二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The Hunan Satellite TV(HNTV) show “Where are we going, Dad?” is a big hit. Many famous stars brought their children to a strange village alone, and they had to spend 72 hours with their children there. The program fully showed us a modern version of the “how to be a good father”. As the young parents today are too busy to take care of their children, this new form of“Lost on the way”played by nanny daddy and cute kids triggered(触发)a lot of people’s emotional resonance(共鸣). Both the kids and their parents will find that their hearts are being drawn closer. But this kind of feeling has just proved that there is a big spiritual barrier between the modern parents and children.

The TV shows like “Children are hard to support!”, “Where are we going, Dad?”, “hot mom” and “cute kids” are becoming more and more popular. All of these show the new parents’ confusion in children’s education and the appeal for the balance between career and family.

In real life, on the one hand the young parents feel helpless because they are too busy to accompany their children under the pressures of work and life; on the other hand they continue to do so. The data collected by HNTV show that nearly two-thirds of their audience are female, among whom 36% are aged from 25 to 34. We can imagine such a scene that one evening a young mother is watching the show with her young children, while her husband is still at work or trapped in socializing, or maybe is just playing computer games in the bedroom. The story of a child without the company of father is still going on. In fact, it is sometimes the same to mothers. In a modern family, it is often the old who take the responsibility of raising a child. The participation of mother in the children’s education is also very low.

It is just this kind of confusion where the parents have gone in the modern family education, and where the parents will guide their children to go that“Where are we going, Dad?”shows us. If a child wants to grow up healthily and safely into a modern citizen with independent personality and free spirit, it is very important for him or her to follow the parents who serve as their first teacher. Maybe this is the real reason why such kind of TV programs could get hot. The truth is that children will go where their parents go; and society will go where the children go.

【1】 Which of the following can be inferred in the passage?

    A. Parents shouldn’t entirely leave the education of children to the old.

    B. 36% of the audience of the program are female aged from 25-34.

    C. The program shows us the confusion where the parents and children will go to play.

    D. In a modern family it is often mothers who are responsible for raising a child.

【2】Which one is the best title of the passage?

    A. Confusion behind “Where are we going, dad?”

    B. Modern Education is Important

    C. Nanny Daddy and Cute Kids

    D. New Problems in Modern Children’s Education

【3】In raising a child in modern society, parents should __________.

    A. play computer games with their children

    B. break down the barrier between children and teachers

    C. balance well between family and career

    D. keep their children at home to avoid socializing

【4】What attitude towards modern family education does the author express in the second paragraph?

    A. Optimistic. B. Proud.   C. Worried.  D. Indifferent.

  • 22、   Earthworms were the beginning of a childhood dream for Jane Goodall. Her mother told a story of going to Goodall’s room when she was one and a half years old.

“She’d found I’d taken a whole handful of earthworms to bed with me,” Goodall said, “and instead of getting mad, she said very quietly, ‘They’ll die if you leave them here, they need dirt.’ So together we took them back into the garden.”

“I never went to university after school because we couldn’t afford it,” she said. Since college was impossible, she got a secretarial job with Louis Leakey, the famed biologist.

It was in the Serengeti plains that Leakey realized Goodall was capable of much more than a secretary. “He just saw that I was very passionate about being out in the wilderness and animals and that I was a good observer,” Goodall said. “Most important of all, he could see I had patience and that I knew how to behave out in the bush even though I hadn’t grown up there.”

Leakey sent Goodall to Tanzania to observe chimpanzees (黑猩猩) in the wild in hopes that their behavior could help explain his research on early humans. Goodall was met with challenges when she faced the chimpanzees. “My first encounters with the chimpanzees were disastrous because they ran away immediately at the sight of me,” Goodall said.

Goodall was surprised by the chimps’love for one another and the bonds between families. She also was surprised when she witnessed one chimpanzee removing the leaves from a small branch and using it as a tool to catch ants.

“At that time, we were defined as the only tool—making creature on the planet,” Goodall said. Goodall sent a telegram to Leakey, who famously replied, “Scientists are faced with two alternatives: Either accept chimpanzees as man, by definition, or else redefine man.” “There is no sharp line dividing us from the rest of the animal kingdom,” Goodall said. “It’s a very blurry (模糊的)line, and it teaches us so clearly that we are not separate from the rest of the animal kingdom, but part of it.”

