls of Beijing air come in standard tin cans featuring a couple of iconic city landmarks as well as a bitter description of the contents: "a unique mix of nitrogen, oxygen and some other stuff". The ironic (讽刺的) souvenirs cost 28 RMB (US $4) and are available at the Plastered 8 shop, as well as on its online shop. But if you're actually considering buying some, you'd better ask shop in advance, as they are virtually flying off the shelves. Johnson-Hill said that his shop is selling hundreds of Beijing air cans every day.

Personally, the well-sold can probably is an awakening for the public to be concerned about the living conditions. Yet one thing that’ s not particularly clear is whether the air is really collected from Beijing, as the cans are labeled as "Made in Shenzhen". There's a big chance that' s just a kind of Plastered 8 humor, as they also list "Choking Hazard" and "May have unidentified objects inside." as warnings.

Anyway, it is probably a unique way to arouse public awareness of protecting the environment.

【1】What contributes to Dominic’s idea of canning and selling the poor quality air?

A.Try to get used to it.

B.Sell it all over the world.

    C.Can it as a souvenir.

D.Try to push business the other way.

【2】How may one feel when receiving canned Beijing air for Christmas?

    A.Satisfied.

    B.Surprised.

    C.Frightened.

    D.Refreshed.

【3】Which of the following can replace the underlined word "stuff" in Paragraph 4?

    A.liquids

    B.objects

    C.minerals

    D.risks

【4】What can we infer from the passage?

A.There are unidentified objects in the canned Beijing air.

B.The Plastered 8 souvenir shop is famous for its humour.

C.People should make efforts to protect the environment.

D.Dominic Johnson-Hill likes the poor quality air in Beijing.

  • 23、Mayor Bill de Blasio designated(指定) the Lunar New Year an official public school holiday in New York City in June, 2015.

The move came after de Blasio in March, 2015 declared school holidays on the most-observed holiday in Islam, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. De Blasio, making good on a promise made during his 2013 mayoral campaign, said students would also have a day off on the Lunar New Year, and not long ago the Asian holiday took place on February 8, 2016.

"About 15% of the city’s school system is of Asian descent(血统), and many student, have been taking the day off as a sick day” said State Senator Daniel Squadron. “It’s a big deal,” he said, whose district includes Manhattan’s Chinatown. “Families have had to choose between their most important cultural celebration and missing a day of school.”

The city’s Department of Education had been working on the practical arrangements for adding another holiday while maintaining the legal 180 school days. The problem was solved by combining two half days that previously did not count towards the total to form a single full day that can be counted towards the total. After San Francisco, New York is the second major urban school district to add the Lunar New Year to the official school calendar.

“This holiday is not about kids just getting a day off from school,” said Assemblyman Ron Kim. “It’s about the City of New York telling hundreds of Asian-American societies that America is a cultural melting pot.” Kim said recognizing the holiday is one way of pushing back against feelings of isolation and marginalization(边缘化) felt by the Asian-American community.

【1】What does the underlined party in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Make use of.  B. Stand by.  C. Keep up with.  D. Go against.

【2】How does New York make the Lunar New Year an official public school holiday?

    A. By cancelling a legal 1-day holiday.

    B. By copying the way of San Francisco.

    C. By adding a new full day to the school calendar.

    D. By changing the legal 180 school days.

【3】What do we know from Ron Kim’s words?

    A. He’s opposed to the new school holiday.

    B. Asian culture is valued most in New York.

    C. Asian culture is part of the American society.

    D. The holiday wipes out Asian Americans’ isolation.

【4】What’s the best title for this passage?

    A. A new public school holiday in New York

    B. A promise made by the mayor of New York

    C. Cultural differences between America and Asia

    D. A revolution of the Lunar New Year in New York

  • 24、For 300 years, the Slims River had been flowing through Canada’s Yukon region. But last year, in only four days, the water in the big river reduced sharply, which made the river almost disappear. What happened?

After a year of careful studies, a group of scientists recently said that the sudden change of the river was caused by climate change. The Slims River used to be a big river, reaching up to 150 metres at its widest points. It carried melt water from the huge Kaskawulsh glacier(冰川) into the Kluane River, then into the Yukon River toward the Bering Sea.

But in spring 2016, there was a sharp melting of the Kaskawulsh glacier because of climate change. It made the melt water run in a different direction, and into a second river, the Alsek River, then into the Gulf of Alaska. It is thousands of kilometers away.

In geography, this is called “river piracy”. Although it was not unusual in ancient times, this is the first time it has happened under scientists’ noses in modern times. The Slims River is almost dry now, which also takes away the clean air in the region because strong wind blows up all the dust in the river bed. Fish have already swum to other rivers. And sheep from Kluane National Park are now coming down to eat the fresh plants.

Lonnie Thompson, a scientist from Ohio State University, the US, said that we could hardly feel the effects of climate change in our daily life, but the case of the Slims River shows what will happen when gradual temperature increases.

【1】Why did the Slims River almost disappear?

A.Because the air pollution brought more rain to Yukon region.

B.Because the climate suddenly became hotter than before.

C.Because the human activities destroyed the banks of the river.

D.Because the Kaskawulsh glacier did not exist any longer.

【2】Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A.The Slims River has now become part of Kluane National Park.

B.The air in the region of the Sli ms Ri ver is still clean.

C.Climate change has no effect on our daily life.

D.Global warming can bring sudden changes to the environment.

【3】In which direction did the water run in 2016?

③ the Yukon River ④ the Alsek River

⑤ the Bering Sea ⑥ the Kluane River

    A.①→④→②

    B.①→③→⑤

    C.③→⑥→⑤

A.A river suddenly disappears without any reason.

B.Two rivers join together to make a bigger one.

C.The flow of a river is suddenly taken away into another.

D.The water in a river reduces sharply.
