二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、There are several reasons to use canvas (帆布) grocery bags or reusable grocery bags made from other materials. 【1】 They point out reusable bags can be a small change with a big difference.

From an environmental perspective, canvas grocery bags are better choices than paper or plastic bags. 【2】 Besides, turning to reusable supplies is viewed as greener than using disposable (一次性的) products, many of which wind up in landfills because a community lacks the ability to recycle them.

Plastic grocery bags have a number of environmental drawbacks. When plastic grocery bags end up in the natural environment, they can cause a wide range of problems. Animals may choke on or be trapped in such bags. 【3】 While the bags may eventually break down, they can poison a large number of sea creatures along the way. Paper bags will biodegrade much more quickly, but they still require the use of timber, a resource which some people would prefer to see left in forests

It may be upsetting to lose a batch of groceries due to a poorly-constructed grocery bag 【4】 . They can also be easily washed in the event of leaks.

【5】 For example, they can be used to pick up books at the library or carry other shopping, and they make great beach bags because of their wash ability. For people who don’t want to carry a grocery store logo, canvas grocery bags can be turned inside out and left plain or painted with new designs, and some companies sell plain bags which people can dye or decorate to taste.

A.Many grocery stores carry canvas grocery bags.

B.You only have to buy a canvas grocery bag once.

C.However, canvas grocery bags can hold more weight.

D.Canvas grocery bags have uses beyond the grocery store.

E.What’s worse, plastic can stay in the ocean for thousands of years.

F.Canvas is more environmentally friendly to produce than paper or plastic.

G.Some environmental organizations have been pushing for the use of such bags.

  • 22、Researchers have long sought ways to design air conditioning systems that can work without such greenhouse gases as HFCS, but none has come close to being a direct replacement. A small Irish company, however, now states to have come up with an answer.

Exergyn, based in Dublin, has been working on a 60kw prototype(原型机)which not only avoids HFCS, but also has the benefit of having few moving parts. The system uses a material called a shape-memory alloy(合金). SMAS, as they are known for short, have the unusual ability to return to a predetermined shape when heated. The SMAS produce heat when their shapes are changed by compression(压缩), and then absorb it when the pressure is gone and they return to their original shapes.

Tony Ennis, Exergyn’s chairman, says this method of cooling is not only more environmentally friendly than an HFCS system, but will also be less expensive to buy and 30%~40% cheaper to run. It will be lighter and smaller, too. As for reliability, he says the prototype’s performance suggests the unit could operate for more than 40 years without a problem.

When Dr. O’Toole, an expert in memory materials, cofounded Exergyn in 2012, his intention was to use the SMAS to create a system that would turn low grade waste heat into electricity. But the challenges presented by HFCS persuaded him that air conditioning would be a quicker way to bring the technology to market. Development is still continuing, but products may be only a few years away.

He has not given up thoughts of producing electricity. He even wants to expand its application to other products, such as refrigerators and heat pumps to absorb heat from the ground for home heating. When time allows, Dr. O’Toole and his colleagues hope to get to work on those ideas, too.

【1】What does the underlined word “predetermined” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.more expensive

    B.more reliable

    C.bigger

    D.heavier

【3】Which product did Exergyn want to apply the SMAS to in 2012?

    A.Heat pumps.

    B.Air conditioning systems.

    C.Refrigerators.

    D.Waste-to-energy systems.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

  • 23、You jerk(猛然一动)awake in the middle of the night in confusion. Is there a figure standing in the corner of the room? Your brain begs your legs to move, but nothing happens. The anxiety increases. Your eyes scan the room. Just as you’re about to hit peak panic, you sit up and the figure disappears.

You’ve just experienced sleep paralysis(瘫痪), which is the name experts give to all sorts of weird things that occur during sleep. It happens when the brain temporarily disables the body to prevent it from acting out the vivid dreams occurring during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. It often comes with a feeling of immobility, and a sense of choking. The good news is, it’s absolutely normal, even if it’s terrifying.

But when sleep paralysis happens outside of deep sleep—when a person is just dozing off—it can be “disruptive of the architecture of sleep,” said Baland Jalal, a researcher who investigates the phenomenon. That could lead to more sleep paralysis.

While not everyone who has sleep paralysis experiences hallucinations(幻觉), seeing a person or a ghost in the room is the most common vision, said Jalal. The mechanisms behind sleep paralysis remain unclear, but research indicates that certain risk factors may increase the likelihood of experiencing a jerk, including extreme exercise before sleep, inadequate sleep, emotional stress and worry, and excessive stimulant consumption (like caffeine and nicotine), especially later in the day.

“For most people, it is not indicative of any kind of disease. If you are really worried about it, regular sleep and other simple relaxation techniques, like meditation, deep breathing and yoga, may help,” said Dr. Nathaniel Watson, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. While the experience feels frightening, the episodes last only a few seconds or minutes at most. Most people slip out of it as quickly as they fell into it, he said.

    【1】What is sleep paralysis?

A.A frightening dream that interrupts sleep.

B.A physical symptom of anxiety disorders.

C.A mental disease that affects sleep quality.

D.A brief state of being conscious but frozen.

【2】What do people who have sleep paralysis often experience?

    A.Involuntary cough.

    B.Unreal sensation.

    C.Sharpened vision.

    D.Sustained immobility.

【3】What does Dr. Nathaniel Watson say about sleep paralysis?

A.It is caused by inadequate sleep.

B.It can be a warning signal of diseases.

C.It is a temporary disturbing experience.

D.It can be prevented by extreme exercise.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A.Common Myths About Sleep Paralysis

B.Sleep Paralysis: How It Affects Sleep Patterns

C.Ways to Prevent and Cope with Sleep Paralysis

D.Sleep Paralysis: Why We Jerk Awake and Can’t Move

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Caitlyn stepped into the warm, wet sand and wiggled her toes. The white, foamy waves raced over her feet and up her legs and then pulled back again. Caitlyn loved playing in the ocean water.

“Ouch!” said the girl, as her foot stepped on something hard. She looked down. At the bottom of the ocean was a large shell. Caitlyn bent down to pick it up. It was a pretty pink conch shell with points and curves and an opening that looked like a horn. She held it up to her ear, hoping to hear the whooshing sound for which they were known. Instead, she heard something quite different.

“Hey kid! How are you doing? Want to hear a joke?”

Caitlyn nearly dropped the shell. Holding it back up to her head, she tried again.

“What’s the most musical part of a fish?” the shell asked.

    “I – I don’t know,” Caitlyn whispered.

“Their scales! Ha, ha!” laughed the shell. Caitlyn looked around to see if anyone was looking at her. They weren’t.

“I’m just getting warmed up, kid! Why don’t fish play basketball?” It seemed to be waiting for a reply.

“Uh, I’m not sure?” Caitlyn said. Was she dreaming?

The shell answered its own joke. “Because they are afraid of the net! Ha, ha!” Caitlyn had to laugh. Okay, that was sort of funny.

The girl giggled. On and on the conch shell talked with her. For the rest of the week, Caitlyn would walk into the shallow water and sit with the shell held against her ear.She smiled and chuckled as it whispered corny jokes.

On the last day of her vacation, Caitlyn decided she couldn’t leave the shell behind. “You’re coming home with me,” she said to the pretty shell. She thought it would be happy. It wasn’t. “My home is in the ocean,” it replied, without any laughter in its voice.
