24、 Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus began in Wuhan in Dec 2019, China has mobilized (调动) the power of the whole country. Now, epidemic (疫情) control and prevention efforts are starting to take effect.
According to a key meeting held on Feb 21, the spread of the epidemic is being contained. On Feb 24, mainland areas outside of Hubei reported nine new infections (感染), the first single— digit (个位数) increase in weeks, according to the National Health Commission.
Vaccine (疫苗) development is also progressing. Some vaccines have been tested on animals, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology. “If vaccine development is compared to building a house, we have laid the foundation (地基) and the building is starting to emerge (出现) from the ground,” Zeng Yixin, deputy director of the National Health Commission, said to China Daily.
However, the turning point of the epidemic is yet to come. After millions of people return to work in major cities, the number of new infections should be kept low for two weeks. This is expected to be a turning point in China, according to the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies. But the situation in Hubei is still serious.
The situation outside of China is concerning. As of 4 pm on Feb 27, the total number of confirmed (确诊) infections in South Korea had risen to 1,766, Xinhua reported. Italy had reported 470 confirmed cases as of Feb 26, as well as 12 deaths. Singapore, Japan and Iran have also found cases.
“The window of opportunity (the best time to contain the outbreak) may be closing,” said WHO Director—General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He called on the international community to act quickly to control the epidemic before the window closes completely.

25、Imagine you are walking through the woods and you see a small dog. It looks cute and friendly. You move up to pet the dog. Suddenly it barks and tries to bite you. The dog no longer seems cute and you feel afraid and possibly angry. Then, as the wind blows, the leaves on the ground are carried away and you see the dog has one of its legs caught in a trap. Now, you take pity on the dog. You know it becomes unfriendly because it is in pain.
We all judge (评判) others all the time. It might be over small things, like a workmate who takes too long of a lunch break. Or it might be over bigger matters, such as a person who behaves selfishly or hurts our feelings. There are many reasons why we judge others. It is human nature to find a way to survive. When we see a dog (or a person) that might bite us, of course we feel threatened(威胁). We become nervous, want to fight back and are unable to see the possible reasons for another’s behaviour.
Although judgment is a natural reaction(反应), try to catch yourself before you speak, for you can’t get your words back. Make a short stop. Try to change your thought into a positive(正面的) one. After all, like that dog in the trap, we really don’t know the reasons for someone’s behaviour.
When someone disagrees with us or somehow makes our life difficult, remember that it’s usually not about us. It may be about their pain or struggle (挣扎). Why not give others the right to express their doubts? “Never underestimate the pain of a person,” Will Smith said, “because in all honesty, everyone is struggling. Some people are better at hiding it than others.”

27、 Which topic drew the most attention from people around the world in 2019? It was climate change, according to three well-known English dictionaries.
The Oxford, Collins and Cambridge dictionaries chose “climate emergency (气候紧急状态)", “climate strike (罢工)” and “upcycling”, respectively (分别地), as their Word of the Year". This tells us that climate change was a widely-discussed issue in 2019.
“Climate emergency” means a situation in which urgent (紧急的) action is needed to reduce climate change. “Climate strike” refers to people leaving work or school to call for more action to protect the environment. “Upcycling” refers to making new items out of old or used items to reduce waste.
Climate change has already affected the world in many ways. Take Venice, for example. Due to climate change, Venice experienced the worst flooding it has seen in the last 50 years in 2019. Many stores, restaurants and hotels were flooded. This caused serious damage totaling hundreds of millions of euros (欧元).
Although we've known about global warming for a long time, our large companies and governments have been slow to respond to it. The year 2019 might have been the turning point that will finally encourage our leaders to take responsibility.
“Decades ago, when the science on the climate issue was first increasing, the impacts (影响) could be seen as an issue for future generations,” Katharine Mach, a Stanford University climate scientist, told The New York Times. “ It's definitely our issue now.”
However, simply realizing that climate change is a threat (威胁) is not enough. We must take real action before it is too late.
