二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Scientists have solved the mystery of why the overwhelming majority of mammoth fossils(化石)are male.

Much like wild elephants today, young male Ice Age mammoths probably travelled around alone and more often got themselves into risky situations where they were swept into rivers, or fell through ice or into mud, lakes or sinkholes that preserved their bones for thousands of years, scientists say.

Females, on the other hand, travelled in groups led by an older matriarch who knew the landscape and directed her group away from danger.

"Without the benefit of living in a herd led by an experienced female, male mammoths had a much higher risk of dying in natural traps such as mud holes, rock cracks and lakes, "said co-author Love Dalen of the Swedish Museum of Natural History in a report published on Thursday in the journal Current Biology.

The study used genetic data to determine the sex of 98 woolly mammoth fossils in Siberia Researchers found that 69% of the samples were male, a heavily unbalanced sex ratio, assuming that the sexes were fairly even at birth.

"We were very surprised because there was no reason to expect a sex bias in the fossil record," said first author Patricia Pecnerova, also of the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Therefore, researchers believe that something about the way they lived influenced the way they died. Most bones, tusks, and teeth from mammoths and other Ice Age animals haven't survived," explained Dalen.

"It is highly likely that the remains that are found in Siberia these days have been preserved because they have been buried, and thus protected from weathering."

These giant, tusked plant eaters disappeared about 4,000 years ago. While there is no scientific agreement about the causes of their disappearance from the planet, most believe that climate change, excessive hunting by humans and the spread of other animals into mammoth feeding grounds were influential factors.

1The underlined word "matriarch" in paragraph 3 means _______.

    A. figure head   B. female leader

    C. experienced animal   D. mature mammoth

2Why do the majority of mammoth fossils come from male animals?

    A. Scientists find it easier to study male fossilized bones.

    B. There were more male mammoths in comparison to females

    C. Male mammoths were better able to adapt to the changing circumstances.

    D. Male mammoths more frequently died in places where fossils could form.

3Which of the following is suggested as a reason for mammoths dying out?

    A. The increasing competition for food.

    B. The cooling of the earth's temperature.

    C. The disappearance of male mammoths.

    D. The risky behaviour of younger mammoths.

4What is the text type of the passage?

    A. A newspaper article.   B. An academic essay.

    C. A historical description.   D. A science fiction story.

  • 22、Smartphone apps certainly make our lives easier. However, sometimes they can also cause problems. In a recent announcement, the Ministry of Education said teachers should not use WeChat or QQ messaging apps to give homework or ask parents to grade students’ homework.

Many school teachers in China rely heavily on apps to give homework. The kids have to do their homework looking at a phone screen. For example, Liu Yanming, a sixth-grade student in Shanghai, usually has to use his mother’s mobile phone to do his homework. The homework is handwritten, photographed and then posted by his teacher to a parent-teacher group on WeChat.

Liu Yong, his father, is afraid that the apps could distract kids by encouraging them to watch something unrelated to homework.“He is just 12 years old, and I do not want to buy him a cellphone,” Liu told China Daily. “I also worry that my son’s eyesight will be damaged from staring at the phone for too long.”

However, Bai Yueping, president of Shanghai Tangzhen Middle School, defended using apps for homework. Parents can understand their kids’ learning situation and supervise them to finish the homework, Bai told Xinmin Evening News.

Zhang Siqi, a student from Renmin University of China, has a similar opinion to Bai. “The use of WeChat or QQ to give homework is convenient,” Zhang told Teens. “We’re living in an internet era. It’s unwise to refuse to take advantage of technology.”

Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher at the National Institute of Education Sciences, believed that it is impossible to ban the use of electronic devices in the internet era. However, students should use them when it’s necessary, such as when they do listening exercises.“We don’t want to ban online education models, but they must be used carefully. Modern technologies are good ... but they should not steal the show,” he told China Daily.

C.It helps parents know about their kids’ studies.

D.It’s a good way to keep up with technological development.

