  • 21、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

After years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. 1By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.

Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development. 2. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.

The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk populations — major food sources (来源) for the wolf – grew rapidly. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation , which reduced plant diversity in the park. In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park’ s red foxes, and completely drove away the park’ s beavers. 3.They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets.

The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolvers. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone. Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone. 4. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.

    A. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area.

    B. The disappearance of gray wolves brought about damage to the local ecology.

    C. As early as 1966,biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone Park.

    D. They hoped to keep the conflict between farmers and gray wolves to a minimum

AB. Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park.

AC. Elk, deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback.

  • 22、For outdoor enthusiasts, it is crucial to be prepared for any sort of natural disaster in the open air. 【1】. It includes what kinds of disasters may strike, and what resources should be taken on your trip.

【2】 Desert areas are more likely to be affected by droughts; coastal regions are more likely to see hurricanes; mountainous areas are likely to avalanches (雪崩) in winter and landslides in summer. Therefore, always do some research ahead of time to help you find right survival strategies in different conditions.

While you’re planning, the essential thing to consider is the things you should pack for your trip. Any disaster that may separate you from civilization for a period of time will require you to provide your own food, water, and shelter for at least a few days. 【3】 For disasters that may wet your equipment, flameless light sources are a must. What you bring with you should be suited to the disaster you might encounter.

Once you complete your survival plan, it’s better to review it periodically. When a natural disaster strikes, you probably won’t have time to go over a document or go online to seek advice. 【4】

If a natural disaster strikes while you are in the wilderness, you should put your survival plan into effect immediately. 【5】 Then contact others for help. Do not wait around to see if the disaster is really that serious, do not panic, and do not easily abandon your plan.

A.But this is not always the case.

B.It’s also a good idea to bring light sources.

C.That means having a disaster response plan.

D.It’s also great to consult with the specialists in person.

E.Consequently, revising it frequently is strongly recommended.

F.Different kinds of disasters are likely to occur in different areas.

G.Stay calm, act decisively, and begin working to keep yourself alive.

  • 23、Musicians born after the year 2000 kicked off the Project Spring Bird music season at the Blackstone Music Plus, showcasing the passion and creativity of Generation Z.

The small orchestras were among the biggest surprises in the festival. Each of the pieces in their repertoire (全部剧目)was performed for the first time. Homewood Symphony Orchestra directors and audience alike marveled at the talent of the young performers.

The small orchestras and musicians are the products of a nurturing program aimed at developing the skills and artistic creativity of young talent. It is strongly supported by Mellon Swift, music director of the Homewood Symphony Orchestra. “For young musicians, growth not only takes time, but also a starting point to bigger stages,Mellon said. “We want to help them cross the barriers and explore their artistic passion.”

Young musicians at the beginning of their careers usually emerge from well-known competitions, but Mellon said he wants to see opportunities become more expansive. “We insist on giving them as much freedom and support as possible, so that they don’t get sidetracked by concerns about some practical elements at the beginning of their careers,” he explained. “All they are required to do is to grow artistically and explore their creative potential and ideas, ” he added.

“If a voice tells us:Just do whatever you want, and we will support you all the way, just imagine what kind of potential could emerge?” wrote conductor Karajan, who is only 21, “The future belongs to us, and it can belong to us now! ”

  • 24、   Health and Social Care Secretary Jeremy Hunt has announced that the UK will host the first ever Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit(峰会) in London this October. This global summit aims to put mental-health care on an equal footing with the physical kind.

But there is a long way to go. One in four people will experience a mental-health problem at some point in life. In rich countries mental illnesses account for more suffering and premature death than heart disease, strokes(中风) or cancer. Meanwhile the central-African countries have just one mental-health professional per 100,000 people, a fiftieth as many as Europe has. (Less than 1% of foreign aid for health care goes towards mental health.)

As developing countries handle infectious diseases, mental health will consume a greater share of budgets and attention there. By 2020 mental-health conditions may account for 15% of the global burden of disease, but even in rich countries many people with common problems still go without treatment.

It is clear that mental illness is fast becoming one of the global health challenges of the 21st century. Until recently, this hasn’t had the profile it deserves on a global stage. The ministers gathering in London must produce new money and focus—and not just another declaration. The summit is also expected to help countries learn from each other to find the best ways to deal with increased rates of depression and anxiety among young people.

1Which of the following best explains “on an equal footing” underlined in paragraph 1?

A.Standing up for. B.Being as important as.

C.Standing in one’s shoes. D.Having an advantage over.

2What is the purpose of holding the meeting?

A.To find more foreign aid for health care.

B.To make a declaration on mental illnesses.

C.To solve the physical problems of the youth.

D.To stress the importance of mental health.

3Which disease causes more premature death in rich countries?

    A.Heart disease. B.Cancer.

    C.Mental illness. D.Stroke.

4What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

A.Effective measures should be taken on mental health.

B.The problem of mental illness has drawn enough attention.

C.People in developed countries suffer less mental illnesses.

D.Mental-health diseases have taken up about 15% of the global illness cases.
