21、According to a survey, which was based on the responses of over 188,000 students, today’s traditional-age college freshmen are “more materialistic and less altruistic (利他主义 的)” than at any time in the 17 years of the poll.
Not surprising in these hard times, the student’s major objective “is to be financially well off. Less important than ever is developing a meaningful philosophy of life.” It follows then that today the most popular course is not literature or history but accounting.
Interest in teaching, social service and the “altruistic” fields is at a low. On the other hand, enrollment in business programs, engineering and computer science is way up.
That’s no surprise either. A friend of mine (a sales representative for a chemical company) was making twice the salary of her college instructors her first year on the job-even before she completed her two-year associate degree.
While it’s true that we all need a career, it is equally true that our civilization has accumulated an incredible amount of knowledge in fields far removed from our own and that we are better for our understanding of these other contributions, be they scientific or artistic. It is equally true that, in studying the diverse wisdom of others, we learn how to think. More important, perhaps, education teaches us to see the connections between things, as well as to see beyond our immediate needs.
Weekly we read of unions who went on strike for higher wages, only to drive their employer out of business. No company; no job. How shortsighted in the long run!
But the most important argument for a broad education is that in studying the accumulated wisdom of the ages, we improve our moral sense. I saw a cartoon recently which shows a group of businessmen looking puzzled as they sit around a conference table; one of them is talking on the intercom (对讲机): “Miss Baxter,” he says, “could you please send in someone who can distinguish right from wrong?”
From the long-term point of view, that’s what education really ought to be about.
【1】That the most popular course is accounting instead of literature or history shows that college students ________ .
A.are in eager pursuit of a philosophical life
B.have less selfish concern over the wellbeing of others

【2】By saying “While it’s true that ... be they scientific or artistic” (Lines 1-3, Para. 5), the author means that ________.

22、Growing up in Philadelphia, Lieberman started cooking with his stay-at-home dad when he was seven. His food-loving family had two kitchens, and he quickly learned what was the best way to bake his cakes. Lieberman improved his kitchen skills greatly during a year abroad before college, learning from a cook in Italy and studying local specialties(地方特色菜)in Germany, Spain and France. At Yale, he was known for throwing dinner parties, single-handed frying and baking while mixing drinks for dozens of friends. Just for fun, he and some friends decided to tape a show named Campus Cuisine about his cooking. Lieberman was a real college student showing his classmates how to do things like making drinks out of dining-hall fruit. That helped the show become very popular among the students. They would stop Lieberman after classes to ask for his advice on cooking. Tapes of the show were passed around, with which his name went beyond the school and finally to the Food Network.
Food Network producer Flay hopes the young cook will find a place on the network television. He says Lieberman’s charisma is key.“Food TV isn’t about food any more,” says Flay. “It’s about your personality and finding a way to keep people’s eyeballs on your show.”
But Lieberman isn’t putting all his eggs in one basket. After taping the first season of the new show, Lieberman was back in his own small kitchen preparing sandwiches. An airline company was looking for someone to come up with a tasteful, inexpensive and easy-to-make menu to serve on its flights, Lieberman got the job.

23、Several years ago, a cousin I had lost touch with since I was a teenager dropped by my house. At the living room entrance, he stopped in dead silence, his eyes fixed on the bookshelves covering the entire back wall. “Have you read them all?” he asked me, almost frightened. “Yes,” I said, “just about.” He shook his head in silence, as if this was a feat (技艺) that had demanded some effort. As for him, he had had to leave school at fourteen, working wherever he could. His family did not have books. I only ever recalled seeing the comic book Tarzan lying around on the table.
I often recall this scene with my cousin with unease. It hides another violent one. I was between fifteen and eighteen years old. I must have blamed my father for “not being interested in anything”, for reading only Paris-Normandie, the local newspaper. Usually so calm and tolerant regarding the rudeness of his only daughter, he replied seriously, “Books are good for you. But as for me, I don’t need them to live.”
These words stretch across time, fixed inside me, like a pain and an unbearable reality. I understood very well what my father meant. Reading Alexander Dumas, Flaubert, Camus would not have served any practical purpose in his work as a cafe owner. On the other hand, in the future he hoped for me, he vaguely knew that books held weight, and that they formed part of a defining package — “cultural baggage” — that included the theatre, the opera and winter sports — a superior social world. I understood all that and it was unacceptable. I refused to think that the world of books would stay forever closed to the human being who was dearest to me.
As I think about reasons for reading, my father’s words come back to me insistently, like a personal and unsolvable contradiction. No, to read is not to live but I have always lived with books.

24、Do you like somewhere a little bit different to the usual types of places you find on the high street? I do,so I’m glad to see new ones popping up(冒出)everywhere in London.
The so called pop-up shop is a temporary arrangement. In the aftermath(余波)of the financial crisis of 2008,many businesses had to shut down.Shops, warehouses and offices were left vacant when they stopped trading.Pop-up enterprisers occupied some of them quickly. For them the appeal of this temporary shopping concept is clear:they can start a business with much 1ower risk. The temporary nature of a pop-up shop gives the opportunity to test a product and develop a customer base, without being tied in to a long-term renting contract. Being small makes it much easier for pop-ups to expand if they are successful·
Pop-up shops first appeared in the UK in the early 2000s,with the economy booming. They were originally a way for small companies to rent retail space(零售场所)in great locations. This was while landlords who owned these spaces looked for permanent renters.
Pop-up shops can take a number of different forms. They might be temporary shops in the high street or a shopping centre. They might be simple market stalls(摊位). They could be based in some kind of transport, like a food truck.Or they could be run by people who visit different establishments, like travelling chefs who take over pub and restaurant kitchens temporarily.
According to a report by the Centre of Economic and Business Research, the pop-up industry was worth£2.1bn and is expected to grow by 8.4%this year.Almost anything that can be on a high street can also be a pop-up.There have been pop-up shops, art galleries, theatres and restaurants among others. In an age of fast-changing habits, the pop-up idea might be here to stay.
