二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A dog spent the last four years of his life waiting at a crossroad in the Thai city of Khon Kaen as if waiting for someone. At first people thought the dog had been abandoned, but then realized that he looked healthy, so people asked around about him. It turned out that the dog had indeed been spending most of his time around that crossroad, but a woman had been coming round regularly to bring him food and water.

One day, while photographing the dog everyone called Leo, a reporter met the woman who had been taking care of him. She had come to drop off some food. After learning the story about the dog and the woman, the reporter decided to share the story on social media. The post soon went viral and the photos of Leo got shared hundreds of times. And the photos reached the eyes of Leo’s old owner.

Nang Noi Sittisarn, a 64-year-old woman from Thailand’s Roi Et Province, almost had a heart attack when her daughter showed her a photo of the beloved dog named BonBon she had lost during a car trip. When she learned that he had been waiting for her in the same spot for the last four years, her heart melted (融化).

Auntie Noi told her daughter to drive her to where the dog was waiting. When she got there and called his name. BonBon, the poor dog started wiggling (扭动) his tail and came to her, but when she tried to take him home with her, he was unwilling to follow. She didn’t want to force the dog to come with her so she agreed to leave him with his new master. However, she and her daughter will come to visit him regularly.

  • 22、It scarcely seems surprising that learning to underline a modal verb, such as “can”, and “may”, does little to help students use them effectively in their own writing. These words are anyway grasped by tiny children without the need to know what they are called. This may tempt the conclusion that the teaching of grammar should be shelved altogether. But there are reasons to reform it rather than throw it away.

Understanding of language is part of a wider education in what makes human beings human. How concepts are turned into sounds, and how those sounds combine to form commands or questions, are issues that have occupied many language experts. What they reveal about the mind has exercised psychologists and cognitive scientists.

There are practical reasons to ask children to work hard at grammar, too. One is that a knowledge of it will make learning a foreign language easier. Even if you did know by nature how to make clauses in your native languages as a child — just without instruction — getting to grips with them in German or Russian in later years is simpler if you know how to define and spot them. As it is, many English-speakers come to understand grammar by studying a foreign language, rather than the other way round.

For grammarians keen on future jobs, the natural-language processing field is booming. After many years of poor results, technological wizards have developed programs for automated translation, speech recognition and other services that are actually usable, if far from perfect. These tools may rely more on knowledge of artificial intelligence than of the subjunctive, but linguistic expertise still matters, and may give beginners an edge over competitors whose best language is Python (一种编程语言).

Grammar could still be taught better. One small study showed improvement in some students when concepts are linked concretely to writing tasks. A cook does not need to know chemistry to make a delicious soup. But the science of how words combine to make meaning is fascinating and fundamental.

【1】Why do some people consider stopping teaching grammar?

A.It’s unnecessary for kids to grasp modal verbs.

B.Teachers’ teaching methods are far from satisfactory.

C.Drawing lines under words fails to be effective in learning.

D.Grammar Learning doesn’t bring obvious effect to writing.

【2】When it comes to future jobs, grammarians believe __________.

A.a good command of Python is enough for programmers

B.the field of artificial technology still shows great promise

C.being expert in language means advantages in competition

D.computer geniuses will invent perfect tools to process language

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards grammar teaching?

    A.Positive.

    B.Negative.

    C.Objective.

    D.Skeptical.

【4】What’s the main idea of this passage?

A.Grammar teaching shouldn’t be stopped but reformed.

B.Scientific study of human beings benefits from grammar.

C.Grammar helps children to learn foreign languages better.

D.There’s much room for improvement in grammar research.

This week at the British Science Festival, Prof Rory Wilson of Swansea University has been revealing (揭示) the secrets of the animal kingdom, including penguins’diving habits and the emotional(情感的) states of elephants.

