二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Once the temperatures rise to full-on summer highs, life becomes difficult for pet parents. Long walks, the lunchtime run and road trips, things you enjoy together quite safely for the rest of the year, can become dangerous because too much exercise in hot sun or leaving animals in a car, even in the shade, can cause heatstroke (中暑) which can be deadly.

“Heatstroke is a condition where a dog’s temperature rises to the point where damage to internal organs (器官) can occur,” warns Dr. Cindy Bressler. “This is usually seen during the summer months or in warm climates, and is caused primarily because the dog cannot cool itself quickly enough.”

Because of their fur coats, dogs can’t cool via sweating through the skin like humans and they cool themselves by breathing heavily, quickly pulling cool air into the lungs and pushing hot air out. Overweight dogs are more likely to suffer heatstroke. Signs of heatstroke include breathing difficulty, vomiting (呕吐), high body temperatures and a bright red tongue.

“Dogs do not sweat like humans, and without this natural body cool-off response, they are more vulnerable than humans in high temperatures,” says Bressler. “To help prevent heatstroke, you should always have cool water available for your dog and never leave your dog alone in a car, especially in hot weather. Pets who are outdoors should always have access to a shaded area.”

If heatstroke occurs, Bressler advises cooling your pet with cool water, wet towels, fans and cold air.

“Do not cool them too quickly because that can be dangerous,” she adds. “Bring them to the doctor immediately.”

Cats also run the risk of overheating: “With cats,” says Bressler, “it’s important to include water in their diet as they do not seek out water like dogs do. Cats should always have access to fresh and clean water.”

1Heatstroke is caused to dogs mainly because ___________.

A.dogs are not able to cool off via sweating

B.the temperatures are too high for dogs to bear

C.dogs can’t pull cool air into the lungs quickly

D.dogs can’t cool themselves by breathing heavily

2What can we learn about heatstroke?

A.It can be harmful to internal organs.

B.It can pull cool air into the lungs.

C.It only occurs during the summer months.

D.It happens to dogs more often than to cats.

3What should we do for a pet to prevent heatstroke?

A.Leave it alone in a car. B.Have cool water available for it.

C.Bring it to the doctor frequently. D.Cool it with cold air quickly.

4The underlined word “vulnerable” in Paragraph 4 means ___________.

    A.changeable B.comfortable C.likely to survive D.easily hurt

  • 22、   One way to prevent anxiety from getting out of control is to recognize its benefits. It is a mistake to think that we can make better decisions if we keep our feelings under control. Instead, a mix of feelings like anxiety and logical thinking leads to sound decision-making. There is plenty of research showing that higher levels of anxiety can make us more likely to avoid risks in our decision-making. There is also evidence that anxiety can increase the attention you pay to relevant information.

Recent studies have shown that people who are anxious about their relationships (for example, they fear to be abandoned) tend to be better at recognizing people who tell lies and are more likely to raise the alarm when danger approaches.

In the real world though, it's worth realizing that feeling anxious for a while is very common. It helps you communicate with others that you care about, and what's more, it's probably a sign that you are intelligent. At least two published studies have identified that people who score higher on measures of anxiety also tend to perform better on intelligence tests. This seems reasonable: If you're a thinker, you are sure to be always thinking about the future and imagining possible plots, including bad ones.

The important thing, if you are a person likely to worry, is not to let your fear destroy your dreams. And don't bury your head in the sand. Instead, act on your fears—do research as well as preparation. So rather than walk blindly into what you fear, why not meet challenges in full readiness?

When anxiety beats you, or casts a shadow over your life, this is a serious problem. No one is denying that. But like everyday anxiety of this kind that you feel before a presentation or interview, you needn't see it as your enemy. Anxiety is an important feeling, developed through evolution. As for people who are fairly anxious by nature, there is a reason to cheer, too. Your nerves are a sign of your watchfulness. Listen to them and act on them. Then you can turn your nervousness into your advantage.

1What can we infer about anxiety from Paragraph 1?

A.It enables us to be more focused.

B.It stops us from thinking logically.

C.It makes us more willing to take risks.

D.It is the only reason for all bad decisions.

2What can we learn from the passage?

A.Anxious people are less sensitive to danger.

B.Anxious people have difficulty discovering liars.

C.Feeling anxious is more likely to put people at risk.

D.Feeling anxious occasionally is a sign of intelligence.

3How should we deal with anxiety in the author's opinion?

