  • 24、   When Randy Heiss went hiking behind his Patagonia, Ariz farm, the last thing he expected to find was a Christmas list from a little girl across the US-Mexico border( 边境). “I found this balloon on my morning walk near Patagonia on Sunday.

Attached(系上) to it was a piece of paper with the Christmas wishes from a little girl,” Heiss wrote on his Facebook page.

When he brought the list home to his wife, who speaks Spanish well, they discovered that the little girl had asked for toys, clothes, art supplies(美术用品) and many other gifts. That's when Heiss set out to make the little girl’s Christmas dreams come true. Heiss said he had tried to send Christmas letters to Santa Claus by balloon when he was a kid, but never received a reply.

Heiss sent a Facebook message on Wednesday to XENY, a radio station in Nogales, to see if it could help him find out the girl or her family. He later received a reply from the station, which was sure that the writer of the letter was an 8-year-old girl named Dayami. And the station wanted to set up a meeting between the two on Thursday. "It just changed my whole day, " Heiss told the  ashington Post. " Instead of going back to my office in Bisbee, I went with my wife to Walmart."The couple bought almost everything on Dayami's list. They also brought a few gifts for Dayami's little sister, Ximena. They told the children they were Santa's helpers.

Heiss, 60, said the experience was very helpful for him and his wife. Nine years ago, the couple's only son died. "Being around children at Christmas time has been absent in our lives." Heiss said. "We now have friends for life. For a day, that border fence would be moved away."

  • 25、   These days, reading the news on the Internet isn’t as easy as before. Many things are there to trick people. So, it’s hard to get the right information. Sometimes, people can’t even tell real news stories from advertisements (广告). The best way to fix it is to become Internet smart. Here are some tips to help you.

First, check the website. Make sure it’s from a real newspaper or news magazine. You can trust those to have real news. Second, look at the story itself. It should have a headline that tells you what the story is about. There should be another line under that. That’s the byline (署名行), and it has the writer’s name and the date of the story. If that isn’t there, the story might not be true.

Stories without bylines may look like real news stories. Sometimes, they have the words of “sponsored content (推广内容).” That means somebody paid for that information to appear. In other words, they are advertisements. Companies use them to attract readers to stories and buy their products.

Sponsored content fools many people. So do some pictures and videos. Those can also be advertisements and take you to other websites. If the pictures are too crazy to be true, they’re probably fake. News sites also have different parts for different kinds of news. If the stories are in the opinion part, be careful. Opinions are not facts, and the information may just be the writers’thoughts and feelings.

Remember, you can avoid all these tricks by being Internet smart.

1How does the writer start the passage?

A.By telling a story. B.By comparing two facts.

C.By describing the situation. D.By giving a question.

2What might the underlined word“headline” mean in Chinese?

    A.正文 B.标题 C.插图 D.排版

3Which of the following information online might be fake?

A.The news that has the writer’s whole name and the date.

B.The news story that includes a headline and a byline.

C.Advertisements with crazy pictures and videos.

D.All the stories in the opinion part on a news site.

4Why does sponsored content fool many people?

A.Because you have to pay for it before you read.

    B.Because it doesn’t have a headline or a byline.

C.Because it could be some writers’ personal opinion.

D.Because it may trick you into reading advertisements.

5What does the passage mainly want to tell us?

A.How to judge real news stories on the Internet. B.What useful things we can do on the Internet.

C.Where we can get real news on the Internet. D.Why we have to avoid all tricks online.

  • 26、Willa Cather once said, "When people ask me whether writing has been a hard or easy road, I always answer with the famous saying: The end is nothing;the road is all. That is what I mean when I say writing has been a pleasure. I have never used the computer with the thought that one more task had to be done."

Like most writers, Willa Cather did not write books for the money that they brought her, but rather for the pleasure that came in their writing. Her works were, like her, simple and full of the vigor of her days in Nebraska, where she grew from child to young womanhood and where she developed a deep love for the treeless land of the great plain with its wild flowers, wheat fields and rivers.

"It's a rather strange thing about the flat country," she wrote later. "It takes hold of you or it leaves you perfectly cold. A great many people find it very dull; they like a church tower, an old factory, a waterfall, the country all made to look like a German Christmas card...But when I come to the open plain, something happens. I'm home. I breathe differently."

1Willa Cather wrote because she found writing _____.

    A. simple and lively

    B. opened up a road to success

    C. neither too hard nor too easy

    D. interesting and enjoyable

2What was the place like where Cather grew up?

    A. It was cold, plain and without a church.

    B. It was vast, open and flat.

    C. It was like a German Christmas card.

    D. It was a colorful world of wild flowers.

3When she said "It takes hold of you or it leaves you perfectly cold.", Willa Cather  meant that _____.

    A. you either love the place or hate it

    B. you decide either to stay or to leave

    C. some find the place warm; others find it cold

    D. some find the place peaceful; others find it wild

4What happens when Cather comes to the open plain?

    A. She breathes differently from others.

    B. She wants to make the place her home.

    C. She feels completely comfortable.

    D. She finds the place similar to her home.

  • 27、   My daughter Becky graduated from Washington High School in June. During the graduation ceremony, one of her classmates gave a simple speech that I will always remember. She talked abut the "givers" of this world. She said, "You will be a success if you make another person smile. If you are a friend to someone who needs a little help, you will get an 'A'!"

After the ceremony, when all of the students were outside the hall trying to find their parents and friends, a man and his wife came to me and asked if I was Becky's mum. I said yes and the man handed me a gift and began to tell me how much they appreciated Becky's kindness to their daughter, Jessica, during the school sports meeting the week before.

Jessica's left leg was hurt and she was unable to finish the uphill race. Becky was worried about her and kept going back to check on her leg. Jessica's dad told me that Becky had shown more concern(关怀) for her daughter than the coach, and that he and his wife would never forget her kindness. Of course, by that time I had tears in my eyes. I was so proud of my daughter.

I asked him, "So, does Becky get an 'A'?"

He just smiled and said, "She gets an 'A'!"

1The speech that the writer will always remember is about ______.

A.how to succeed B.helping others C.how to study well

2After the ceremony, Jessica's parents looked for the writer to ______.

3Jessica ______ during the sports meeting.

4According to the passage we know that Becky was a person who ______.

5We can learn from the passage that ______.

A.people should show their kindness to others

B.students should get an "A" in every subject at school

C.parents should educate their children properly

  • 28、A young painter completed a nice picture. To get people’s t1 about his skills, he put it at a crossing on a busy street. And below it a board read, “Gentlemen, I have painted this piece. S2 I’m new, I might make some mistakes in it. Please put a cross (叉号) wherever you see a mistake.”

When he came back in the evening to c3 his picture, he was shocked to see that the whole picture was filled with crosses. And some people e4 wrote something on his picture. Sadly, he ran to his master and said, “I failed. And if this is what I have learned, I’m not w5 teaching. ”

The master smiled and suggested, “I’ll let you know that you’re a great artist. Now go to paint the same picture again and give it to me. ”

Then they went to the same street the next morning and put the new picture exactly at the same place. Now the master took out another board w6 said, “Gentlemen, I painted this piece. There might be some mistakes in it. I have put a box with colors and brushes just below. Please give me a h7. If you see a mistake, pick up the brush and correct it.”

Two days later, they came back to the place. The young painter was s8 to see that actually there was not a single correction done!
