二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Nearly 40 years ago, Peter Harrison, a marine ecologist witnessed the first recorded large-scale coral bleaching(珊瑚白化)event. Diving in the Great Barrier Reef(大堡礁), he was shocked by the scene before him. "The reef was made up of healthy corals and badly bleached white corals, like the beginnings of a ghost city," he says. Just months before, the same site was filled with colorful tropical life.

"Many of the hundreds of corals that I'd carefully tagged and monitored finally died," he says. "It was shocking and made me aware of just how weak these corals really are.”

Coral exists together with photosynthetic algae(藻类), which live in its tissues and provide essential nutrition(and coloration). But high temperatures and other stresses can turn algae poisonous. When this occurs, the algae may die or be removed by the coral, a process known as bleaching because the coral's clear tissue and white calcium carbonate skeleton(碳酸钙骨骼)are exposed. If the coral can't reestablish its link with algae, it will starve or become ill.

The widespread destruction Harrison saw in 1982 was repeated on many other Pacific Ocean reefs that year and the next. In 1997 and 1998 the phenomenon went global, killing some 16 percent of the world's corals. With rising temperatures, pollution, disease, increased ocean acidity, invasive species, and other dangers, Harrison's ghost cities are expanding

Scientists suppose that about four decades ago severe bleaching occurred roughly every 25 years, giving corals time to recover. But bleaching events are coming faster now—about every six years—and in some places soon they could begin to happen annually.

"The absolute key is dealing with global warming," says marine biologist Terry Hughes. "No matter how much we clean up the water, the reefs will die." In 2016, a record-hot year in a string of them, 91 percent of the reefs that consist of the Great Barrier Reef bleached.

    【2】Paragraph 3 is mainly about___________.

B.the weakness of corals and algae

C.the elements that make algae die

D.the process of building a link with algae

【3】The phrase "Harrison's ghost cities" in paragraph 4 most probably refers to___________.

    A.global warming

    B.the polluted ocean

    C.the white corals

    D.invasive species

【4】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.With algae living in its tissues, coral's white skeleton is exposed.

B.Solving global warming is the real solution to coral bleaching.

C.The reefs die because the water hasn't been cleaned thoroughly

D.The severest coral bleaching occurred about four decades ago.

  • 22、   The chicken-loving dog spent last month guarding the island’s penguin colony, with great success.

A SOUTH-WEST Victorian chicken farmer known as Swampy and his dog Oddball may have found a way to save some of Australia’s endangered wildlife from enemies. After Warrnambool’s once flourishing penguin population was killed in large numbers by foxes and dogs until only 27 remained, Allan Swampy Marsh hatched an effective plan to save the birds. His four sheepdogs had been protecting his chickens against enemies for a decade. He figured they could do the same for the penguins. “The difficulty was trying to convince all the wildlife wallies to think outside the square,” Mr Marsh said. “It’s not an unselfish view of penguins or chicks but the sense of territory (领地) that makes the dogs work, and it is far stronger in these dogs than any other trained breed.”

Oddball’s work as guardian of Middle Island’s colony last month was a success. At the end of the month, 70 pairs of happy feet were counted returning to the island. About 2,000 penguins occupied the island in the 1990s. “Oddy is really protective of the chicks, so to her the penguins were only chicks in dinner suits,” Mr Marsh said. Highly territorial dogs have been bred in Italy to guard livestock for 2,000 years. They manage to keep off trouble makers such as foxes and dogs. The trial’s success has generated interest from overseas. The use of guard animals such as dogs — and even alpacas, which also stop foxes — is now being considered to save other endangered species such as the eastern barred bandicoot.

1What had happened to most of Middle Island’s penguins?

A.They had been killed by other animals.

B.They had been scared away by people.

C.They had stopped breeding for no obvious reason.

D.They had been taken to another island for protection.

2About how many penguins were on the island when it had the largest number?

    A.27. B.70.

    C.1990. D.2000.

3What reminded Allan Marsh of using dogs to guard penguin?

    A.Dogs’ interest.

    B.Dogs guarding chicks.

    C.Dogs’ believable strength.

    D.Dogs’ training in protecting animals.

4What feature of the dogs is most important in this story?

A.They come from Italy. B.They are very territorial.

C.They are an ancient breed. D.They are large with messy fur.

5The purpose of the last paragraph is to suggest that________.

A.people should think globally but act locally

B.Allan ‘Swampy’ Marsh is a typical Australian

C.it may be possible to use this local idea more widely

D.every environmental problem needs a unique solution

A tour of the two cities is the perfect way to experience everything from 17th century’s Habsburg dynast splendor to sci-fi restaurants.

Vienna is famous for Mozart and imperial palaces. You can appreciate the perfect blending(融合) of architecture and nature in the grand Scholoss Schonbrunn Palace, and reward yourself with a cup of Vienna coffee, which has made its way to the world’s cultural heritage.

Bratislava is best known for its fine dining—the remarkable UFO restaurant. You can enjoy a meat-filled dinner here in an amazing setting.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As I was driving to the airport last week the odometer(里程表) on my truck rotated to 100,000 kilometers. This led me to pause and think about selling the truck and buying a new one, but it also made me think about all the life I’d lived in this truck, and how my bulldog had accompanied me in it, leaving me hesitating about selling it.

When I returned to Canada after nine years overseas, what better way could I fit in with and immerse in rural culture than by buying a pickup?

The day I rolled out of the dealer(经销商) and hit the first gravel road(碎石马路) in my Toyota Tacoma was exciting, until I got very nervous as rocks hit my new purchase. But all that quickly evaporated when I received my first call through the truck’s Bluetooth phone. It was the doctor, to say that my Dad was hospitalized in a remote location. I immediately followed the truck’s GPS and got there quickly and safely. I was with Dad for his last two days. And so the first memories of my truck are images carved in my heart.

As the kilometers of my life rolled on, Lyon, my bulldog who came back to Canada with me from France, claimed the back seat as an area belonging only to her. It didn’t matter how short or long the trip was, she stared at me in the review mirror all the time. Most often, I would arrive at our destination and Lyon would stay in the back seat, bathed in the sun with the door open, knowing I would return. There was an overwhelming sense of comfort between us in that truck.

In the early days of truck ownership, I panicked at how dirty it became and any dent(凹痕) it put on. I soon realized, though, that it was part of the truck’s character. Now I look at every dent and recall the story or adventure that put them there. I began to see it as character-building, much like wrinkles appearing on my face. The truck was simply aging gracefully and began, like humans, to display its experience and wisdom.

    Paragraph 1:

I don’t think a vehicle is just for travelling from place to place.