A.By regarding it as our enemy.

B.By taking action to control it.

C.By avoiding being defeated by it.

D.By treating it as a minor feeling.

4What is the theme of the passage?

    A.Effective ways to prevent anxiety.

    B.Unexpected benefits of anxiety.

C.Tips on how to keep a good mood.

    D.Common misunderstandings about anxiety.

  • 23、   The Bialowieza Forest, which grows along the border of Poland and Belarus(白罗斯), is all that remains of the primeval(原始的) forest which once covered Europe. A World Heritage site since 1979, the forest covers an area of 550 square miles. Wolves prowl(潜行) beneath the ancient trees. Running closer to the ground are least weasels(伶鼬). They come in two types. One wears a brown coat all year. The other sheds its brown coat each autumn and turns bright white. It is believed to be an adaptation to help it blend in with snow.

However, there was no snow cover when biologist Karol Zub, at the Polish Academy of Sciences, observed an entirely white weasel hunting rodents(啮齿动物). 1 “At this very moment, I thought to myself. Wowl if this animal is so well visible, it must be a perfect target for predators,” Zub said.

His instincts were right 2 Zub and his colleagues analyzed weather data in the Bialowieza Forest going back to 1967. The average period with permanent snow cover decreased from about 80 days per year to 40 days. Historically, the snow cover disappears around Mar. 15. But in recent years, it disappeared by Feb. 21, more than three weeks earlier in the season. And there are fewer white weasels are about four to five times lower than then years ago.

As the number of days without permanent snow cover increased, the proportion of white weasels dropped dramatically. This crop is a case of what wildlife biologists call “camouflage(伪装) mismatch.” 3 Camouflage mismatch may cause the local extinction of white weasels, or at least a severe reduction in population.

4 Those who blend in live longer. Individuals who clash with their environment get eaten. There are 21 species known to change the color of their coats in winter. Zub predicts the other coat-changers are faring(遭遇) as badly as the humble weasel.

Life on Earth is reacting to climate change. Bears appear to be hibernating for fewer days. Tropical fish are swimming away from the equator in search of cooler waters. Some animals have moved up into the mountains to escape increased temperatures. But camouflage mismatch might be one of the worst effects. After all, it’s hard not to notice a flash of white fur in a dark forest.

  • 24、I'll admit I've never quite understood the obsession (难以破除的成见) surrounding genetically modified (GM) (改变) crops. To environmentalist opponents,GM foods are simply evil,an understudied, possibly harmful tool used by big agricultural businesses to control global seed markets and beat local farmers. They argue that GM foods have never delivered on their supposed promise, that money spent on GM crops would be better channeled to organic farming and that consumers should be protected with warning labels on any products that contain genetically modified ingredients. To supporters,GM crops are a key part of the effort to sustainably provide food to meet a growing global population. But more than that, supporters see the GM opposition of many environmentalists as fundamentally anti-science,no different than those who question the basics of man-made climate change.

For both sides,GM foods seem to act as a symbol: you're pro-agricultural business or anti-science.But science is exactly what we need more of when it comes to GM foods, which is why I was happy to see Nature devote a special series of articles to the GM food controversy. The conclusion: while GM crops haven’t yet realized their initial promise and have been dominated by agricultural businesses, there is reason to continue to use and develop them to help meet the enormous challenge of sustainably feeding a growing planet.

That doesn't mean GM crops are perfect,or a one-size-fits-all solution to global agriculture problems. But anything that can increase farming efficiency—the amount of crops we can produce per acre of land—will be extremely useful.GM crops can and almost certainly will be part of that suite of tools, but so will traditional plant breeding, improved soil and crop management—and perhaps most important of all, better storage and transport infrastructure (基础设施) especially in the developing world.(It doesn't do much good for farmers in places like sub-Saharan Africa to produce more food if they can't get it to hungry consumers.) I'd like to see more non-industry research done on GM crops—not just because we'd worry less about prejudice, but also because seed companies like Monsanto and Pioneer shouldn't be the only entities (实体) working to harness genetic modification.I'd like to see GM research on less commercial crops, like corn.I don't think it's vital to label GM ingredients in food, but I also wouldn't be against it—and industry would be smart to go along with labeling, just as a way of removing fears about the technology.

Most of all, though,I wish a tenth of the energy that's spent endlessly debating GM crops was focused on those more pressing challenges for global agriculture. There are much bigger battles to fight.

