21、At 26, Jane Goodall had no college education or science training. But since childhood, she had been dreaming of working closely with animals in Africa. “All through my childhood people said you can’t go to Africa. You’re a girl.” Goodall said. “But my mother used to say, if you really want to, there’s nothing you can’t do.”
In 1957, the 26-year-old Goodall went to Kenya to work as a secretary. She also arranged to meet the famous scientist Louis Leakey, who was so impressed by her enthusiasm that he hired her as his assistant. She went with him on many trips to the African jungle and in 1960 Leakey sent Goodall to live among chimpanzees in a remote animal preserve, recording the animals’ behavior and interactions.
For three months Goodall made little progress. But she said, “I never came close to giving up.” Her breakthrough came one day when she saw a male chimpanzee stick a piece of grass into a termite (白蚁) hill, then put the grass in his mouth. Afterward she came to the hill and did the same. Pulling the grass out, she discovered dozens of termites on it. The discovery — that some animals use tools — was unknown to most scientists at the time.
Goodall saw chimpanzees exhibit human-like emotions, such as jealousy and love. But she also discovered they were capable of violent attacks against each other.
Goodall received her Ph.D. in the study of animal behavior at England’s Cambridge University. Now she travels around the globe raising money to preserve wildlife. “I love being in the forest with the chimpanzees,” she said. “I’d much rather be there than traveling around from city to city.”

22、 Young Chinese are increasingly making their voices heard and influencing world opinion as they take on more important roles in international organizations and global projects, at a ceremony in Beijing in April, singer and actor Karry Wang was made the national goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme by Eric Solheim, the organization’s executive director.
“The youth are no longer merely onlookers when it comes to environmental action, nor should they be. I will spare no effort in doing everything I can to take care of our Earth, and I invite everyone to join me in generating a wave of positive action,” Wang said in his speech after the appointment. In 2016, Wang widely shared the online Wild for Life campaign, which gained 400 million views. A year later, he publicly spoke out on the urgent need to protect endangered wildlife, calling the animals the “superstars of the planet.”
Beyond drawing attention to wildlife, he called on his followers to pledge to reduce their electronic waste, using the hashtag BEATPOLLUTION to highlight the issue. Within 24 hours, his post was retweeted 1.67 million times and more than 400,000 followers had pledged to reduce waste.
“Our actions will soon be the leverage to change the world,” Wang says, calling on the younger generation in China and around the world to raise their awareness of environmental issues.
Erik Solheim, head of UN Environment says, “It is inspiring to see the strong and determined voice of Chinese youth when it comes to the environment. When young people set their minds to change, it is incredible to see the great things that can be accomplished, We are very excited to work with Wang Junkai to create even more awareness about the environmental problems and solutions for these times.”

23、When you're feeling low or even a little depressed, what do you want to do? The answer for most of us is not very much. Our natural response to a bad mood is to rest with our comfort of choice and hibernate (蛰伏) a bit.
But according to new science, the best way to fight off the depression is to force yourself to get out there and do something new. You might have to drag yourself off the sofa, but this research shows you'll be happier for the effort.
For the study, the research followed the daily movements of 122 study subjects, using the location-tracking features of their phones for three to four months. They also sent subjects regular text messages asking them to report on their mood.
The scientists discovered the more people visited new and different locations, the happier they felt both that day and the next. Variety and novelty seem to lift our mood. “We also find that if we feel better today, we're likely to move around and have more novel experiences and have more experiential diversity the following day," study coauthor and NYU psychology professor Catherine Hartley said.
"These results suggest a reciprocal link between the novel and diverse experiences we have during our daily exploration of our physical environments and our subjective sense of well-being." Hartley commented.
This isn't the first time science has linked new experiences with positive brain benefits. Previous studies have shown that new and challenging experiences light up learning centers in the brain. Just as experience has probably taught you, you learn a lot faster when you get outside your comfort zone. If you've been stuck at home a lot lately, it's no shock that you feel lazy. Your brain is missing out on the novelty and exploration it desires. The good news is, if you can force yourself to do something new, you'll feel you can grow smarter.
【1】According to new science, what should we do to lift our spirits?
A.Explore the outside world
B.Have a complete rest
C.Choose to enjoy our hobbies
D.Stay in the comfort zone
【2】How did the researchers conduct the study?
A.By phoning the subjects.
B.By analyzing the subjects' locations.
C.By referring to previous relevant studies.
D.By tracking the subjects' movements and moods.
【3】“A reciprocal link" in Paragraph 5 means a link that proves ________.
A.strong but temporary
B.weak and indirect
C.beneficial to each other
D.suitable for each other
【4】What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Novelty improves learning effectiveness.
B.It's harmful to get stuck at home too long.
C.Your brain desires novelty and exploration.
D.Exploration is linked with positive emotions.
24、Bee venom (毒液) is a highly sought and expensive ingredient for specialized medical treatments and now Australian scientists have discovered that when the industrious insects become annoyed, their venom becomes even more powerful.
Researchers at Curtin University have noted how behavioral and ecological factors can influence the quality of the venom which is used to treat degenerative and infectious diseases. Their study, published in the scientific journal PLOS, analysed protein found in the venom of western honeybees.
The more proteins found in the venom, the higher the potential quality and effect. To understand the protein diversity of venom and find out what impacted this, the researchers looked at a range of factors including the behavioral patterns of the bees.
“We classify the bees’ anger according to their response to the stimulating devices that collect the venom,” said Dr. Daniela Scaccabarozzi, who led the project.
The bee venom collector has a tiny charge that shocks any bees landing on it and they release information that forces the rest bees of the hive (蜂窝) to sting (螫). “Interestingly, we discovered that the ‘angry bees’ produced a richer, more protein-dense venom. And we found that there was no visible harm to the bees.” Scaccabarozzi said.
The team also confirmed that temperature impacted the venom’s strength. “High temperatures can be detrimental to bees’ activity in and out of the hives,” Scaccabarozzi said. “Of the 25 hives tested, we discovered that the sites with higher temperatures recorded lower venom production.” Further findings also revealed that geographical location had an impact on the composition of bee venom, as well as what stage the flowers were at during harvest when they were consumed by the bees.
Expecting the research to be useful to the medical field and the beekeeping business, Scaccabarozzi says further research will help beekeepers collect a standardized quality of venom to meet growing demand in clinical and therapeutic fields, as well as help design cost-effective strategies for venom harvest to secure its position in the global market.
【1】What have researchers at Curtin University found?
A.Harvesting bee venom is really a tough task.
B.Bee venom is a costly and powerful medicine.
C.Angry bees make medicinally stronger venom.
D.Bees exhibit apparent differences in behaviour.

A.By classifying them.
B.By sounding the alarm.
C.By disturbing their hive.
D.By giving them tiny shocks.
【3】What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Sensitive.
B.Harmful.
C.Fundamental.
D.Alternative.
【4】What does Scaccabarozzi expect of future research?

B.It will develop valuable medicines.
C.It will standardize the venom market.
D.It will help produce profitable venom.