【4】Which of the following would Chu Zhaohui probably agree with?

A.It’s better to stop using electronic devices in teaching.

D.Online education models have more advantages than disadvantages.

  • 23、   "For years, we had seen a lot of old villages dying slowly before being torn down. It's such a shame. So I wanted to do something," says Zhang Lei, a professor from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Nanjing University.

Zhang's two design works for Librairie Avant-Garde, the Yunxi Library bookshop in Tonglu county's Daijiashan village and Chenjiapu Bookstore in Songyang county, both in East China's Zhejiang province, were opened respectively in 2015 and 2018. The villages have since seen increasing number of visitors. Hostels have been built and, as a result, property prices in the villages have soared. For instance, the annual rent of a house in Daijiashan village was 2,000 yuan ($306) in 2015, but has now grown to 8,000 yuan.

Similarly, Chenjiapu village used to be dying despite a history stretching back 600 years. The bookstore, however, means that holidays bring so many visitors that there are often traffic jams on the road leading to the village. "I never thought that a small bookstore could change the fate of a village," he says.

When Qian Xiaohua, founder of Librairie Avant-Garde headquartered in Nanjing, started opening bookstores in the countryside six years ago, he met with a lot of doubts and questions. After all, bookstores in cities, with much bigger populations, could barely survive due to online competition. Even more surprisingly, Qian prefers targeting old villages that are losing their young people, with just the elderly and children left behind. Those villages are usually located in picturesque surroundings, many with historical details. Qian, accompanied by architects, will then choose old buildings from the villages to be renovated into well-lit modern bookstores that remain true to their original structures and decorative aspects.

Since April 2014, Qian has opened five bookstores in the countryside. All have attracted large numbers of tourists and even young villagers to return home. Apart from their commercial success and subsequent economic revival of the villages, these bookstores have become new public spaces for locals, benefiting the development of rural areas in the long run.

【1】What can we know about many old villages from Zhang Lei’s words in paragraph 1?

    A.They were booming gradually.

    B.They were being deserted.

    C.They were under construction.

    D.They were overdeveloped.

【2】What does the underlined word “soared” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Risen.

    B.Decreased.

    C.Changed.

    D.Overturned

【3】How might people feel about Qian Xiaohua opening bookstores in the countryside initially?

    A.Favorable.

    B.Interested.

    C.Hopeful.

    D.Skeptical.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Old Villages Survive Amazingly

    B.Rebuild Traditional Settlements

    C.Bookstores Rewrite Old Villages

    D.Knowledge Changes Villages

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

My best friend Lily and I met in high school. Ever since then, we had spent New Year’s Eve together. We’d watch together on TV the New Year celebration in Times Square, a the world-renowned tradition for millions to welcome the new year. Every year,   thousands of people will gather in Times Square New York in person on New Year’s Eve counting down to the new year, with celebrations and performances after midnight. And we’d always say that one day we should go there ourselves.

Then we both went to college. Struggling through exams and schoolwork, we had little time to meet up. We missed each other terribly and decided it was time: to finally go to New York ourselves, to be present at the New Year’s celebration, and to do something fun together.

We worked out our schedule, bought tickets for everything and, most importantly, planned how to survive the long hours of waiting in the biting cold before the celebration — we wanted the best spot possible, and there’s only so much space, so we had no choice but to get to the Time Square early.

When the big day finally arrived, it became snowy and colder than any cold we had ever experienced. Actually it was one of the coldest New Year’s Eves on record. Everyone thought we were going to back out.

But we didn’t. We didn’t make it that far to back out.

We woke up and set off early. And, of course, we did freeze along the way, but we kept cheering each other up. Once we got there, we found our way to the line pretty quickly, considering everyone else was pushing their way in the same direction. We got in line and waited to finally get into our area in the Time Square, which thankfully was pretty spacious and close to the stage.

Halfway through the day, my friend and I couldn’t feel our toes.

“Three, two, one. Happy New Year!” we screamed the words as loud as possible.
