You are in your last year of junior high school.(1)Have you thought about what it will be like in high school? Are you ready for a fresh start in a new environment? Some high school graduates from the United States share their tips:
Organize and plan your studies
“The biggest thing is to stay organized,” says Philip Tubiolo, a graduate from Bayport High School.(2)He says you can use either paper or online tools to help with your studies. "I would transfer (转换) paper notes online and make study guides. Everything was in one spot (场所) for finals and midterms."
Find your interests
“I knew I was more of a science kid,” says Bayport’s Tubiolo. “I took AP Biology in 10th grade and loved it.”(3)AP classes are college-level classes that high school students can take.He also joined his school’s Science Olympiad team.(4)在一次国际数学比赛中,他赢得了一等奖。He even decided on a college major, although most students don’t need to make this choice so early.
Find healthy ways to relieve stress and have fun
“It’s not just study, study, study,” says Roslyn High School student Todd Warshawsky. "I was a track (田径) runner. That was a stress reliever from study." Sachem North High School graduate Erin Maryzek agrees. “(5)我们都应该学会在学校生活中找到一些有趣的事情,” says the Northeastern University freshman.

24、 Once there was a poor lady who lived on a hill near the sea. She lived a lonely life. She was so poor that she had to work hard every day.
But one night as she sat at the table, the lady said to herself, “Why can’t I do good to others?” At last, she came up with an idea.
She decided to keep a lighted lamp (灯) at the window for the sailors every night. She found that ships sometimes broke up on the rocks in the sea, since there was no lighthouse to warn them of the danger at night. Maybe her lamp would warn them when their ships came near the rocks on the coast.
The lady felt glad when the thought came through her mind. So she worked late and made money to buy the oil for the lamp and then she placed the lamp at the window each night. In this way she saved many lives.
She did this for five years without the hope of reward ( 报酬). However, good acts were often found out. The sailors whose lives had been saved began to send gifts to her. They sent her tea from China, cloth from India, silk from France and grapes from Spain. But the poor lady did not need these gifts to make her happy. She gave many of them to the poor and the sick.
She was happy with the thought that she was doing good. So, as long as she lived, she lit her lamp each night, and placed it at the window.
【1】What can we know about the lady?
A.She knew the sailors. B.She worked on a ship.

【2】Why did the ships sometimes break up on the rocks in the sea?
A.Because the ships were not built well enough. B.Because there was no lighthouse.
C.Because the sailors didn’t have enough experience. D.Because the rocks were too large to avoid.
【3】How might the sailors feel when they saw the lamp at the window?
A.Lucky. B.Thankful. C.Sorry. D.Proud.
【4】What can we learn from the passage?
A.No pains, no gains.
B.Where there is a will, there is a way.
C.Nothing is more important than safety.
D.It is always worth doing something good for others.
25、Paul Nicklen waited patiently on a sheet of ice in the Arctic. He was there to take pictures for National Geographic. Finally,he saw something big and white. It was a polar bear, swimming towards him in the icy water.
Paul lay down on the ice to get a better photo, but the polar bear jumped out of the water and tried to attack him!Luckily for Paul, the ice cracked or broke and the bear fell back into the water. The polar bear wasn’t so lucky. It couldn’t get a meal and had to swim farther away to find food.
To understand the polar bear’s problem, you need to know two things about the Arctic.First, the Arctic is mostly ocean.Second, ice covers a lot of the Arctic Ocean. In winter, the ice forms a thick, white sheet, but in summer, the ice becomes thinner and breaks into pieces.Sea ice is the key to survival for Arctic animals. However, because of global warmin9,Arctic temperatures are rising and polar ice is melting.
Polar bears need ice to hunt seals, their favourite meal. They stand on the ice waiting for the seal to come up for air.As Arctic ice melts, polar bears have to swim farther to find ice floes,or large pieces of floating ice.Sometimes, bears have to swim more than 200 km to find an ice floe. Some bears cannot swim that far and sadly they drown.
On his last trip,Paul Nicklen saw three dead bodies of polar bears. Before global warming threatened Arctic ice,a dead bear was a rare sight.Paul is sad to see the dead bodies.Wildlife experts think global warming will have a terrible effect on polar bears. In the future, polar ice will continue to shrink and endanger the bears. Some scientists believe 65 percent of the world’s polar bears will disappear by 2050.In other words, polar bears are in great danger.
