二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It happens sometimes— the forecast says it’s going to rain, but you carry the umbrella with you all day only to find that it isn’t. It’s natural for weather forecasts to make mistakes, but hopefully the launch of Fengyun 4A, China’s new weather satellite, on Dec. 12 will make things better.

Although it is 36,000 km above Earth, Fengyun 4A could be an important part of our lives.

According to Dong Yaohai, the chief designer of the satellite at the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, the satellite has four instruments, including a lightning mapping imager and a radiation imager.

The lightning mapping imager can take 500 pictures of lightning within one second. These pictures will greatly improve thunderstorm forecasts as well as the research on lightning’s frequency and effects. The radiation imager will be used to find out the amounts of PM 10 and PM2. 5 in the air. Both of these are harmful particles (颗粒) that can damage our health.

The satellite is also very sensitive. It is able to tell if there has been a temperature change of 0.1 C on the ground.

Since 1988, China has launched 14 satellites in the Fengyun series. Each satellite has had a different job, and each generation of satellite has been more accurate and updated data more often than the one before.

According to Qu Yan, deputy head of the academy, since 2000 all typhoons formed and developed in the Western Pacific and South China Sea have been successfully found and followed. “Forecasting of typhoons has become increasingly more accurate, and the Fengyun satellites can be credited for this,” said QU.

And the technology is shared with the world. China’s weather satellites, together with those from the US and Europe, are used by the World Meteorological Organization, which means weather data collected by the satellites is made available to more than 3,000 weather forecast outlets in more than 90 countries and regions worldwide.

【1】What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

  • 22、For Stevens Point locals in the US, the city is flooded with delicious fried fish. Here are four top choices for the community to have a try.

    Hilltop Pub&Grill

Hilltop Pub&Grill first opened in the 1980s and took the Stevens Point community by storm with its delicious food and unique decoration style. Its fried fish are beloved due to the use of “high-quality North Atlantic fish, with a light beer batter (面糊)”.

    The Final Score Bar&Grill

The Final Score Bar&Grill aimed to become a local hot spot in 2001 when Jim Billings, the owner, took charge of the business. Billings feels that their five batter choices set them apart from their neighboring bars. Besides, various wines are available.

    Point After Pub&Grill

Point After Pub&Grill started serving delicious food and cold beers in a welcoming environment in 2009. But its history runs much longer. “Before it was Point After Pub&Grill, it had been Northside Bar for 30 plus years,” explained Molski, the owner. Molski feels that the pub’s four special batter choices and other fish specials are what help make it an area landmark.

    Two Harps Pub

This Irish pub opened its doors to the public in 2017 and has been drawing fans and locals ever since. “I had done my career for a long time and was kind of bored with it,” said Nick Moore, the owner. “And this opportunity fell into my lap, so I went with it. It really made sense to open up an Irish bar.” The growing pub advises guests to try a cold beer with their Friday fried fish.

  • 23、   Science is finally beginning to embrace animals who were, for a long time, considered second-class citizens.

Annie Potts of Canterbury University has noted that hens trained to pick colored buttons sometimes choose to give up an immediate food reward for a slightly later (and better) one.

Pigs respond meaningful to human symbols. When a research team carried wooden blocks marked with X and O symbols around pigs, only the O carriers offered food to the animals. The pigs soon ignored the X carriers in favor of the O's. Then the team switched from real-life objects to T-shirts printed with X or O symbols. Still, the pigs walked only toward the O-shirted people: they had transferred their knowledge to a two-dimensional format, a not inconsiderable feat of reasoning.

I’ve been guilty of prejudiced expectations, myself. At the start of my career, I was firmly convinced that monkeys and apes who are from our own mammalian(哺乳动物的) class out-think and out-feel other animals. Fairly soon, I came to see that whales too are masters of cultural learning, and elephants express profound joy and mourning with their social companions. Long-term studies helped to fuel a viewpoint shift in our society: the public no longer so easily accepts monkeys made to undergo painful procedure kin laboratories, elephants forced to perform in circuses, and dolphins kept in small tanks at theme parks.

Animal activists are already there, of course, committed to not eating these animals. But what about the rest of us? Can paying attention to the thinking and feeling of these animals lead us to make changes in who we eat?

1According to Annie Potts, what ability do hens have?