1How do environmentalist opponents view GM foods according to the passage?

    A. They will eventually ruin agriculture and the environment.

    B. They are used by big businesses to dominate agriculture.

    C. They have proved potentially harmful to consumers' health.

    D. They pose a big threat to current farming practice.

2What does the author say is vital to solving the controversy between the two sides of the debate?

    A. Breaking the GM food monopoly (垄断).   B. More friendly exchange of ideas.

    C. Regulating GM food production.   D. More scientific research on GM crops.

3What is the author's view on the solution to agricultural problems?

    A. It has to depend more and more on GM technology.

    B. It is vital to the sustainable development of human society.

    C. GM crops should be allowed until better alternatives are found.

    D. Whatever is useful to improve farming efficiency should be encouraged.

4What does the author think of the ongoing debate around GM crops?

    A. It arises out of ignorance of and prejudice against new science.

    B. It distracts the public attention from other key issues of the world.

    C. Efforts spent on it should be turned to more urgent issues of agriculture.

    D. Neither side is likely to give in until more convincing evidence is found.

  • 25、Warning: Don't make big decisions from high elevations

You definitely don't want to have your head in the clouds when making a crucial financial decision. But who could have thought our decisions are literally influenced by altitude?

It seems that what floor you happen to be on matters when pondering something over. If it's a high elevation, like the top floor of an office tower, chances are you'll embrace________a little more than you would on the ground floor, according to researchers from Miami University. The study, published this month in the Journal of Consumer Psychology, suggests you may want a(n) ________ advisor to work from a ground-floor office rather than the penthouse(顶楼). And it gives new, literal________to the idea that you should stay grounded when making big decisions. "When you increase elevation there is a(n) ________effect on the sense of power," lead author SinaEsteky, PhD, noted in a release. "This heighted feeling of power________more risk-seeking behaviour."

For the study, Esteky's team interviewed people as they were ascending and descending in the glass elevator of a tall building. They found the________of the elevator strongly influenced the level of risk-aversion(风险预防)among participants. They were more likely, ________, to take more gambles on the way to the 75th floor -- but their decision became far more grounded as they neared, well, the ground.

Another experiment________on people who were either on the ground floor or the third floor of a university building. Each group was asked to make 10 decisions of________risk levels. Guess which group made the most risky decisions? What was it about higher elevations that emboldened(赋予勇气)the participants? Researchers theorized it could have something to do with perception that elevation gives people a(n) ________of power and bravery.

Risk seems a lot smaller when seen from above----literally. That idea seemed to hold________in further experiments. What participants were told their decisions were being influenced by elevation, the effect________disappeared. Likewise, "elevation effect" wasn't a factor at all for people confined to cubicles who couldn't see how high up they were.

"The important lesson is that when people become aware of the________impact of elevation, it doesn't happen anymore," Esteky says. "The brain is very sensitive to subtle________factors, but also really good at correcting for such effects, so________can help us be more rational in our decisions."

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On an ordinary Thursday afternoon, I turned up the next walkway. Children played in the yards along the block. I waved to them as I walked by, delivering mail at houses along the way.

Some mailmen preferred routes where they drove a truck and slipped the mail into a collection of mailboxes without seeing anyone face to face. Not me. I wanted to be outside talking to people. That's where the excitement was. The lady who lived there opened the door wide. “Hello,” she said. I knew what she was waiting for. I've got your book club selection,” I said, handing over her package.

There were only about 700 people on my route. Over the years I'd gotten to know most of them, if not in person then by their mail. There were the folks who got magazines, or book after book, those who loved their catalogues, and some who had steady pen pals. I knew I provided an important service in my job. College acceptances, birthday presents, postcards from all corners of the world — they could all make someone's day. I also brought doctor bills and insurance notices.

Mrs. Dorman at the end of my route got a package from the Home Shopping Network almost every day. She was an older lady, who'd turned 78, and I liked being able to bring a little joy into her life with my delivery. She got her blood pressure pills and blood test kits for diabetes (糖尿病) in the Yesmail. Yes, convenient. But I was just the messenger, showing up every day like clockwork. It wasn't me who was making a difference in people's lives. Not me personally. A friendly hello, a chat with a lonely person. That was the most I could offer.

I dug in my bag for Mrs. Dorman's mail — and the inevitable Home Shopping Network package. She'd be glad to get this, whatever it was. Mrs. Dorman often waited for me at the door and we always had a nice talk, but not today.
