24、My mother comes up to my room and tells me that my father has got a new job. That’s why we’re moving. “Don’t you want to know where we’re going?” she asks. “Not really,” I say. She tells me anyway. I pretend not to listen.
Every day my parents tell me something about the town that will become our new home. There is a statue (雕塑) honoring hero, a strawberry festival every year and the mayor(市长) used to be a professional football player. There are oak trees in our new neighborhood, just like the one on our yard. Pictures of these begin to fill in my mind. I start wondering what it might be like to live in such a town. On the day before we leave, I walk in the direction as if I were going to school. When I see the tiny old lady, I tell her goodbye, and she tells me to carry an umbrella when it rains. Her tiny dog holds out a tiny paw to shake my hand. The man at the newspaper store shakes my hand, too. The twins wave to me as they get on the bus. I go home, walking slowly through streets lined with oak trees.
A large truck is parked in front of our house. The movers are carrying boxes while my parents are putting suitcases into our car. Soon our house will be empty, but not for long. I know that somewhere there are parents telling their children about a new town filled with oak trees, a place where they will meet nice people.

25、
I have a problem. Her name is Luca. We do not see eye to eye.
Like yesterday, we saw the number 9, 999. She said, “All lose nines. They feel so... so purple!”
Purple? I saw it as logical and orderly. Not as colours. I think Luca and I live in different universes.
But we have to do a report on the Statue of liberty. I really doubt if I can work with her.
At our first meeting on Friday, we come up with a plan. She will make a Statue of Liberty, and I’ll write the report. But on Monday, with only one week until our report is due, she tells me she’s leaving to visit her great-grandfather for six days, because he’s ill. It means that I, the one who can’t even draw a stick figure, will have to make the statue. And she the one who doesn’t like to think logically, will have to write the report.
“Please be at my house at 2:00 on Sunday,” I say I cross my fingers.
While she’s gone, I spend lots of hours making the sculpture according to some directions I find online.
Sunday at 2:00 arrives, and Luca is late. Finally, I see her skipping down the sideway, carrying only a small piece of equipment
“What’s that?” I ask. “Where’s the report?”
“It’s a digital recorder,” she says. “A report didn’t feel right, so I did something else.”
I try to keep my voice calm as I say, “But this is not about feelings. It’s about the Statue of Liberty. Statues don’t have feelings.” Our project is due tomorrow. We’re doomed.
“Statues don’t have feelings, but my great-grandfather does.” Luca says.
Now I am quite sure that we’re from two different universes because I have no idea about what she’s talking about.
“I interviewed him about when he came to America and saw the Statue of Liberty,” she continues. “Listen.” She turns on the recording.
A scratchy voice comes on. “In Hungary, I had no food and hoped to go to America, where I could eat, have a better life. Finally I got on the ship. Then the sunshine started. Oh! There she was. Lady Liberty Like hope itself. All of us cried. All my life, I remember that feeling of seeing the lady.”
Looking at Luca. I think a while. “You are right That’s what the Statue of liberty is all about. Who says a report has to be on paper? I say quietly. And a smile spreads over her face.
Can you imagine what happens while we are making the presentation the next day? When Luca’s great-grandfather says “All my life. I remember that feeling, of seeing the Lady.” everyone is staring at our statue, quiet.

Before the elevator was invented in the late 1800s,buildings were much smaller and lower,as people did not want to walk up and down stairs(楼梯)all day. With the invention of the elevator came high-rise buildings and skyscrapers.
Some people find elevators make them a little uncomfortable because there are many people all standing close in a small room.It is best just to relax and enjoy the ride.
When the elevator doors open, stand aside and let everyone out before you try to get in.Even if you are in a hurry,it’s impolite to push someone so that you can get into an elevator.
Don’t stare at(盯着看)people or stand too close.Try to keep your eyes looking ahead or you could make others feel nervous or uncomfortable.
If you have to move past people to get out of the elevator, say“Excuse me,please”or“I’m sorry”rather than just push them out of the way.Others will think you’re welcome if you show some politeness.

27、The immune system is the body’s defender. It identifies, tracks down, and destroys troublemakers before they can hurt the body. Those troublemakers may be, for example, bacteria from a cut or splinter, a measles germ, a cold bug, or even a cancer cell. These invaders try to take over our tissues and feed off our bodies’ nutrients. If they succeed, we become sick or, sometimes, even die. It’s the job of our immune systems to destroy these invaders before they destroy us.
Say you picked up a flu virus last week. Perhaps it entered your body through a cut from a drinking glass, or from the air you breathe. Of course, you didn’t feel it, but the virus made its way into your bloodstream. As soon as it entered your body, it began to reproduce. Viruses have only one goal: to take over your cells. Once inside your body, viruses try to enter cells and disrupt their normal work. If left alone, these viruses would hurt so many cells that you would weaken, or worse, get a serious illness.
But this flu virus should not be so complacent as it seems to be. As it reproduces in your bloodstream, the virus is met by a certain kind of white blood cell, the lymphocytes. The lymphocytes are the foot soldiers that keep you alive.
The number of lymphocytes in your body is hard to imagine. Thousands of them could fit in the period at the end of this sentence. Your body holds about a trillion —that’s 1,000,000,000,000 of them, or about 3,000 in every drop of blood. Since you began reading this sentence, over 800,000 of them have been created and destroyed.
Some of these lymphocytes pass through a small walnut-sized organ called the thymus. The thymus is the base of the neck. Here, special hormones turn lymphocytes into fighting cells, called T cells. T cells have one terrific talent: They can tell the difference between friend and foe; what should be in our bodies and what shouldn’t. They do not affect the body ’s healthy cells. Yet they attack everything that is foreign to our bodies, such as germs, transplants, and even our own cells which have become abnormal, as in the case of cancer.
【1】What is the function of our immune system?
A. To take over our tissues and feed off our bodies’ nutrients.
B. To prevent bacteria or germs from entering the body.
C. To destroy the troublemakers in order that they might not hurt the body.
D. To fight against T cells.
【2】What does the underlined word “lymphocytes” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Food soldiers. B. Flu virus.
C. White blood cells. D. Troublemakers.
【3】The last sentence in paragraph 4 “since you began reading this sentence, over 800,000 of them have been created and destroyed” implies that ____.
A. this sentence contributes to the increase of the number of lymphocytes in your body
B. you would not realize that lymphocytes reproduce themselves rapidly but for th is sentence
C. because you read this sentence, a large number of lymphocytes have been consume d
D. the number of lymphocytes in your body is extremely large
【4】Which of the following questions best summaries the main idea of the whole passage?
A. How does the immune system attack the flu virus?
B. How does the immune system function in our body?
C. How do the lymphocytes work in our body?
D. What is the so-called immune system?
