  • 21、You can tell a lot about people’s general state of mind based on their social media feeds. Are they always tweeting about their biggest annoyances or posting pictures of particularly cute kitties? In a similar fashion, researchers are turning to Twitter for clues about the overall happiness of entire geographic communities.

What they’re finding is that regional variation in the use of common phrases produces predictions that don’t always reflect the local state of well being. But removing from their analyses just three specific terms — good, love and LOL — greatly improves the accuracy of the methods.

“We’re living in a crazy COVID-19 era. And now more than ever, we’re using social media to adapt to a new normal and reach out to the friends and family that we can’t meet face-to-face.” Kokil Jaidka studies computational linguistics at the National University of Singapore. “But our words aren’t useful just to understand what we, as individuals, think and feel. They’re also useful clues about the community we live in.”

One of the simpler methods that many scientists use to analyze the data involves correlating words with positive or negative emotions. But when those records are compared with phone surveys that assess regional well-being, Jaidka says, they don’t paint an accurate picture of the local zeitgeist (时代精神).

Being able to get an accurate read on the mood of the population is no laughing matter. “That’s particularly important now, in the time of COVID, where we’re expecting a mental health crisis and we’re already seeing in survey data the largest decrease in subjective well-being in 10 years at least, if not ever.”

To find out why, Jaidka and her team analyzed billions of tweets from around the United States. And they found that among the most frequently used terms on Twitter are LOL, love and good. And they actually throw the analysis off. Why the disconnect?

“Internet language is really a different beast than regular spoken language. We’ve adapted words from the English vocabulary to mean different things in different situations. ” says Jaidka. “Take, for example, LOL. I’ve tweeted the word LOL to express irony, annoyance and sometimes just pure surprise. When the methods for measuring LOL as a marker of happiness were created in the 1990s, it still meant laughing out loud.”

“There are plenty of terms that are less misleading,” says Jaidka. “Our models tell us that words like excited, fun, great, opportunity, interesting, fantastic and those are better words for measuring subjective well-being. ”

【1】The researchers turn to social media feeds to _________.

A.help with the analysis of people’s subjective well-being

    B.locate the most-frequently used words

C.prove the disconnect between language and emotions

D.make the prediction method more effective

【2】How did Jaidka know the analysis wasn’t accurate?

A.It didn’t reflect the mood of the entire geographic community

B.It didn’t match the assessment result of the phone surveys.

C.It didn’t consider the features of Internet language.

D.It didn’t take the regional variations into account.

【3】Which of the following statements will Jaidka most probably agree with?

A.Face-to-face communication is needed to ensure happiness.

B.Internet use is to blame for the decrease in subjective well-being.

C.Internet language should be abandoned as a source of scientific analysis.

D.Less misleading words should be used in assessing subjective well-being.

【4】According to the article, which of the following terms would fail to measure subjective well-being?

    A.Fun.

    B.Great.

    C.Good.

    D.Interesting.

  • 22、Parents often think that their kids should be good at studies and do well in sports. That’s usually the case because parents feel that could get their children admission to top colleges. However, Melissa and Mark Wimmer think differently.

Their 14-year-old son, Mike, is a prodigy. He is a member of Mensa, which is the world’s top IQ club. He completed his high school, associate’s and bachelor’s degrees all in three years. That’s not all. He also ran two tech companies, founded a third one that works towards controlling the population of lionfish, an invasive (入侵的) species.

But the parents are proud that they were able to help Mike with his social skills along with his intellectual skills. Melissa told CNBC that people expected “Young Sheldon” before they met her son. Young Sheldon is a television show about a child talent who is an indoor man and lacks social skills. “But once they talk to Mike, they understand that he’s just a normal 14-year-old that happens to be able to do amazing things,” said Melissa.

Mark and Melissa got to know about their child’s intelligence when he entered preschool. A child psychologist told them that their son would need a different course to support his fast-track development. Many parents aren’t comfortable with putting their children with 18-year-olds, but Mike’s parents saw the value in letting their child go through it. “I wanted him to be social and be able to deal with all the different personalities in the classrooms with older children,” said Melissa.

The parents shared that they were able to do this by letting Mike find his own voice and put it to use. “We let him order food when he’s 3 or 4 from the waiter or waitress and introduce himself to people. Those kinds of things are done to encourage him to engage with everyone else and be more comfortable talking to others outside of our environment,” said Melissa.

Thanks to his parents, Mike has learned to get along with young and old alike.

【1】What do the underlined words “a prodigy” in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.A gifted person.

    B.A famous student.

    C.A brilliant biologist.

    D.A successful businessman.

    A.He likes to make friends.

    B.He is a well-rounded man.

C.He is a popular child actor.

D.He is poor at dealing with people.

【3】How did Mark and Melissa discover Mike’s high intelligence?

    A.Through a recommendation from a child psychologist.

B.Through observing Mike’s behavior in preschool.

C.Through participating in a special educational program.

D.Through the information provided by Mike’s school teachers.

【4】What do Mike’s parents do to improve his social skills?

    A.Teach him some communication rules.

B.Encourage him to speak in class.

    C.Place him in social situations.

D.Let him go to school alone.

  • 24、After erupting almost continuously for over three decades — from 1983 to 2018 — Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano finally seemed to lose steam , producing no lava (岩浆) for nearly two years. The stillness ended on the night of December 20, 2020, when the active volcano began erupting lava fountains, gas and steam from a crack in the northwest wall of the Halema’uma’u crater (火山口).

By December 31, 2020, the volcano had erupted over 27 million cubic meters of molten rock — enough to fill more than 8000 Olympic-sized swimming pools — and replaced the existing water lake with a nearly 600-foot-deep lava lake. Fortunately, the magma (岩浆) is contained inside the volcano’s crater and does not bring a risk to people or property as it did in 2018, when the molten rock flowed through a residential neighborhood, destroying over 700 homes.

Residents have, however, been asked to limit outdoor activities in areas with high volcanic smog, which is a form of air pollution created when sulfur dioxide and other pollutants sent out from volcanic activity interact chemically with atmospheric steam, oxygen, dust, and sunlight. While not deadly, it can bring unpleasant feelings to skin, eyes, nose and throat, and it can be particularly harmful to individuals with breathing problems.

Now recognized as one of the world’s youngest and most active volcanoes, Kilauea was initially believed to be one offshoot of a bigger volcano. It was only after researchers discovered a magma system extending over 37 miles inside its crater in 1884 that the volcano was finally accepted as a separate unit.

Many locals believe that Kilauea’s eruptions are caused by Pele, a Hawaiian volcano goddess who lives in the mountain. According to a popular folk story, the goddess was forced to leave Tahiti. Upon arriving at Hawaii, she burst with anger, creating destructive fire caves and volcanoes. While Pele was killed during an historic battle with her sister Nāmaka on the island of Maui, her spirit lives on inside the Halema’uma’u crater.

【1】What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

A.The volcano is located near a lake.

B.Kilauea was completely dead in 2020.

C.Magma seldom erupts out of craters.

D.The 2018 eruption did some damage.

【2】Why were citizens asked to stay indoors as much as possible?

A.The roads were ruined after the eruption.

B.The volcano may erupt at any time.

C.The volcanic smog can be harmful to people.

    D.The atmosphere outside was deadly.

【3】What does the underlined word “ offshoot ” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Branch.

    B.Mixture.

    C.Ancestor.

    D.Product.

【4】What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?

    A.How Kilauea got its name.

    B.Why Kilauea became active.

    C.The origin of Kilauea.

    D.A tale about Kilauea.
