  • 22、Below is a passage adapted from the network edition of China Daily.

    Event

    Li Yang, one of China’s most famous English teachers, apologized for beating his American wife more than a week after she posted photos of her injuries on the web and set off a bomb of criticism.

    “I wholeheartedly apologize to my wife Kim and my girls for committing domestic violence. This has caused them serious physical and mental damage,” Li said on his microblog at Weibo.com, the country’s most popular social media site, on Saturday. Li, 42, is a mechanics major but is best known for his “Crazy English,” a popular method of language learning that involves yelling at the top of one’s lungs.

    He was at the center of public criticism after his wife Kim Lee put up posts on the web accusing him of abuse, showing her swollen forehead and knees.

    Voices

    @Xuemanzi, angel investor

    Anti-domestic violence laws should be made as soon as possible, giving protection to the rights of women and children lawfully. Police should not stand back from domestic violence any longer, even if no one reports them. Society, as a whole, should attach greater importance to the crime.

    @Zhangxiaomei

    Chinese are never taught about marital(婚姻的) relations, which mean not merely living together. A good marriage needs to overcome three differences: family background, gender and personalities. In addition to these, there is cultural gap in Li Yang’s case. If the effects of these differences are not well understood, after the honeymoon period, they will turn into conflicts and endanger the marriage. Li’s domestic violence is a reminder that China needs such education.

    @Wuxiaolong, Sina Weibo user

    Li Yang’s choice to resort to domestic violence really reflects his character. Students who have attended his Crazy English Camp may know what I mean: Li wants his students to worship him as an idol. I still remember he once had his students kowtow(叩头) to him. He always teaches English by imposition(权威强制), which directly reflects his desire for power.

    @Sikaozhe, Sina Weibo user

    In the US, the punishments for domestic violence are even more severe than stealing. If the police arrive at the wife’s call during a fighting between a couple and find injuries on her, they will immediately arrest the husband. Even if the wife doesn’t call the police, they may also show up as neighbors could well do their part.

    @ykxin Sina Weibo User

    Don’t blindly worship anyone, because in every closet there may hide a skeleton. As a famous Chinese saying goes, “Only they who do well in their daily routine tasks can fulfills their dreams on great occasions”. Not surprisingly, one who focuses too much on his career and ignores his family, like Li Yang, will fail in both. Don’t judge a person by his career success, wealth, or any other material aspect, because what finally decides a person is his character.

    Aftermath(余波)

    Although Li Yang publicly apologized to his wife, promising to love his daughters even if he and Lee divorce, the damage, perhaps permanently, has been done to his wife, his three daughters and the whole family.

    Wang Xingjuan, founder of the Maple Women’s Psychological Consulting Center, a non-profit organization, said nearly half of domestic violence abusers are people who have higher education, senior jobs and social status. She said this was probably because such people were usually under more mental stress.

    1This passage is focused on Li Yang’s   .

    A. microblog article   B. domestic violence

    C. English-teaching career   D. international marriage

    2Zhangxiaomei holds the view that   .

    A. laws should be passed to protect women and children

    B. crazy personality accounts for violence and ill temper

    C. overcoming background gap is necessary for marriage

    D. Li is wrong to have his students worship him as an idol

    3Who thinks that character plays the most important role in one’s life?

    A. @Xuemanzi   B. @Sikaozhe

    C. @ykxin   D. @Zhangxiaomei

    4According to Wang Xingjuan, .

    A. people of higher education won’t easily lose temper

    B. people under stress tend to have domestic violence

    C. people in lower social status often beat their wives

    D. people with senior jobs seldom have family trouble

  • 23、   The Grand Canyon (美国大峡谷) is an unfolding mystery. No photograph, however stunning, can do justice to the Grand Canyon. No account, however expressive, can describe it in sufficient detail. To appreciate its marvel, you must see it for yourself. To get you started on your journey, here are several things you’ll want to know before you go.

    Crowds

    About 6 million people visit the Grand Canyon each year. Fortunately, the park is spread over about 2,000 square miles, so there’s plenty of chance for peace and privacy. There are several ways to avoid the crowds. First, visit the park in spring, fall or winter. Second, avoid the busy South Rim in favor of the more peaceful North Rim. Remember, about 12 people die each year in the Grand Canyon. Causes of death include drowning, falling, overheating and “killfies” — selfie-related deaths.

    Internet and cellphone

    There is spotty internet and cellphone coverage in the North Rim and South Rim visitor centers and in some of the larger hotels, including El Tovar and Grand Canyon Lodge. But if you venture inside the canyon and wander in places such as Tuweep Campground, assume you’ll be isolated. Always inform a friend or family member about where you’re going and for how long.

    Railway

    Since the late 1800s, the Grand Canyon railway has carried passengers from Williams, Arizona to the South Rim’s train station. It’s a pleasant ride through Ponderosa pine forests and wide-open grasslands. You won’t see the canyon from the train.

    Skywalk

    In 2007 the Hualapai tribe (部落) approved the construction of Skywalk, a bridge with a glass walkway sticking out 70 feet into the canyon, at Eagle Point in Grand Canyon West. Tickets start at $69 per person, which includes shuttle bus service and access to Guano Point, Eagle Point and Hualapai Ranch viewpoints.

    1According to the passage, when is the busiest season for the Grand Canyon?

    A.Spring. B.Summer.

    C.Autumn. D.Winter.

