  • 22、For a land where snow is hardly a winter rarity, it will come as little surprise that Scotland has several words for the cold white thing that falls from skies.

But few might expect the list to amount to a grand total of 421 separate terms designed to describe everything from small flakes(雪片)of wind-driven snow (“spitters”) to a figure in a snowstorm(“snaw-ghast”)

The list, which shows that the Scottish comfortably out-compete the 100 or so words used by the Inuits for snow, is part of a project to bring together the roots of every Scots word into a thesaurus (a book that contains lists of words that have similar meanings).

The online Scots Historicl Thesaurus draws on forgotten words from outdated dialects (方言)to terms still used across Scotland today to attempt to record the full range of language used to describe daily life.

Initial research at the University of Glasgow has focused on two areas close to Scottish hearts-----the weather and sport.

Dr Susan Rennie, a Scots specialist at the university, said: “Weather has been a vital part of people’s lives in Scotland for centuries. The number and variety of words in the language show how important it was for our ancestors to communicate about the weather, which could so easily affect their lives.”

Researthers found that alongside many words for cloud and mist, Scots have excelled down the ages at dreaming up ways to describe the details of types of snow and the way in which it falls.

Someone interested in the weather would mix up “flindrikin” (a slight snow shower with a “bin-drift”, used to describe thick drifting(堆积)snow. The white thing can also “frog” (start to fall), “feefle” (twist around a corner)or “feuchter” (fall in sight flakes).

1Which of the following comes as a surprise?

    A. There’s a lot of snow in Scotland

    B. There’re many dialects in Scotland

    C. Scotland has several words for snow

    D. There’re over 400 Scottish words for snow

2What’s the purpose of the online Scots Historical Theasaurus?

    A. To record the daily language used by Scots

    B. To protect endangered languages in Scotland

    C. To carry out research into the climate in Scotland

    D. To let foreigners have a better idea of Scots culture

3Dr Suan Rennie gave an explanation of ___________.

    A. how they made the world list

    B. how Scots communicate with each other

    C. why Scots like talking about the weather and sport

    D. why they did research on the vocabulary of the weather

4Which word describes the process of beginning to snow?

    A. Feefle   B. Frog

    C. Blin-drift   D. Snaw-ghast

  • 23、Are morning people born or made? In my case it was definitely made. In my early 20s, I hardly went to bed before midnight, and I would always get up late the next morning.

But after a while I couldn’t ignore the high relationship between success and rising early. On those rare occasions where I did get up early, I noticed that my productivity (效率) was always higher. So I set out to become a habitual early riser. But whenever my alarm went off, my first thought was always to stop that noise and go back to sleep. Eventually some sleep research showed that my strategy was wrong.

The most common wrong strategy is this: supposing you’re going to get up earlier, you’d better go to bed earlier. It sounds very reasonable, but will usually fail.

There are two main schools (流派) of thought on sleep patterns. One is that you should go to bed and get up at the same time every day. The second school says you should go to bed when you’re tired and get up when you naturally wake up. However, I have found both are wrong if you care about productivity. If you sleep at fixed hours, you’ll sometimes go to bed when you aren’t sleepy enough. You’re wasting time lying in bed awake.

My solution is to combine both methods. I go to bed when I’m sleepy and get up with an alarm clock at a fixed time. So I always get up at the same time (in my case 5 a.m.), but I go to bed at different times every night.

However, going to bed only when I’m sleepy, and getting up at a fixed time every morning are my ways. If you want to become an early riser, you can try your own.

【1】Why did the author want to become a habitual early riser?

    A. Because he / she found that the productivity was higher.

    B. Because he / she wanted to do morning exercise.

    C. Because he / she wanted to test which school is better.

    D. Because he / she wanted to have more sleep time.

【2】The author experienced all the following EXCEPT ________.

    A. going to bed after midnight

    B. asking scholars for advice on sleeping habits

    C. getting up early occasionally

    D. pressing off the alarm to go on sleeping

    【3】 What’s the author’s sleep pattern?

    A. Going to bed early and getting up early.

    B. Going to bed late and getting up late.

    C. Going to bed when sleepy and getting up at a fixed early time.

    D. Going to bed early and getting up late.

【4】The passage is mainly about ________.

    A. main schools of thought on sleep patterns

    B. how to have a good sleep

    C. wrong strategies for getting up early

    D. how to become an early riser

  • 24、I call my story the story of a bad boy, partly to distinguish myself from those faultless young gentlemen, and partly because I really was not an angel. I may truthfully say I was a friendly, impulsive(易冲动的)teenager. I didn’t want to be an angel. In short, I was a real human boy, such as you may meet anywhere in New England.

Whenever a new student came to our school, I used to ask him “My name’s Tom Bailey; what’s your name?” If the name struck me favorably, I shook hands with the new pupil cordially, but if it didn’t, I would turn and walk away, for I was particular on this point.

