  • 21、Nodira, 18, lives in the Tashkent region of Uzbekistan. She was born with a rare disease and is now paralyzed(瘫痪) from the waist down. Her life is confined to a wheelchair but__________________Her hopes for the future include attending university, riding in her father’s car and being able to walk like other children.

Nodira, which means ‘unique’ in Uzbek, is one of five children in a poor family. Every morning, after reciting her prayers, Nodira feeds the hens and goats from her wheelchair. The rest of her day is spent knitting for other people and helping her mother with the household chores.

Nodira has never been to school because it is too far from her home and inaccessible for her wheelchair. A local teacher used to come and____her at home and, as a result, she was able to finish third grade. After that, her parents moved to another town and the tutor could not visit as much.

Despite the many difficulties in Nodira’s life she is lucky to be living with her family. The stigma(羞辱) attached to the children living with disabilities, combined with the lack of wheelchair access in schools and the economic difficulties faced by many Uzbek families, have led many parents to place children with disabilities in special institutions.

These days, Nodira does homework exercises at home and reads as much as she can. Still, it is unlikely that she will be able to finish her primary education, much less attend university. While missing out on an education is a great disappointment to Nodira, her greatest wish, for a true friend, can still come true. “What I want more than anything is a friend who also has a disability,” she says. “Somebody will not feel sorry for me or make fun of me, and will understand what my life is like.”

    C. she often dreams of moving freely without a wheel chair

    D. she never dreams of recovering from her disability

2Nodira does all the following every day EXCEPT _____.

    A. give food to some animals

    B. to make clothes from woolen or cotton thread

    C. drive cars designed for the disabled

    D. help with the housework

3The underlined word “tutor” in the 3rd paragraph can be replaced by “_____”.

    A. educate   B. visit   C. treat   D. comfort

4What Nodira wants most is ______.

    A. to go to university

    B. to walk on her own feet

    C. to finish her primary education

    D. to find a true friend

  • 22、Death is natural, but do you have any idea of the process of dying? Modern scientists divide the process of dying into two phases --- clinical or temporary death and biological death.Clinical death occurs when the vital organs, such as the heart or lungs, have ceased to function, but have not suffered permanent damage. The organism can still be revived(复活).Biological death occurs when changes in the organism lead to the “breaking up” of vital cells and tissues.Death is then unchangeable and final.

Scientists have been seeking a way to prolong the period of clinical death so that the organism can remain alive before biological death occurs. The best method developed so far involves cooling of the organism, combined with narcotic sleep.By slowing down the body’s metabolism(新陈代谢), cooling delays the processes leading to biological death.

To illustrate how this works, scientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkey called KetA. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcoticThen they surrounded her body with ice-bags and began checking her body temperature. When it had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began draining blood from an artery. The monkey’s blood pressure decreased and an hour later both the heart and breathing stopped: clinical death set in.For twenty minutes Keta remained in this state. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees. At this point the scientists pumped blood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artificial breathing. After two minutes Keta’s heart became active once more. After fifteen minutes, spontaneous(自发的)breathing began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes and lifted her headAfter six hours, when the scientists tried to give her a penicillin injection, Keta seized the syringe and ran with it around the room. Her behavior differed little from that of a healthy animal.

【1】For a person who suffers from the clinical death, _________.

    A. his most important organs are damaged.

    B. he still has the possibility of getting back to life.

    C. he cannot avoid final death.

    D. he is still very much alive

【2】Scientists try to make the time of clinical death longer in order to __________.

    B. bring vital cells and tissues back to active life.

    C. cool the organism.

    D. delay the coming of biological death.

【3】How did the scientists put Keta into clinical death?

    A. By putting her to sleep, lowering her temperature and draining her blood.

    B. By surrounding her body with ice-bags and draining her blood.

    C. By lowing her blood pressure and stopping her heart from beating.

    D. By draining her blood, lowering her blood pressure and stopping her breathing.

【4】All of the following indicate that the monkey has almost restored to her original physical state except the fact that__________.

    A. her heart beat again.

    B. she regained her normal breath.

    C. she rejected a penicillin injection.

    D. she acted as lively as a healthy monkey.

  • 23、   It was Halloween(万圣节), which is a big deal when you’re seven. I was sitting in my Sleeping Beauty costume, eagerly waiting for my dad to come home so he could take me to go trick or treating. My father had been away on a business trip. He was supposed to return earlier that day, but it was midnight…Finally I nodded off.

The next morning I guessed that my mom had already known something I didn’t find out for another couple of days. It was my dad who had a new identity(身份): plane crash survivor. He told us about it later. It had been raining as he got on the plane for home. The plane was cleared for taking off on one runway but turned too far and ended up taking off on another runway, which was closed. Because of the rain, the pilot couldn’t see the heavy construction equipment(施工设施)blocking the runway, and the plane crashed right into it. The left wing was torn off, the fuselage(机身)split in two, and fire shot through the plane. Nearly half of the passengers died, but amazingly, my dad was unhurt. He couldn’t breathe because of the smoke, so he ran toward the exit and walked out.

My father told me when the plane crashed, he first thought of us. As sad as he felt at the thought of never seeing us again, he also felt a sense of relief(解脱)that all his business and financial(财务的)worries would be over. When he survived, he saw it as a second chance. He valued his second life, so he sold his business and started a new one. Now he is a successful businessman. I’m so proud of my dad for this.