At 86 years old, Goodall still is educating, discovering and working to bridge the gap between man and chimpanzee.

1The story of earthworms showed Goodall’s mother knew______.

A.how to raise earthworms in the garden B.how to take care of small creatures

C.how to get Goodall interested in animals D.how to give support to her daughter

2What did Louis Leakey see in Goodall?

A.The talent for observing animals. B.The interest in living in the wilderness.

C.The ability to hide in the bush. D.The patience to look after animals.

3Which of the following may Goodall agree with?

A.Humans are completely different from animals.

B.Humans are the only animals to make tools.

C.Humans belong to the whole animal kingdom.

D.Humans have to accept chimps as man too.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Goodall found interest in observing chimps.

B.Goodall devoted her life to studying chimps.

C.Goodall was inspired by her mother to study chimps.

D.Goodall gave up college to observe animals in the wild.

  • 24、Tragedy struck for brothers Rob and Paul Forkan when they lost their parents in the 2004 Asian tsunami. Now, over ten years later, they're using their flip flop business to help other orphans.

The boys had an unusual childhood. They were just 11 and 13 when their parents, Kevin and Sandra, took them out of the UK education system and moved the family to Goa in India. Their parents were of the philosophy that they would receive a healthier and fuller education by traveling the world and helping others. There they did lots of voluntary work and mixed with the local community. It was when the family were on holiday in Sri Lanka that the tsunami hit. Although the children managed to escape, their parents tragically couldn't. But Paul says their upbringing meant they were able to cope with this tough blow. "Our parents gave us this confidence that we could do anything, that nothing was hard to achieve," says Paul.

What the boys did was to start a business selling ethically-sourced sandals. They're called 'Gandys' after the father of India's independence movement, Mahatma Gandhi. "He was in all our schoolbooks as kids; he's on all the money over in India;  he's famous for wearing his flip flops," says Paul. The entire project was inspired by their parents’ philosophy, their globetrotting childhoods and what happened to them in Sri Lanka. Their parents had previously worked in the fashion industry before quitting their jobs and focusing on humanitarian projects. Thus, Gandys is a very fitting tribute to their lives. Gandys sells flip-flops and donates 10 percent of the profits from every pair sold to orphans around the globe. In conjunction with Gandys, the Forkans also founded Orphans for Orphans, a charitable organization dedicated to helping orphans. They say they can make a profit and do good at the same time: they give 10% of their profit to charity, and have set up their own foundation through which they've been able to open a children's home in Sri Lanka.

This year alone, Gandys has sold 250,000 pairs of flip flops, which is only expected to increase. In 2013, the business made around 1.2 million pounds ($1.8 million). With more profits, more orphans will receive assistance. Hence, it’s safe to say that the Forkan brothers are making their parents very proud.

【1】The two brothers left the UK for India because _________.

    A. the UK education system is not so good as that of India

    B. their parents had humanitarian projects in India

    C. the voluntary work in Goa attracted them

    D. their parents expected them to grow through travelling

【2】We can infer from the passage that _______.

    A. the parents had great influence on the two brothers

    B. the two brothers were left hopeless after the tsunami

    C. their parents died soon after they settled in India

    D. the two brothers had a troubled childhood

【3】Why did the brothers name their sandals after Gandhi?

    A. Because Gandhi wears and sells flip flops.

    B. Because Gandhi always helps orphans.

    C. Because Gandhi is influential in India.

    D. Because Gandhi fits into their lives in India.

【4】 What can best describe the brothers?

    A. Unlucky. B. Modest.  C. Generous.  D. Ambitious.

【5】What’s the best title of the passage?

    A. Orphans for Orphans

    B. Making Parents Proud

    C. Gandys: Making Money and Doing Good

    D. Rise Up from Tragedy to Success

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.

Her desk mate,Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group.Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Landy,Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面)”.Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!

Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy,Landy, long as spaghetti”.But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.

One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner,it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!

“What’s the matter with it?”She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act.’“They have a pecking(啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead.“If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”

“Oh,what a poor little thing!”Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped(捧起)the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body.
