二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Companies which sell liquids like drinks or shampoo depend on bottles made of plastic or glass for their packaging. But as customers have become more worried about the environment, many companies have begun working to develop paper bottles.

Paper bottles have many advantages. They are easy to recycle and weigh less than glass or plastic bottles, meaning they’ll require less energy to produce and to move around.

A company called Paboco has been working with many large companies to develop paper bottles. Clearly, one of the biggest challenges is keeping a paper bottle from leaking (渗漏). Therefore, many companies are lining their bottles with a thin sheet of plastic. Though this liner can be taken away and recycled, many recycling programs don’t have the right machines to deal with these liners.

A Danish beer company called Carlsberg is working with Paboco on a paper bottle called the “Green Fiber Bottle”. In the future the company hopes to use a “bio-plastic” that will break down naturally over time. A company named Diageo has just announced the first paper bottle that’s completely plastic-free. Instead of a plastic liner, a non-plastic coating will be used on the inside of the bottles. This should make the bottle fully recyclable. Diageo says they’ll use the bottle with their whiskey in 2023.

However, there’s still lots of testing to be done before paper bottles can replace glass or plastic bottles. Companies will need to see how long liquids can be stored in the bottles, and make sure the bottles don’t influence the taste. But with so many companies working toward the same goal, it’s likely that we can expect to see paper bottles on store shelves in the near future.

【1】What forces many companies to develop paper bottles?

A.The cost of making plastic or glass bottles.

B.The customers’ caring about the environment.

C.The energy needed to produce ordinary bottles.

D.The difficulty in shaping the plastic or glass bottles.

【2】Why are plastic liners used inside the bottles?

A.To make them easy to recycle.

    B.To make bottles reusable.

    C.To prevent liquid from escaping.

    D.To lower the production cost.

【3】What can we infer about the making of paper bottles?

A.Non-plastic coatings may be hard to recycle.

B.Paper bottles can’t go without a plastic liner.

C.There’s still a long way to go to reach the goal.

D.Not all paper bottles are better than glass bottles.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Traditional Bottles or Paper Bottles

B.Companies Work to Develop Paper Bottles

C.Paper Bottles Are Getting Increasingly Popular

D.Advantages and Disadvantages of Paper Bottles

  • 22、How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we have really known is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions, and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. These sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, are called words.

The power of words, then, lies in their associations—the things they bring up in our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar(粗俗的).

【1】According to the author of the passage, ________.

A.men, as well as animals, invented certain sounds to express thoughts

B.words did not have written form at first

C.the origin language is a difficult question

    D.words came from sounds

A.it can associate the things in the world with the ideas in our minds

B.one word is connected with another

C.it can associate one person with another

D.it can recall to us the events of our past

【3】In order not to make our speech silly and vulgar, we should ________.

A.choose words with care and accuracy

B.use words that can move men to tears

C.use words which sing like music

    D.become a master of words

【4】The best title for this passage would be ________.

    A.The meaning of words

    B.The nature of words

    C.The invention of words

  • 24、Nashville-based helicopter pilot Joel Boyers had just finished his job on Saturday morning and was heading home when he received a call for help from a woman in Pennsylvania. Her brother Johnson’s home in Waverly, Tennessee, was underwater and he was trapped on a roof with his daughters. Could Boyers help?“I thought how I would feel if I told her I was not even going to try?” he said in a Thursday interview. “She just so happened to call the right person,   because I’m the only person crazy enough to even try to do that.”

The weather was terrible and Boyers had to deal with hills and power lines on the way to Waverly, a small city about 60 miles west of Nashville. Just before reaching the town, he found the Internet was down, making it impossible to locate the house he was looking for. He flew on anyway.

“When I arrived, it was nothing but raging water below me,” he said. A few people were out in boats, rescuing the trapped. Boyers was alone in the sky. He started flying up and down the flooded area, grabbing anyone he could.

Boyers said he ended up rescuing 17 people that day. He was proud of that, but said he was the one who should be thanking them. “I literally prayed just days before this that I would be given some meaning in my life, and then I end up getting this call,” he said. He had flown over disasters before including floods, but “The police are usually there, and my hands are tied. This time there isn’t any,” he said.

To perform the rescues, Boyers had to carefully avoid power lines, balance his skids (打滑) on sloped rooftops, and fly over flood waters. It took all the skills learned over 16 years of flying, including for a television news station, for documentaries and for country music stars. “I don’t want to lie,” he said. “It was almost a little fun for me.”

【1】Why did Boyers fly to Waverly?

A.Because he had to do his routine tasks.

B.Because his brother was caught in the flood.

C.Because he was going to have an interview.

D.Because he received an emergency call.

【2】What was the biggest obstacle to finding Johnson’s house?

    A.A long distance.

    B.The Internet failure.

    C.High mountains.

    D.Fallen power lines.

【3】Which of the following best describes Boyers?

    A.Caring and courageous.

    B.Ambitious and demanding.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Life in the Clear

Transparent animals let light pass through their bodies the same way light passes through a window. These animals typically live between the surface of the ocean and a depth of about 3,300 feet-as far as most light can reach. Most of them are extremely delicate and can be damaged by a simple touch. Sonke Johnsen, a scientist in biology, says, “These animals live through their life alone. They never touch anything unless they’re eating it, or unless something is eating them.”

And they are as clear as glass. How does an animal become see-through? Ifs trickier than you might think.

The objects around you are visible because they interact with light. Light typically travels in a straight line. But some materials slow and scalier(散射) light bouncing it away from its original path. Others absorb light, stopping it dead in its tracks. Both scattering and absorption make a.n object look different from other objects around it, so you can see it easily.

But a transparent object doesn't absorb or scatter light, at least not very much. Light can pass through it without bending or stopping. That means a transparent object doesn't look very different from the surrounding air or water. You don't see it- you see the things behind it.

To become transparent, an animal needs to keep its body from absorbing or scattering light. Living materials can stop light because they contain pigments(色素) that absorb specific colors of light. But a transparent animal doesn’t have pigments, so its tissues won’t absorb light. According to Johnsen, avoiding absorption is actually easy. The real challenge is preventing light from scattering.

Animals are built of many different materials—skin, fat, and more—and light moves through each at a different speed. Every time light moves into a material with a new speed, it bends and scatters. Transparent animals use different tricks to fight scattering. Some animals are simply very small or extremely flat. Without much tissue to scatter light, it is easier to be see-through. Others build a large, clear mass of non-living jelly-like(果冻状的) material and spread themselves over it.