    A.interaction B.analysis C.creation D.abstraction

2What does the research into pigs show?

A.That pigs learn letters quickly. B.That pigs have a good eyesight.

C.That pigs can build up a good relationship. D.That pigs can apply knowledge to new situations.

3What does Paragraph 4 mainly suggest?

A.The similarities between mammals and humans.

B.The necessity of long-term studies on mammals.

C.A change in people's attitudes towards animals.

D.A discovery of how animals express themselves.

4What might be the best title for the passage?

A.The Inner Lives of Food Animals B.The Lifestyles of Food Animals

C.Science Reports on Food Animals D.A Revolution in Food Animals

  • 24、Huang Hua, 36, has been working at the Yangshan Deep Water Port for 13 years. But for the first twelve years, he worked as a driver, operating machines in sky-high cranes (吊车). Now, his work location has moved to a control center, monitoring the cranes from afar.

“At a traditional port, I would work with a handle all day, repeating the same motion 12 hours a day, four days a week. I used to have lots of neck problems. Now the task is less physically challenging, but much more complex,” says Huang, who is now a crane teleoperator.

Now, Huang’s daily work is to closely monitor a dozen computer screens, collect data on the operation status of each cargo crane, and deal with emergencies and malfunctions (故障).

Manual workers like Huang are no longer needed at the terminal. Bridge cranes, auto-guided vehicles and rail-mounted gantry cranes (轨行龙门吊) are now taking over the job. While the labor cost is down 70 percent, the handling efficiency has increased by 50 percent.

The Vice General Manager of the Shangdong Container Terminal Branch, Luo Yunjie told CGTN that all the automated handling equipment is designed and manufactured in China. Once the fourth phase () enters full operation, it will be able to handle 6.3 million TEUs. This will further strengthen Shanghai Port’s status as the busiest in the world.

Shanghai has the ambition of becoming a global shipping center by 2020. Phase IV of the Yangshan Port marks an important step in reaching that goal. In the near future, the Shanghai Port not only aims to gather more value-added shipping resources and offer more various services, but also to play an even bigger role in the country’s Belt and Road initiative.

1What is the difference between Huang’s present job and that of the past?

    A. He works fewer days a week.

    B. He has fewer neck problems.

    C. His task is less physically challenging, but much more complex.

    D. He can operate cranes in a control center far away.

2Why aren’t manual workers like Huang needed at the terminal any longer?

    A. Because the labor cost is down 70 percent.

    B. Because they have more important work to do.

    C. Because all the jobs are done by bridge cranes, auto-guided vehicles and rail-mounted gantry cranes.

    D. Because they aren’t strong enough to work there.

3Which is the most suitable to use to describe present Yangshan Deep Water Port?

    A. The best.   B. The busiest.

    C. The largest.   D. The most advanced.

    Changing Times Bring New Standards

The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, have long been one of the film industry's most famous awards. However, despite its 92-year history, the awards show has come under fire in recent years for not recognizing enough multicultural performers and directors.

In response to this lack of representation, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the group that oversees the Oscars, has announced new diversity requirements for future films to be submitted to the Best Picture category in 2024.

They require nominees to meet at least two out of four sets of standards, aiming to increase inclusion for underrepresented groups — people of color, women and people with disabilities — both on and off-screen. These standards include a minimum requirement for underrepresented groups at the executive level.

Four years ago, OscarsSoWhite quickly drew attention, highlighting the absence of minority representation among previous nominees. It also pointed out that the voting committee has been largely white and male for decades, noted The New York Times.

Ever since, the Academy has looked to increase its diversity by promising to double female and minority members in 2016. For example, the South-Korean film Parasite , which features an all-Asian cast, won four Oscars at the 2020 Academy Awards.

However, the latest move has its doubters. Some have said that the awards body should be focusing on awarding what they consider to be the best film, rather than limiting what can be nominated, noted Forbes. Richard Grenell, the current US ambassador to Germany, also criticized the move, saying that "It's no longer the Best Picture, it's the Most Politically Correct Picture."

Others, though, have praised the initiative. Culture critic Sonny Bunch wrote that, "The academy is finally — finally! — doing something to ensure that underrepresented groups have a shot."

Arguably, The New York Times said it best. While it noted that the requirements were "easy for most studios to satisfy'the initiative will show voters the extent to which diversity standards were met.
