21、A wave. A thumbs-up. You may think you know what these common gestures signify…but what happens when you wave to your European friend across the street and she turns to walk the other way?
There’s a reason for her reaction.【1】While most Americans interpret a wave as a friendly greeting or goodbye, the same motion is just as likely to communicate the word “no” in parts of Europe and Latin America.
Obviously, body language is not universal.【2】
The most common understanding of the subject relates body language to spoken language. Generally speaking, the same body language has different meanings in different places, which is closely related to the traditional customs of the region.【3】For example, In Germany the thumbs-up represents the number one, but in Japan it means “five” instead. So to understand a certain body language correctly, it is best to combine it with spoken language.
There’s one more complication in understanding nonverbal (非语言的) communication, though.【4】In a study, participants from the West, African communities, and New Guinea were shown a collection of more than 10,000 portraits illustrating different facial expressions (the same man indicates different facial expressions, anger, sadness, etc.). Researchers concluded that there were at least seven universal facial expressions: anger, disgust, fear, surprise, happiness, sadness, and contempt.【5】
So while a wave or thumbs-up may not translate on your next trip abroad, a genuine expression of emotion probably will.
A.But why?
B.This is also true in different cultures.
C.The mixed messages don’t stop there.
D.It isn’t because your friend is tired of your company.
E.Indeed, signals are essential for effective communication.
F.90 percent of participants identified the same emotions in the photo.
G.Although body language isn’t universal, the emotions behind it may be.

23、My passion started decades ago as a kid on a flight to India. I was attracted by how such a large airplane was able to glide(滑翔)smoothly above the clouds. I made it a goal to become a pilot. I am now a pilot for American airlines. Though being a pilot consumes my life,it is a job worth doing.
My job is slightly different compared to that of a typical pilot. Most pilots have their routes they fly. They then familiarize(使…熟悉)themselves with the routes. However, in my case,I participate in any job where a pilot is immediately required. It is true that some days I might have a workday from nine in the morning to five in the afternoon. In fact, some days,I might even begin my work at three in the morning when I am needed to fly. Sometimes, as for the typical day,I do not have one.
Having been on the job for over two decades,I have learned some important life lessons. As I greet passengers boarding the airplane,I realize I,along with other airline pilots, have enhanced(提高)the lives of those who we are serving. In fact, there is one particular experience that I will never forget. A family was walking in from the gate, explaining that their beloved one was ill and had to be taken to a big hospital in another city immediately. It was at this point that I realized just how important my job was.
Therefore, my life as an airline pilot is definitely not for everyone. However,my job is something I enjoy thoroughly and will continue to do till I am old enough. As a pilot, I have been able to experience so many different types of situations in different places throughout the world. For anyone interested in piloting, I would recommend going for it.

24、Jacob Kohut, 35, was one of the soldiers. He finally had some downtime during his 12-hour shift. He sat in the back of a Humvee, flute in hand, teaching students via his laptop how to play Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. That meant he was on double duty, as an active soldier and as a dedicated school band teacher.
For the past five years, he’s taught music at two Fairfax County, Virginia, schools—Canterbury Woods Elementary School in the morning and Frost Middle School in the afternoon. When he was on duty, Kohut’s days began in the morning with teaching his elementary class remotely from the drill floor of the DC Armory, finishing the lesson mere minutes before his shift started at 10 a.m. Later in the day, during his break, he would go online to teach his middle school students from the back of a Humvee.
Diane Leipzig, the headteacher of Canterbury Woods Elementary School, told Kohut she would find a substitute teacher to cover his classes while he was on duty, but he insisted on continuing to teach. She says, “He’s an excellent example. He teaches our kids the significance of practice and determination.” Music has always been a driving force in Kohut’s life. “My mom was a music teacher. That’s why I do what I do, because she was such a good role model.” says Kohut. Kohut insists he is not doing anything extraordinary. “We are here to do what’s needed, and if that means standing outside for 18 hours straight in the freezing cold, we're ready to do that.” he says. As the 11 instruments played by his virtual students synchronized in song, the familiar melody of Ode to Joy rang through the Humvee. At that moment, Kohut realized there wasn’t a timelier tune to teach his students. “It’s a symbol of unity and peace,” he says, “and that’s what the world needs right now.”

26、Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school , I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas.I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car.I stopped and wondered what I should do.A car pulled up behind me.It was the couple. They said they would take me.We chatted and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.I wrote them a thank-you note.Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them.Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in the morning. In late afternoon I found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership was right next door.I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it.They would accept no payment, so later, I wrote them a note to say thanks.I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever written him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
"Thank you" - two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.
