24、 Running in Cold Weather Improves Performance
Cold weather during winter months may keep many people from leaving home and running in the open air. However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, researchers say, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance.
Many people say running in the winter can be difficult. Two reasons are the low temperatures and bitter winds. Yet many runners might find it easier than running in hot weather. That could be because lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your body loses less water than in warmer conditions. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather. This information comes from sports scientists at St. Mary’s University in London.
John Brewer is a professor of applied sport science at St. Mary’s. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room they called an “environmental chamber”. The researchers then recreated summer and winter weather conditions in the room. The test subjects were asked to run 10,000meters under both conditions. Brewer says he and his team recorded biological measurements of the runners. “We’ve got a group of subjects into the environmental chamber, we’ve changed the conditions to recreate the summer or winter and we’ve got them to run a 10km under both of those conditions and taken various measurements(测量)on each runner while they’ve been completing their 10km.”.
They found that the runners lost water by around 30.38% more in those hotter conditions. Besides, Brewer says every movement runners make produces heat. He explains that one way in which we lose heat is by sweating(出汗). He says the body also loses heat by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin. “That heat builds up in the body and can be really damaging unless you can lose that heat. And it’s much harder to lose heat when the environment is warm as well.” And they found how they felt their perception of heat-was around a third lower when they were running in cold conditions. The body does not have to work as hard to pump blood to the skin’s surface Several websites note that the most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keeping as dry as possible is the most important when exercising in low temperatures. So, if you are a runner, don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running

26、 Imagine there is a glass of water on a table in front of you. It has water in it but it is not full. How do you describe the glass? Do you say it is half full or half empty?
If you say half full, you might be an optimist(乐观主义者). If you say half empty, you might be the opposite — a pessimist.
A new study suggests that your level of optimism may affect(影响)your health. People who are optimistic may live longer than those who are pessimistic.
Researchers at Harvard University’s School of Public Health in Boston did the study. They compared women with “a general expectation that good things will happen” with women who are less optimistic. They found that the optimists had a much lower risk of getting several deadly diseases, including cancer and heart diseases.
Kaitlin Hagan, a study leader says optimists can take better care of themselves by exercising, eating healthy food and getting enough sleep.
She also says earlier studies show that a person can use simple, low-cost methods(方法)to increase optimism. She says each night we can plan to do two or three simple, enjoyable activities. 27、Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said, “The British are the only people who like to be told how bad things are.” This is definitely true of British comedy. Most people think humor is about happy things, but not for the British. We love to use our cruel sense of humor to complain and be negative(消极的).
British comedy, for example, draws a fine line between comedy and tragedy. BBC’s The Office is a TV show, famous for its dry humor. The main character, David Brent, is a foolish man, and the show’s comedy comes from his delusions(错觉的). For example, he often tells himself that he is loved by everyone but the viewer can see that everyone hates him.
Stupid characters for the audience to laugh at are an old tradition in Britain. In Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night, the character Malvolio is an old man whom people play tricks on. The audience will laugh away, although the reality is that this man is a truly poor person.
This side of British humor is reflected(反映) in friendships as-well. At university, my friends and I would always laugh at one another. I had an American friend who actually found this sarcasm(挖苦) quite upsetting. She didn’t realize that in Britain, the better friends you are with someone, the more you laugh at them.
This way—laughing at everything—may sound rather depressing(沮丧), but our strange humor played a big part in British history. There is a saying in English: “________.” If you are ever on the receiving end of British sarcasm, you may feel like crying, but it’s best to just laugh it off!
【1】Which of the following can be put in the ________?
A.Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cry alone.
B.It never rains, it pours.
C.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
D.Don’t trouble trouble till trouble troubles you.
【2】How is British comedy different from other types?
A.It is often meaningless and boring.
B.It often laughs at human nature.
C.It is often about negative things.
D.It often makes people feel upset.
【3】How does the writer advise people to react(反应) to British humor?
A.Learn from it.
B.Don’t take it seriously.
C.Reply angrily.
D.Be careful not to make stupid mistakes.
【4】________ best shows the structure of the passage.
(①=Paragraph 1 ②=Paragraph 2 ③=Paragraph 3 ④=Paragraph 4 ⑤=Paragraph 5)
A.
B.
C.
D.
