二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、While many of our friends are on holiday in foreign places this summer, our family will be staying at home to get away from it all, as we have done for the last five years. We generally just wander about at home and catch up with some reading. The kids are old enough to go off on their own and often go to the local park or open-air pool. When we have visitors, we might go on the day trip somewhere. On the whole, though, we don’t bother going much beyond our local area. It’s a pattern we’re going to stick to for the foreseeable future for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, it’s just much more relaxing. You don’t have any of the inconveniences and annoyances which are so often associated with travelling. And that’s not to mention the kids asking ‘Are we there yet?’ every two minutes or ‘Do we HAVE to go to the museum?’ Honestly, there’s nothing like dragging a couple of teenagers round some Roman remains to put you off that kind of thing for life. All these would inevitably wind me up, which in turn would lead to a quarrel where I would complain about how ungrateful they were, and how anyone else would leap at the chance to see the places we were taking them, and then I’d threaten them that next time we’d just stay at home! Well, finally I carried out the threat—and everyone’s far, far happier!

If the truth be told, I can’t say I ever really enjoyed going sightseeing anyway. I think we were going on holiday simply out of habit and going sightseeing out of some weird sense of duty. I felt it was what you ought to do when you go abroad and that it would be education for the kids. Most of the time, though, these places actually just left me cold. Even the really big monuments, which are genuinely impressive, didn’t move me in the way I expected. Take the Pyramids. I’d always wanted to go and see them. I’d imagined myself traveling through the desert on a camel to reach them, the sun beating down on my back. The reality, when I finally went there, was that I only had to walk through the streets of Cairo in a taxi to reach them. While they are hugely impressive achievements of engineering, you have to battle with crowds of tourists to get anywhere near them, fighting off the crowds of locals as they shout for business, persuading you to change money or to take a camel ride. I don’t blame these people—they’re just trying to earn a living—but frankly, I could’ve done without it and, for me at least, it meant the Pyramids didn’t live up to my expectations.

【1】What do the writer and her family plan to do for holiday this summer?

    A.To stay at home.

    B.To visit local parks.

    C.To go on some trips.

    D.To see some friends.

【2】Which of the following annoyed the writer most while traveling with her family?

A.She spent too much time on the way.

B.She was threatened with no more trips.

C.Her kids didn’t enjoy the sightseeing at all.

D.Her kids weren’t grateful for what they had.

【3】The writer mentioned the Pyramids in order to _____.

A.give an example of how locals make a living

B.criticize tourists for not preserving these historical sites

C.illustrate that famous places are not that enjoyable in reality

D.argue against what some countries do with their big monuments

【4】Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

    A.Expecting Holidays

    B.Holidays in Our Mind

    C.Why We Love Holidays

    D.Have a Break from Holidays

  • 22、Shakespeare wrote in his great play Hamlet, “Brevity (简洁) is the soul of wit.” But it seems that not everyone agrees with this. Microblog has canceled its 140-character limit for posts, meaning users can now write as many words as they like. And now Twitter, a US social media site that’s similar to Microblog, also announced that it plans to double its character limit from 140 to 280.

Twitter has its reasons for the changes. It’s a pain to have to edit your thoughts to less than 140 characters when you have so much to say. And a big problem for English writers is that it requires more space than character-based languages such as Chinese to express the same thing. According to The Atlantic, while the average English-language tweet is 34 characters, a Japanese one, for example, is only 15.

But still, Twitter users don’t seem to be happy with the new move.

Our reading habits have changed over time, and we’re used to keeping up to date with what’s happening in the world by reading just a couple of lines of text. For this, 140 characters are more than enough.

“[Microblogs] are almost always faster and more efficient than television, radio, newspapers, or any other source,” wrote Dom Knight, a reporter for The Guardian. “It’s like gathering in the town square ... in an instant.”

Trying to fit your thoughts into a limited space is also a good way to come up with smart comments, which is why microblogs are often where the best humor is found.

For example, during former US President Donald Trump’s election campaign in 2016, a Twitter user wrote: “If Trump can seriously win the presidency of this nation, I don’t want to see a job description with ‘experience required’ ever again.” And another wrote: “England: Nothing can be more embarrassing than Brexit. America: Watch this.” These tweets expressed people’s upset louder and quicker than any long articles ever could.

So perhaps we should pay attention to Shakespeare’s words. After all, he only needed 27 characters to make his famous point.

【1】Why does Twitter plan to change its character limit for each post?

A.Twitter users always have a lot to say.

B.Users are not satisfied with the current character limit.

C.More characters are needed when writing in English than in Chinese.

D.Twitter saw that the benefit after Microblog changed the character limit.

【2】What does “this” refer to in the 4th paragraph?

A.People want to know what is happening around the world.

B.People prefer to look through short posts rather than read long articles.

C.People are used to reading short posts in order to get the latest news.

D.People’s new reading habits make it hard to read long posts.

【3】What is the advantage of Microblog according to Dom Knight?

A.People can get information which they cannot get from traditional media.

B.It can quickly gather various pieces of information for people.

C.It can make people feel as if they are there and experiencing an event themselves.

D.The posts can be easily understood because the characters in each post are limited.

【4】Why does the author write about the two Twitter posts?

A.To show that the US presidential election attracted more attention than Brexit.

B.To explain how British people and Americans show their sense of humor.

C.To prove that Twitter is a platform where you can express your own opinions freely.

D.To offer evidence that limited characters can inspire smart posts.

【5】What is the author’s attitude toward the character limit on social media?

A.It should be lifted because it makes it difficult for people to express thoughts.

B.It should be abandoned because it doesn’t fit people’s current reading habits.

C.It should be kept as Shakespeare argued that using fewer words is better.

D.It is meaningful because short texts fit people’s reading habits and help create the best humor.

Pick the color for your room and you can create whatever you feel like. The color will also help you to enlarge the space or making it more inviting, which will also make differently all about it.

However, the trick is to select the right version of that particular color. There are different hues (色调) for blues, for instance. 【2】 Here we have presented a guide that will let you gain a deep insight about the colors.

    Blue

【3】. For kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms it is an ideal choice. Of course it is also associated with sadness that means it may not strike note for each and everyone.