“The problem with animals is that we often want to know things about them that they don’t want to tell us or that aren’t easy to find out. The only way to do it is to put something on the animal that will accompany it,” Prof Wilson said. Addressing a crowd of journalists, Prof Wilson said his work was all made possible by a small electronic chip (芯片) his team developed specifically to monitor animals in their private hours.

This chip contains pressure, temperature and light sensors—offering an extraordinary view of an animal’s life. The chip, Prof Wilson explained, does exactly what our smartphones or fitness monitors do, continually tracking and recording the wearer’s position and movements. “This is a novel written by an animal. It’s very exciting to be the first person to open that novel.” This earlier chip was about five times larger than the current version, 27mm across and 4mm thick—and weighing 1.2g.

So far the group at Swansea has recorded the lives of more than 1,000 animals and 100 different species. Prof Wilson said the whole enterprise was a team effort. His group consists of academics, postdocs and students, who spend months searching through all the data collected by the chips.

Presenting results from a chip on a penguin in Argentina, he said the penguin was a personal favorite; he still analyzes these birds’ data himself. Looking at the huge screen in Prof Wilson’s lab, we could see the penguin’s individual steps. A change in movement and a drop in temperature indicate the exact moment of a dive into the water. The sensors within the chip are so accurate that they can easily detect behaviors that humans might not notice—even offering deep understanding into some animals’ emotional state.

Think of the way we humans walk. If someone is happy, this can be reflected in our physical behavior—it is often said that they “have a spring in their step”. To observe if this sort of phenomenon also occurs in animals, Prof Wilson’s team analyzed the walking movement of elephants in a zoo. They realized that an elephant walking towards something it liked would walk in a particular way. When that same elephant though was made to go away from the thing it liked, it would walk in a different manner. “How well you can predict the behavior of animals and protect them is dependent on how well you understand the rules by which they’re working.” Prof Wilson said.

【1】According to Prof Wilson, what contributes most to his team’s discovery?

    A. The cooperation of experts from different fields.

    B. The use of a special electronic chip.

    C. The personal interest in penguins.

    D. The special way of data analysis.

【2】It can be learned from the passage that the sensors can ________.

    A. evaluate stress resulting from animals’ fighting

    B. examine penguins’ unusual behavior while diving

    C. distinguish different walking manners of elephants

    D. provide information about the animals’ inner feelings

    【3】Monitoring animals’ behavior helps ________.

    A. set rules for them

    B. control their behavior

    C. change their habits

    D. understand and protect them

【4】Which is the best title of the passage?

    A. Inspiring ‘Novels’ Written by a Group from Swansea University

    B. Pioneering ‘Diaries’ Uncover the Secret Lives of Animals

    C. Penguins and Elephants Tracked for Emotional State

    D. Scientists Made a Breakthrough in Animal Study

  • 24、It might be strange to wear clothes made out of plastic bottles. But in fact some clothing companies are already making such clothes.

Fashion brand JUMA recently showed its newest collection at a workshop in Shanghai. Eighteen clothing items from the collection, including jump-suits, jackets, shirts and dresses, were made from recycled plastic bottles. “We realized that billions of water bottles were being thrown into landfills and oceans every year and that these bottles take hundreds of years to decompose (分解). We thought we should use them to create our clothes and help the environment,” said Alia Juma, the company’s design director.

Many other fashion companies are finding similar ways to save our planet these days. The process is rather simple. First, the plastic bottles are washed and cut into small pieces. Then they are melted and shaped into small balls. The balls are melted again to form thread. People can then use the thread to make different kinds of clothes.

According to Juma, it takes 67,000 bottles to create 1 ton of thread. This reduces carbon emissions by 4.2 tons and water use by 6.2 tons compared with the normal way of making thread. “4 bottles can make a pillowcase. 5 can make a shirt, 10 a dress and 20 a short coat,” Juma said.