    2Cellphone signals can be picked up in the following places EXCEPT ________

    A.Visitor centers. B.El Tover.

    C.Grand Canyon Lodge. D.Tuweep Campground.

    3How can you enjoy the view of the Grand Canyon to the fullest?

    A.By visiting South Rim when it is hot and sunny.

    B.By posting selfies on social media websites while visiting.

    C.By taking the pleasant train ride across the canyon.

    D.By walking on a glass walkway at Eagle Point.

  • 24、As part of my research, I collected every digitized number one New York Times bestseller from 1960 to 2014 and ran the Flesch-Kincaid test* on 563 of them. Most books meant for a general audience will fall within the fourth- to eleventh-grade range, as did all of these bestsellers. If you look at the scores over the decades, an unmistakable trend becomes clear: The bestseller list is full of much simpler fiction today than it was 40 or 50 years ago. In the 1960s, the median (中间的,中位数的) book had a grade level of 8. Today the median grade level is 6.

    On the upper end, James Michener’s 1988 novel Alaska had a grade-level score of 11.1. Of the books I analyzed, 25 had a grade level of 9 or higher. But just two of these were written after 2000.

    On the low end, eight books tied for the lowest score of 4.4. All were written after 2000 by one of three high-volume writers: James Patterson, Janet Evanovich, and Nora Roberts.

    There’s no way around it: While prize-winning literary novels such as Jonathan Franzen’s.

    The Corrections make the number one spot on occasion, overall, the books we’re reading have become simpler. Does that mean that books-and therefore their readers-are getting “dumber” too?

    It is true that today’s bestsellers have much shorter sentences than the bestsellers of the past, a drop from a median of 17 words per sentence in the 1960s to 12 in the 2000s. Also, today’s list is much more often topped by commercial novels than in the past.

    It would be easy to associate the New York Times list of reading-level decline with the rise of arguments that the country’s intellect is at an all-time low, but I don’t think this is fair.

    Writing doesn’t need to be complicated to be considered powerful or literary. The winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, The Goldfinch, was also a bestseller and has a reading level of 7.2. While many classics have high scores (The Age of Innocence at 10.4, Oliver Twist at 10.1, The Satanic Verses at 10.1), just as many have surprisingly low scores: To Kill a Mockingbird at 5.9, The Sun Also Rises at 4.2, and The Grapes of Wrath at 4.1. These books are highly respected, but they are also accessible enough to be taught in middle and high school.

    It’s logical that our bestselling books are not complex-by definition, popular means they appeal to the masses. For what it’s worth, plenty of successful “literary” writers have welcomed the beauty of “easy” writing.

    As one bestselling writer put it,” One day I will find the right words, and they will be simple.” His name: Jack Kerouac. By the way, Kerouac’s most popular book, On the Road, scores a reading level of 6.6.

    *The following is the formula of the Flesch-Kincaid test and the resulting score is the grade level required to understand the text.

    【1】What does the writer’s research find?

    A.The Flesch-Kincaid test fails to reflect the truth.

    B.More novels were written before 2000 than after 2000.

    C.The language of best-sellers has been getting simpler.

    D.High-volume writers were mostly born between 1960 and 2000.

    【2】By “there’s no way around it”, the writer means that what follows is _______.

    A.something that we cannot deny

    B.something that we think unusual

    C.something that is worthy of a prize

    D.something that will cause damage

    【3】Why does the writer mention the books To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sun Also Rises and The Grapes of Wrath?

    A.To illustrate how respected books are usually like.

    B.To stress the importance of being complicated to classics.

    C.To remind readers that there are too many classics to name.

    D.To show that books can be both respected and easy to read.

    【4】What does the writer think of the trend of best-sellers that is introduced in the passage?

    A.It makes readers dumber.

    B.It doesn’t do much harm.

    C.It fails to be accepted by writers.

    D.It should be paid attention to.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

    Jack tossed(抛,扔)the papers on my desk—his eyebrows knit(皱眉)into a straight line as he glared at me.

    “What’s wrong?” I asked.

    He pointed at the proposal. “Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,” He said, turning on his heels and leaving me in anger.

    How dare he treat me like that, I thought. I had changed one long sentence, and corrected grammar, something I thought I was paid to do.

    It’s not that I hadn’t been warned. Other women who had worked my job before me called Jack names I couldn’t repeat. One coworker took me aside the first day. “He’s personally responsible for two different secretaries leaving the firm,” she whispered.

    As the weeks went by, I grew to hate Jack. His actions made me question much that I believed in, such as turning the other cheek and loving your enemies. I prayed about the situation, but to be honest, I wanted to put Jack in his place, not like him.

    One day another of his episodes left me in tears. I stormed into his office, prepared to lose my job if needed, but not before I let the man know how I felt. I opened the door and Jack glanced up. “What?” he asked abruptly.

    Suddenly I knew what I had to do. After all, he deserved it.

    I sat across from him and said calmly, “Jack, the way you’ve been treating me is wrong. I’ve never had anyone speak to me that way. As a professional, it’s wrong, and I can’t allow it to continue.”

    Jack snickered(暗笑)nervously and leaned back in his chair. I closed my eyes briefly. God help me, I prayed.

    “I want to make you a promise. I will be a friend,” I said. “I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness. You deserve that. Everybody does. That’s what friends do.” I slipped out of the chair and closed the door behind me.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
