21、Nowadays, handwriting seems to become less necessary, for young children learn to tap and touch screens before they have even learned to pick up a pencil or tie their shoelaces. Most of our written communication is done through texting on mobile phones or typing on a keyboard. And voice recognition software is becoming more and more advanced一making even keyboard unnecessary!
So, are handwriting skills important to your child? Actually, handwriting is an exercise in eye-hand coordination (手眼协调), an important part of visual-motor (视觉运动) skills, which are connected with achievements in study. Scientists found that developing fine visual-motor skills in early childhood can lead to not only writing success, but better performance in reading and math in elementary school. It was also found that kids who fail to write neatly and efficiently are often accused of being lazy, and this may affect their behavior and self-worth. Moreover, a study showed that when a group of children were asked to come up with ideas for an article, the ones with better handwriting were more active and had quicker minds. In some ways, handwriting helps their brains' development.
The first attempts at writing can be challenging for pre-school children-- whose fine motor (精细动作)skills are not yet fully developed. But some skills to prepare for handwriting are simple to build at home and in preschool. Parents should provide lots of opportunities for kids to copy and draw shapes and simple pictures in early childhood before letters are introduced. Let your child copy your shapes in sand, or with chalk on a board before trying to draw the shapes on their own. Encourage your child to spend less time on electronic devices and more time on activities to improve eye-hand coordination.
Let's face it - technology is certain to continue developing and more research is needed to find the best ways to teach handwriting to young children. But, there' s plenty of evidence that the handwriting practice can provide young children with a good start in developing skills needed for a healthy and successful journey in school.

22、If you’re in charge of a project, the key to success is getting everyone to want to help you. As a director, I point. I gently push the actors in the direction I want them to go.
In the 1986 movie nothing in common, Jackie Gleason’s character, Max Basner, gets fired from his job as a clothing salesman. The scene, shot on a boat, shows Max’s despair about being out of work. I was looking for some gesture that would allow Max to show his feelings.
Jackie had far more experience at everything than I did, and at first I was frightened. What could I possibly tell “The Great One” about acting? Out of fear I decided to direct by suggestion, and I sat down with Gleason to talk about the scene. “So Max is and, right?” I said.
Gleason nodded.
“And he’s probably still carrying his pens with his name on them – the ones he used to hand out to his customers, right?”
Gleason nodded.
“So what would you want to do with the pens after you were fired?”
He was silent for a moment. “Why don’t I throw them overboard?”
I stood up and turned toward the crew. “Hey, everybody. Jackie has a wonderful idea. Let’s shoot it”.
After filming the scene, Gleason called me over and said with a smile, “Garry, what kind of wonderful idea am I going to have tomorrow?”

23、 I met David in Oslo in December of 2011, in the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize, which was given jointly that year to Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gboweeand and Tawakkol Karman of Yemen for “their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights”.
I was accompanying Johnson Sirleaf as her long-time advisor. David was the special representative for the Financial Times for the Middle East and Africa. Soon we became good friends and partners in many projects.David and I shared a solicitude for Africa, where he found inspiration on the continent when he first visited in the early 1990s—“so much hope and potential,” he would tell me. He chose to travel light. In that way, there would be no limit when he suddenly decided to take a field trip to a village in Sierra Leone to arrange for seven children to travel to France for surgery.
Then David introduced me to his mother, Janet, a Holocaust (大屠杀) survivor, from Nowy Targ, Poland.Janet admired his son so much. But I knew well that the pride David created for her came with a self-added burden—to make worthy her suffering and sacrifice. This was because my grandmother, Manja Pakter Kroner, was a survivor of Berlin Holocaust, and I too lived to make her proud.
In 2014, after two dozen publishers had turned down my book, David agreed to take it on, with his one-man publishing house, Kiwai Media, and his good friend, play writer John Strand, as my editor. The book, Choosing the Hero: My Improbable Journey and the Rise of Africa’s First Woman President was released in May 2016 and earned high praise.
In 2019, David moved back to his native New Jersey, where he passed away while shooting baskets with his eldest son. We lost him much too soon, but I take comfort in knowing that his spirit will last forever.

24、Humans may not have landed on Mars (火星) just yet, but that isn’t stopping a European company from devising a plan to send four people to the Red Planet within the next few years. This project, called Mars One, aims to send a small group of people to Mars in 2022 and eventually establish a permanent colony on the planet.
“Everything we need to go to Mars exists,” said Mars One co-founder Bas Lansdorp in March 2014. “We have the rockets to send people to Mars, the equipment to land on Mars, the robots to prepare the settlement for humans. For a one-way mission, all the technology exists.” Yet the four astronauts chosen for the trip will be stuck on Mars—forever. And despite Mars One’s thorough planning, there are a number of challenges that may prevent the mission from ever taking place. The biggest road block could be the mission's huge cost ($6 billion). However, Lansdorp is confident that Mars One will be able to fund the project by selling the broadcast rights for the mission and subsequent experiences living on the planet.
Those broadcast rights will also play a part in helping to select the people who will be sent to Mars. Lansdorp said the company will hold a selection process similar to a reality show. Lansdorp is expecting at least 1 million applications from people around the world. In addition to the cost, several other potential problems could inhibit (阻止) the mission to Mars.
“It’s even more challenging to send people there with life support, with food, with air, with all the other things like books, entertainment, means of communication and of providing for their own resources for a long stay on Mars,” said Adam Baker, senior lecturer in space engineering at Kingston University in London. “The size of the rockets you’d need to do this would be absolutely colossal.”

26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Anne was so excited that her new teacher Mrs. Allan would be invited to have tea at Green Gables (绿山墙) on Sunday afternoon. She offered to help with the preparation work of Aunt Marilla and decided to make a cake that morning.
All went merry as a marriage bell until Anne’s layer cake was passed. Mrs. Allan, having already been helped to a wide variety, declined it. But Marilla, seeing the disappointment on Anne’s face, said smilingly, “Oh, you must take a piece of this, Mrs. Allan. Anne made it on purpose for you.”
“In that case I must sample it, ” laughed Mrs. Allan, helping herself to a plump triangle.
Mrs. Allan took a mouthful of hers and a most strange expression crossed her face; not a word did she say, however, but steadily ate away at it. Marilla saw the expression and rushed to taste the cake.
“Anne Shirley!” she exclaimed, “what on earth did you put into that cake?”
“Nothing but what the recipe said, Marilla, ” cried Anne with a look of severe suffering. “Oh, isn’t it all right?”
“All right! It’s simply horrible. Anne, taste it yourself. What flavoring did you use?”
“Vanilla (香草),” said Anne, her face scarlet with embarrassment after tasting the cake. “Only vanilla. ”
“Go and bring me the bottle of vanilla you used.”
Anne fled to the pantry and returned with a small bottle partially filled with a brown liquid and labeled yellowy, “Best Vanilla.” Marilla took it, uncorked it, smelled it.
“Mercy on us, Anne, you’ve flavored that cake with ANODYNE LINIMENT(止痛药剂). I broke the liniment bottle last week and poured what was left into an old empty vanilla bottle. I suppose it’s partly my fault — I should have warned you-but for pity’s sake why couldn’t you have smelled it?”
Anne burst into tears under this double disgrace (丢脸).
“I couldn’t — I had such a cold!” and with this she fairly fled to her bedroom, where she cast herself on the bed and wept as one who refuses to be comforted.
