  • 22、Wonder was published in February of 2012 and was R.J. Palacio’s first novel. One day Palacio took her son to buy ice cream and saw him cry when a girl with facial birth deformities (畸形) sat next to him. Later, while listening to Natalie Merchant’s song “Wonder”, Palacio reflected on the situation and began writing the novel, hoping that a tense scene from her own life could turn into a valuable lesson.

The story centers around Auggie, a ten-year-old boy. Auggie doesn’t look like the rest of us. He was born with a facial deformity that has caused the first person who ever sees him to faint (晕倒). When Auggie’s parents sent him to a regular school, he must face the challenges of fitting in with his classmates and dealing with bullying (霸凌) and exclusion. Along the way. Auggie makes new friends, learns to cope with his condition, and teaches others about the power of acceptance and kindness.

The book is divided into several parts, each told by a different character, allowing the reader to see the events through the eyes of various characters. The themes of acceptance, kindness, and family relationships are central to the book’s messages. However, some readers may find the plot predictable, and others might want a more diverse and inclusive cast of characters.

Despite this, Wonder is a beautifully written and deeply affecting book that offers a powerful message of sympathy and acceptance. By exploring the experiences of Auggie and those around him, the book encourages readers to see beyond appearances and embrace our differences. Its themes and messages are both timely and timeless, and its impact on readers of all ages is undeniable.

【1】Where did R.J. Palacio’s inspiration for Wonder come from?

A.Her son’s love for ice cream.

B.A song for kids with deformities.

C.A story she read in a newspaper.

B.He used to be a school bully.

【4】What does the author think of Wonder?

    A.Objective and plain.

    B.Touching and instructive.

    C.Serious and hard to follow.

    D.Humorous and straightforward.

  • 23、One of my favorite actions is doing good deeds. When other people receive my help, it makes me happy. However, some people look at you strangely when you want to do that. Once I asked a gas station operator if I could pay for the car behind me, but I got a blank stare. After a short explanation, he hesitantly agreed, but then said it was so unbelievable when I pleasantly made this double payment.

So, it’s nice when people “get it”. It seems that people do me a favor too if they receive my favor. At a barbershop recently, after getting my hair cut, I went to the counter to pay. My barber said, “That’ll be twenty dollars please.”

I found that in my wallet I had exactly forty-two dollars. “OK, tell me if you think this is crazy—I’d like to pay for someone else’s haircut as well.”

She hardly hesitated, “Yeah, you can do that.”

Wow it seemed that she was used to this. How cool! She opened her appointment book and asked, “Who do you want to pay for?”

    “You pick.”

A pause. “Oh, you mean someone you don’t know?”

“Yeah, is that crazy? What do you think?”

“No, that’s great! I mean sure, why not?”

She agreed to pick an upcoming appointment of hers. I told her I was sorry I only had two dollars left for her trip, but that I would come back later with more. “No, no, this is enough,” she said with a smile, as she quickly wrote down a note. It was as if this idea was so pleasantly natural that she was being introduced to something familiar.

I don’t know who got my help at last, which isn’t important. The process is often just as satisfying, if not more that the result.

【1】Why did the operator at the gas station blankly stare at the author?

A.He thought the author was an idiot.

B.He wondered if the author had enough money.

C.He couldn’t believe what the author said.

D.He didn’t hear what the author said.

【2】What can be inferred from what the barber said?

A.She showed no interest in the author.

B.She misunderstood the author at first.

C.She always helps others like the author.

D.She always helps the author like others.

【3】How much money did the author have when he left the barbershop?

    A.Forty-two dollars.

    B.Twenty-two dollars.

    C.Two dollars.

    D.None.

【4】The author probably thinks helping process is ________.

    A.rather satisfying

    B.difficult to accept

    C.less exciting

    D.very boring

【5】Which of the following best describes the author?

    A.Serious and stone-hearted.

    B.Popular and crazy.

    C.Happy and selfish.

    D.Kind and generous.

  • 24、   My first day of high school was like any other first day: registering, finding new classmates, meeting new teachers, and seeking new friends.

During lunch, I ran into my first snag (小困难) of the day. At the dining hall, as the checkout (付款处) lady asked for my money, I realized that I had forgotten my lunch money. When I told her about it, I heard a voice behind me. I turned around and there stood a teacher telling he would pay for my lunch. He told me his name, Mr. Peter Walker, and said, “If you get a chance, you should take my history class.” I recognized his name, and told him I was in his class later that day. Mr. Walker made friends with me on the very first day of school at a very crucial time of the day —lunch!

He always told us we should do more than we ever thought. He pushed us to do all things better. He coached many sports, and sponsored many after-class activities. If we were interested in something, he would find a way to expose us to it by inviting speakers, taking us on field trips, or obtaining information for us.

Two years later, my junior year in school was clicking along nicely when one day I was riding my motorcycle and I was hit by a car. I spent six days in hospital and was at home in bed for two weeks before returning to school. Mr. Walker stopped by the hospital each day with my work from my teachers. Once I was at home, he would bring my work too.

After high school, I attended the United States Army Airborne School in Fort Benning, Georgia. I knew my parents would be there the day I graduated, but they brought an unexpected guest. They came across Mr. Walker at lunch several days before and told him I was about to graduate. His visit, however, was not a surprise to me.

    1At the dining hall, ______.

A.the lady didn’t want to charge the author for his lunch

B.the author knew Mr. Walker was right behind him

C.Mr. Walker didn’t know the author was his student

D.the author decided to invite Mr. Walker to lunch

2The story in Paragraph 4 showed that Mr. Walker was______.

    A.caring B.strict C.skilled D.learned

3What happened on the author’s graduation day?

A.His parents met Mr. Walker by chance.

B.His family invited Mr. Walker to lunch.

C.Mr. Walker brought an unexpected guest.

D.His parents came together with Mr. Walker.

4What can we infer from the last sentence?

A.The author had invited Mr. Walker to his graduation ceremony.

B.The author’s parents had informed him of Mr. Walker’s visit.

C.Mr. Walker had a very close relationship with his students.

D.Mr. Walker went to visit the author frequently.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was my first year of school. I loved school: my old-fashioned kind of teacher, Miss Edna the way the old wooden floors smelled and having my own desk that was just my size. There was, however, one problem with school—Mildred.

Daily when I walked the short distance home after school, Mildred would taunt(奚落)me, hit me and scare me. I was absolutely terrified of her. She had failed first grade and was a year older than me. Mildred didn't have friends, so she seemed to concentrate on making enemies. Because I was one of the smallest children in first grade, she had selected me as her number one enemy.

As I walked home after school, she would continually step on the back of the heels of my shoes and cause the shoes to slide down. Then when I stopped to adjust them, she would slap me hard on the back. As soon as the dismissal bell rang each day, my heart started to pound and I blinked fast so I wouldn’t cry.

Pretty soon my mother figured out something was wrong at school and I finally sobbed out the whole story. "You can't do anything, mama. You can't. Everyone will think I'm a baby."

It was impossible for mother to pick me up after school. She had to work. My father had died a few years earlier. I didn't have any sisters or brothers to watch after me. I couldn't imagine what my mother might do. I was certain there was no answerno answer at all for a problem this big. 1 just begged not to go to school.

The next morning, my mother said, Marion, I'm going to walk up the hill with you today. I believe we'll see Mildred. " Mildred walked from way across town to school. She never bothered me on the way to school, only afterward.

"Oh, mama, please don't do that! It will make her mad. Let me stay home by myself. Please, mama."

"Trust me, Marion. I have a plan."
