22、In It’s a Wonderful Life with James Steward, the scene that gets me is at the end when one guy says: ‘To my big brother, George, the richest man in town.’ It kills me, man. In the film, it’s Christmas and James Stewart is in big trouble financially and he’s going to be arrested and so he decides to kill himself . But then this angel comes down (only he looks like an ordinary guy) and shows him what life would have been like in his home town if he’d never lived. And he sees how his life has touched all these other lives and really made a difference. I watch most of the film with a lump (肿块) in my throat. Brilliant!

One of the funniest moments, I think, is in the first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, when Harrison Ford is trying to escape from his enemies. It takes place in an eastern market and Indiana is suddenly faced by an enormous man carrying a huge sword. The man gives an amazing display of swordplay with this sword and you can see this feeling of panic passing over Indiana’s face. Then he suddenly pulls out a gun and just shoots the guy. The first time I saw it, the audience broke out in a cheer. Amazing! Apparently, I read later, they were going to do a full fight, but Ford didn’t want to spend hours in the sun and it would have been very expensive, so he asked Spielberg (the director) if he could just shoot the guy and Spielberg agreed.
Mel
The opening of Jaws. It’s all in the music, which is played on the cello (大提琴). I expect everyone knows it. You start by seeing the sea from the point of view of a shark on the bottom of the sea bed. Then the scene moves to a beach and it’s a sunny day and all these families are sunbathing and haying a good time. Then there’s a girl who goes into the water and suddenly we’re under the water again, looking at the girl’s legs from the shark’s point of view. Then suddenly she screams and she’s dragged across the surface of water before she disappears. I was on the edge of my seat. It’s much more effective than showing the shark straightaway. And for the rest of the film, every time that music comes back you know something awful is going to happen.

Jurassic Park. The bit when the two kids are in the jeep and it’s broken down and there’s some water in the back and you hear this noise, and all you see is the movement in the water and the fear in their eyes when they understand what it means. I saw it when I was about 11 and I was frozen. That was more frightening than actually seeing the Tyrannosaurus rex (霸王龙).

23、Harvey Sutton spent nearly seven months hiking with his parents, walking the thousands of miles that make up the complete Appalachian Trail(AT). Harvey, or “Little Man”, was just 4 years old when he started, and celebrated his 5th birthday on the trail.
Harvey’s parents, Josh and Cassic Sution, have been hiking with Harvey since he was two. They prepared him for hiking the AT by starting out with lots of shorter walks and hikes.
It took Harvey and his family 209 days to complete the entire AT. Every day the family would wake up around 5:30 in the morning. They would have breakfast and pack up their tent and sleeping bags before setting off through the woods. In general, the family hiked about 16 kilometers a day before stopping to camp again.
During his days on the AT, Harvey liked to use his imagination. This helped him walk more quickly and have fun while he hiked. He played games with his mom and dad and other hikers. Harvey says he enjoyed playing the “cell phone game” where you pretend you are different people.
Harvey and his family made friends with other hikers on the trail. Along the way, Harvey earned the nickname of “Little Man”.
Karl Donus Sakas hiked with the Suttons through seven states. He helped make the hike fun for Harvey by creating a treasure hunt for him to complete.
But Harvey also enjoyed the sometimes hard work of hiking. “My favorite part was the rock scrambles,” he says, “because they were so fun and hard.”
Mr. Sakas says Harvey didn’t seem to get tired. When other hikers were worn out at the end of the day, Harvey was still eager for a game of freeze tag.
Completing the AT taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to take on challenges together. Harvey’s mom says that because of the experience, “We’re closer than ever before.”

24、Michael Baker at the University of Toronto and Kevin Milligan at the University of British Columbia recently analyzed survey data of parents in three countries — the United States, Canada and Britain. They were especially interested to see how parents say they spend time with their children, and they turned up an interesting gender difference in what they called “teaching activities” such as teaching them the alphabet or numbers, reading with the children.
The finding surprised them because at least in a popular view, parents supposedly spend more time with boys than girls. And Baker says that perception does tend to hold true for older children’s fathers tend to spend more time with boys once they are older than age 4 or 5. When children are smaller, Baker says, parents spend about the same total time with boys as they do with girls.
The economists focused their analysis on first-born children in order to see the difference clearly, for it would muddy the waters to compare parents caring for an only child with parents caring for their second or third child, Baker says. But they did find that the difference also shows up clearly among twins (a boy and a girl). Here again, the parents surveyed seemed to devote more time to girls when it came to cognitive (认知的) activities.
The big question, of course, is why these differences come about. Milligan says parents may be following cultural concepts and unconscious biases (偏见) that suggest they should read with their daughters and have active play with sons.
It is also possible, Baker says, that the costs of investing in cognitive activities is different when it comes to boys and girls. As an economist, he isn’t referring to cost in the sense of cash; he means cost in the sense of effort. “It is just more costly to provide a unit of reading to a boy than to a girl because the boy doesn’t sit still, you know, doesn’t pay attention,” he says, “these sorts of thing.”

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Yesterday I was leaving a restaurant when I saw a homeless man having a hot dog, just sitting on the ground. He had a soda with him, too. He was eating that hot dog as if he hadn’t eaten for months and the scene just broke my heart.
I was afraid that I didn’t have extra money at that time to buy him more food. I said to myself the next time I had money and I saw the man, I would buy him food.
Recently, I had done part-time jobs all day so I had some extra money. But I thought of going to Walmart to buy the water drinking fountain (饮水机) for my cat, which cost a lot. I ended up with just $5 left on my card and I had $2 cash. Suddenly, I found I forgot to buy a gallon of water for the new cat water drinking fountain. I didn’t return to Walmart. Somehow, I went to the same restaurant to buy the gallon of water instead.
I came out of the restaurant and there was that man again and he was going to sit down on the ground again. All he had was a drink. I kept saying to him, “Hi, sir, let’s go inside and I’ll pay for you.”
The other day, on my app for shopping, it had a buy-one-get-one free slice of pizza and I told him. His face beamed with happiness, “Oh, I would like to have that!” The coupon (优惠券) was out of date, but I still had enough money so I bought him two slices of pizza. When I asked him if he would like a cup of ice cream, he said sure.
