  • 21、You’ll probably be familiar with the North American spelling of the word “airplane”. However, if you’ve ever been on an international flight leaving the United States and going to another English-speaking country like the United Kingdom, you’ve probably noticed that there are a few differences between the American and British spellings of words with the same meaning. 【1】 . The American English spelling is “airplane” while the British English spelling is “aeroplane”. So, why does this happen?

Let’s look at the root of the phenomenon. 【2】 . “British English has a general tendency to favour spellings and words that remind people of French, but American English, when it has deviated(背离)from what British English does, often changes into the direction of seeming less French, ”says Lynne Murphy, author of The Prodigal Tongue: The Love-Hate Relationship Between British & American English.

【3】 . “Aeroplane ”is no exception. “We’re comfortable with ‘aero’ in scientific terms, but as planes became more common things to talk about, the ‘aero’ seemed too fancy, ”explains Murphy. “In Scientific American in 1906, there was already a claim that 【4】. Ten years later, ‘airplane’ was adopted by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics as their term. It was considered in the United Kingdom, but that suggestion didn’t go anywhere.”

There’s a good reason why words that mean the same thing are spelled differently, and why that will continue to happen. “【5】 , and people are generally proud of it, so they continue to spell differently, ”says Murphy.

    A.Every country has different culture

B.Your spelling tells people where you’re from

C.The word “airplane” happens to be an example

D.Airplane is a much better word than aeroplane

E.American English and British English have similar historical origins

F.There’s a lot of history that goes beyond words and dives deep into politics, government, and science

G.A lot of words in the English language are borrowed from other languages, like Latin, Greek, and French

  • 22、   For many years, I knew I wanted to be a music video director. After graduating from high school, I moved to Los Angeles, where I earned a degree in video production. Fortune smiled upon me as I quickly worked at important positions. I was young and ambitious working in the field I'd dreamed of for years.

One day, while assisting as a volunteer at an award show, one of the production managers remarked that I was going to be a powerhouse”. I knew I wanted to be happy and enjoy whatever work I did, but I wasn't sure I wanted to be a "powerhouse”. Not too long after the show, I was laid off from my position at the production company. It sent me back home to Florida to think about my next career move.

In Florida, I landed a job working the night shift at a financial institution. The pay was good, but a few months later my creative spirit sent an S. O. S. to my brain, signaling I wasn't making the best use of my talents. I didn't have the money to make another cross-country move back to Los Angeles, but I also couldn't stay in an unfulfilling(不称心的) job.

I did some creative writing during my spare time. To motivate myself even further, I made the commitment to author a children's book. My goal didn't end there, however. I was also determined to get the book published.

Once I completed my manuscript (手稿),I decided it would be best if it were a picture storybook. It was not easy for me to get the book published and yet I continued sending out my work. It took somewhere between three and four years to finally attract the interest of a publisher. I held a copy of my beautiful children’s book in my hands.

I found a happy place within and a new realization. I may not have become a powerhouse, but I did accomplish a goal. Success found within is how you define it, how you live it and always have something to strive for, not fear.

  • 23、   The shadow play is a typical traditional entertainment that has survived and thrived over the centuries. It is taken as an earliest ancestor of modern cinema.

Legend has it that more than 2,000 years ago, Emperor Wudi of the Western Han Dynasty was very depressed over the death of his favorite concubine (妃子). To help him get over his sadness, a minister made a puppet out of cotton and silk in the likeness of the concubine and projected its shadow on a curtain for the emperor to see. The show brought the emperor some comfort. He somehow believed the shadow was his lover’s spirit. This is thought to be the beginning of the shadow play.

One mouth tells stories of thousands of years; a pair of hands operates millions of soldiers. This is how the shadow puppeteer works. Nicknamed “the business of the five”, a shadow puppet group is made up of five people. One operates the puppets, one plays a Suona and a Yueqin, one plays the Banhu, one is in charge of percussion (打击乐器) instruments, and one sings.

During performances, “actors” are held close to a white curtain with their colored shadows cast on it by a strong light from behind. The operator plays five puppets at the same time, each of which has three threads. Ten fingers handle fifteen threads. Moved by guiding sticks, the puppets play roles with musical accompaniment. The popularity of shadow play in some way lies in the equipment being light and easy to carry, the small number of people needed for a performance, and the flexible requirements for performance places. The plays can be quite dramatic and, when it comes to fairy tales or kungfu stories, the “actors” may be made to ride on clouds or perform unusual feats, to the great enjoyment of the audience, especially children.

The design of the figures follows traditional moral evaluation. The audience can tell a figure’s character by seeing his mask. Like the masks in Beijing Opera, a red mask represents honesty, a black mask, loyalty, and a white one, betrayal.

Nowadays, the shadow play has been industrialized and developed a series of tourist products for the promotion of Chinese culture and tourism.

1What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The origin of the shadow play. B.How to please an Emperor.

C.A love story of Emperor Wudi. D.How to make a cotton puppet.

2According to the author, the audience may take great pleasure ___.

A.because the equipment is light to carry B.when roles are played without music

C.because the number of the operators is small D.when the puppets give lively performances

3A figure comes with a white mask may suggest that this character in the story is a person_____.

A.who is honest B.who is loyal

C.who betrays someone or something D.who is responsible

4What is the best title for the text?

A.The Rapid Development of Beijing Opera

B.Shadow Puppetry: Traditional Arts and Crafts

C.The Business of the Five: A Shadow Puppet Group

D.Traditional Characters and Masks in Beijing Opera

  • 24、   It is 4:45 am in Samasati village in north-western Zambia and the Chimwanga family, champion beekeepers of the village, are already on their way to collect honey from one of their many hives(蜂房). Samasati has been famous for beekeeping but it is only in the last ten years that the business has begun to make a difference to the lives of the producers, since they began to trade through an organization guaranteeing them a fair price for their crop.

Samasati is a beautiful place, where nature provides and pollution is non-existent. Here, 61 miles from the nearest telephone or source of electricity, the 322 inhabitants support themselves from the forest and rivers and the only income available to the villagers is from selling their honey.

It is a half-hour walk from the Chimwangas’ house to the hive. On reaching the site, the Chimwangas tear off low, leaf-covered branches from nearby trees. They place these in a pile on the ground as a bundle(捆)and put some dry plants in the middle. A match then sets the plants alight and thick smoke is produced as the fire spreads from the dry plants to the green leaves.

Mr. Chimwanga climbs quickly up the tree trunk and moves carefully along a branch towards the hanging hive, carrying the smoking bundle with him. When he reaches the hive, he waves smoke into the entrance to calm the bees. The bees circle his head continuously. Unafraid, he pulls up a bucket and fills it with the precious delicious honey, fragrant but not too sweet ‒ the result of hundreds of wild flowers the bees have enjoyed in the forest.

This honey is sold straight to the exporting company, North West Bee Products, through Bon Malichi. He is the vital middleman for the beekeepers. Bob believes the honey is Zambia’s future. “Our honey is produced without adding anything.” he says. The honey is transported to Dares Salaam, in neighbouring country Tanzania, for export. Within a month of a Zambian beekeeper climbing to his hive, his honey can be spread on bread anywhere in the world.

1What are the Chimwanga family going out so early to do?

    A.Look for bees.

    B.Get honey in the forest.

    C.Make honey for trading.

A.get light and see the hives clearly

B.scare away the bees by thick smoke

C.produce smoke to protect him from the bees

D.keep warm by the burning plants