I was born in Rivermouth almost fifty years ago, but, before I became very well acquainted with that pretty New England town, my parents moved to New Orleans. I was only eighteen months old at the time of the move, and it didn’t make much difference to me where I was, because several years later, when my father proposed to take me North to be educated, I had my own view on the subject. I instantly kicked over the little boy, Sam, who happened to be standing by me at the moment, and declared that I woul be taken away to live among a lot of Yankees! You see I was what is called “ a Northern man with Southern principles,” I had no recollection of New England: my earliest memories were connected with the South. I knew I was born in the North, but hoped nobody would find it out. I never told my schoolmates I was a Yankee, because they talked about Yankees in a scornful(轻蔑的) way which made me feel that it was quite a shame not to be born in the South.

And this impression was strengthened by Aunt Chloe, who said, “There wasn’t no gentlemen in the North no way.”

With this picture of Northern civilization in my eye, the readers will easily understand my terror at the thought of being transported to Rivermouth to school, and possibly will forgive me for kicking over little Sam, when my father announced this to me. As for kicking little Sam, I always did that, more or less gently, when anything went wrong with me.

My father was greatly troubled by this violent behavior. As little Sam picked himself up, my father took my hand in his and led me thoughtfully to the library. He appeared strangely puzzled on learning the nature of my objections to going North.

“Who on earth, Tom, has filled your brain with those silly stories?” asked my father calmly.

“Aunt Chloe, sir, she told me.”

My father devoted that evening and several evenings to giving me a clear account of New England: its early struggles, its progress, and its present condition. I was no longer unwilling to go North; on the contrary, the proposed journey to a new world full of wonders kept me awake nights. Long before the moving day arrived I was eager to be off. My impatience was increased by the fact that my father had purchased for me a fine little Mustang pony, and shipped it to Rivermouth two weeks before the date set for our own journey. The pony completely resigned me to the situation. The pony’s name was Gitana, which is the Spanish for “gypsy”, so I always called her Gypsy.

Finally the time came to leave the vine-covered mansion among the orange-trees, to say goodbye to little Sam(I am convince he was heartily glad to get rid of me), and to part with Aunt Chloe. I imagine them standing by the open garden gate; the tears are rolling down Aunt Chloe’s cheeks; they and the old home fade away. I am never to see them again!

1The underlined word “cordially” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “_________”.

    A. sincerely   B. unbelievably   C. officially   D. closely

2The second paragraph is intended to ________.

    A. support Tom’s opinion that he is a “faultless young gentlemen”

    B. show just how much confidence Tom possesses

    C. contradict other people’s belief that Tom is not a well-behaved, friendly boy

    D. provide an example that Tom is friendly and not an angel

3Tom Bailey’s feeling on moving to Rivermouth can best be described as ________.

    A. cold, as he was too young to know any better

    B. unwilling until his father corrected his misunderstandings about life in the North

    C. angry because he would be forced to leave his pony Gypsy behind

    D. excited until he realized that he would have to part with Aunt Chloe and little Sam

4It can be inferred from “a Northern man with Southern principles” that ________.

    A. Tom is a Yankee, unwilling adapting to a Southern lifestyle

    B. even though Tom now lives in the South, he is proud of his Northern heritage

    C. Tom has successfully subscribed to some Northern values and some Southern values

    D. although Tom was born in New England he liked the way of life and culture in the South

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My adventure short story took place in Nepal, where I did the Mohare Danda Trek — which was no easy feat; however, in my opinion, it is truly one of the best hiking trails in the world. The Mohare Danda is one of Nepal’s newest treks, opened in 2010 as an Eco-trek to help support and develop the Parbat and Myagdi districts.

I’ve always enjoyed such kind of hikes as my friends and I conquer one destination after another. As you gaze upon the mountain peaks, interact with locals, and take in the nature that surrounds you, it’s hard not to feel immense gratitude for such adventures. This is particularly true when we reached the top of Mohare Danda at 3,313 meters (10, 869feet) and realized just how far we’d come.

It was a stunning hike, though my first day got off to a difficult start as I found myself violently ill. Ascending(爬升)higher and higher, sweat pouring down my face and my backpack threatening to pull me to the ground, I stopped constantly to gasp for breath and throw up quite a bit — until we reached the high altitude tea house where we’d be staying the night. The accommodation was rough, to say the least, which was a small family-run hotel with squat toilets, spiders, and no showers.

While the group went in for tea, I laid on the ground, nearly crying from the physical pain from the challenging hike and discomfort from the sickness. At that moment, I truly didn’t think I could do it. But then I opened my eyes to the beauty that surrounded me— scattered wild flowers all over the mountains, feasting yaks and buffaloes, high-altitude villages and the stunning terrain of the Annapurna Himalayas, which were the type of beauty you truly can’t find anywhere else —and realized that if I gave up now I’d never forgive myself.

The hotel owner was very kind, who brought me warm water and some medicine. He also suggested that I bring some oxygen just in case, and I did so, which turned out to be life-saving.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

After a good rest, the illness lessened and I felt eager to experience this hike.