Some people might have doubts about wearing something made out of plastic bottles. But according to Causeartist, a website that focuses on innovation, clothes made from plastic could be even better than nylon and polyester. Plastic thread can be made into different textures, such as cotton, silk or even wool. “The more we learn about recycled fabrics, the more we realize that they work just like other fabrics. You can get a heavier cotton feeling or a silky feeling by weaving the yarns into different textures and using different washing methods. There is actually a lot you can do with this fabric,” Juma said.

The price for the clothes in the new collection ranges from 500 to 3,000 yuan. However, Juma is optimistic that prices will fall when more companies follow the sustainability path taken by her business.

【1】Why is fashion brand JUMA now making clothes from plastic bottles?

A.Because too many bottles are being thrown away.

B.Because the company has advanced technology.

C.Because people are fond of wearing such clothes.

D.Because recycling the bottles is good for the Earth.

【2】What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?

A.Creating 1 ton of thread in the normal way brings about 4.2 tons of carbon emissions.

B.Making clothes from plastic bottles reduces carbon footprint and is worth the effort.

C.A fashion company can make as many as 300 short coats using only 1 ton of thread.

D.The new way of making thread from plastic bottles is not harmful to the environment.

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards clothes made from plastic bottles?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Critical.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Disapproving.

【4】What is the main purpose of this passage?

    A.To advertise fashion brand JUMA.

B.To introduce a new type of clothes.

    C.To praise fashion companies’ creativity.

D.To express concern about the Earth.

Mysticism touches almost every aspect of life in Indonesia and business is no ______. One of the meditators said his weekly meditation sessions are aimed mainly at bringing the peace of mind that makes for good decision-making. But the insight gained from mystic communication with spirits of wise kings has also helped ______ the profits of his five companies.

Or maybe the spirits will tell us he should be hired.’ Hadiziko hastened to add that his companies also hold modern personnel management systems and that formal ______ are essential for a candidate even to be considered. Perspective investments also are considered through mystic meditation. ‘With the mind relaxed and open, it is easier to be ______ in judging the risk of a new venture. Meditation and contact with the wisdom of the old leaders sharpens your own insight and intuition. Then you have to apply that intuition to the information you have and work hard to be successful.’ Mystic meditation helped ______ a business slide his companies experienced in the mid-1980. Operating with normal business ______, he lost more than $ 3 millions in that year alone. Meditation brought back his peace of mind. Putting the right persons in the right jobs and gaining confidence in his business decisions were the keys to a turning around that has brought ______ and profitability. The mysticism in Handspike’s boardroom is part of a growing movement in Indonesia called Kebatinan – the ‘search for the inner self.’

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

    Every Dog Has Its Day

Roscoe was a big, ugly bulldog. He wasn’t very smart, but he had a good heart. Roscoe’s owner left him chained up outside each day when he went to work. Roscoe liked being outside. He was always nice to everyone. He didn’t even bother the rat that lived in a nearby hole.

A group of boys often passed Roscoe on their way to and from school. One day, one of the boys had a candy bar in his hand as he walked by. Roscoe jumped up when he smelled that candy bar. He tried to run over to the boy, but his chain stopped him short. The boys all laughed when they saw Roscoe pulling on his chain. The boy with the candy bar held it in front of Roscoe’s nose. He kept it just out of reach to tease him. All the boys laughed as Roscoe tried to reach the candy bar but couldn’t.

From then on, those boys never passed Roscoe without doing something mean to him. Poor Roscoe was having a hard time and felt scared. The rat that lived in the alley had been watching. She understood that people were sometimes mean to animals for no good reason. She didn’t think it was nice. She decided to help Roscoe.

When Roscoe went to sleep for his afternoon nap, she quietly sneaked over to him. She began chewing on Roscoe’s leather collar around his neck which the chain was connected to. She had chewed through more than half of it when she heard out voices down the alley.

The rat raced back into her hole and saw that the boys were coming. Roscoe was awake now. When the boys saw him, they laughed and started throwing sticks at him. Roscoe was hit and he barked angrily at the boys with all his strength. This time when he got to the end of his chain, his collar broke off. He was free.
