26、 I always pictured myself graduating from college, getting a cool job and even having a cute little place of my own. So far, I have a master's degree and the coolest job ever as a physician assistant. But instead of waking up in a pretty apartment, I hear the earlymorning sound of my parents making coffee downstairs.
At 27, I still live with my parents, and I love it.
My decision to live at home was not one of absolute necessity. As a physician assistant, I make a good salary and would be able to live on my own comfortably if I needed to do so. By the time I finished graduate school, I had had a D|S150,000 debt from both undergraduate and graduate education. With several of these loans earning a 7.9% interest rate, my father calculated that my loans were increasing by D|S15 a day in interest alone. At this rate, it would take me 30 years to pay off my student loans, with much of the payment going straight to interest. At last, I decided to live with my parents.
Beyond the endless supply of homecooked meals, the best thing about moving back home is that I am not alone. Several of my physician assistant friends are in the same boat as I am — we are all highly educated, whitecollar employees who live at home. Our coworkers in the medical field think it is a great idea because many of them are facing the same piles of debt. They often say if they could do it all again, they would do the same thing.
There's a stigma (耻辱) that comes along with this arrangement. Some people might assume that we are too lazy to find a job. I don't think my neighbors understand it, as they continually ask me when I am going to graduate and if I am old enough to look after their children. My mom just tells them that I'm successful, welleducated and that I save lives.
I love living at home. Now I've paid off D|S68,000 of my student loans. Our new relationship is symbiotic (共生的). My parents benefit from having an extra set of hands around the house to help with housework and a constant source to explain all popculture references.
【1】The author once imagined ________.
A.having her own beautiful house
B.having her parents pay off her loans
C.living with her parents after graduation
D.always being taken care of by her parents
【2】Why did the author decide to live with her parents?
A.Because she missed them very much.
B.Because she couldn't cook by herself.
C.Because she needed to repay a huge debt.
D.Because she was not able to support herself.
【3】What is the author's coworkers' attitude towards her living with her parents?
A.Critical.
B.Approving.
C.Doubtful.
D.Uninterested.
【4】The author's neighbors ask her to look after their kids mainly because ________.
A.they know she is a helpful lady
B.they know she is welleducated
C.they think she doesn't have a job
D.they think she is popular with kids
27、Regardless of whether English is your first language, you won’t make a good impression if you can’t write well. 【1】 To improve your written English, learn the rules for correct grammar and punctuation and thoroughly proofread your written work. A large vocabulary will also help your writing stand out. Above all, be willing to practice every day and put in the work to build strong English writing skills.
Expand Your Vocabulary
You’d better read books written in English. Books and magazines can introduce you to new words, provided you pay attention to the words and look up the ones you don’t know rather than skipping over them. 【2】 Read the whole definition for the word, and think about how the author is using it in context. You may consider doing crossword puzzles to practice vocabulary. Crossword puzzles give you an opportunity to learn new words, as well as recall words you’ve learned and think about different contexts and meanings of words you already know.
【3】
To improve grammar, you should never ignore the importance of reading out your writing loud. Grammar and punctuation errors stand out when you read your writing out. As you read, pay attention to where you pause and make sure your punctuation reflects those pauses. Read the whole piece from beginning to end, looking at how the sentences flow together. You’d better also spend much time studying word usage to get the hang of grammar and punctuation. There are many websites that have free grammar and word usage lessons, tips, and exercises. 【4】
Develop Good Writing
Habits use a conversational writing style. The most readable writing is that written in the way people talk. So keep your sentence structure simple, and use mostly common, ordinary words that most people know. And remember to outline longer or more complex pieces. If you’re writing something longer than a paragraph, or if you need to make several different points, an outline will help you organize your thoughts. 【5】 That is because you won’t be worried about forgetting something. Lastly, read over everything you write, even something as short as a text message. Over time, you’ll notice an improvement in your first drafts.
A.Improve Grammar and Punctuation.
B.Read your own writing out aloud.
C.It will also make your writing flow more easily.
D.People may assume you are uneducated, careless, or have a poor work ethic.
E.Talking to actual native speakers is the most effective way to improve your English skills.
F.You can use these to learn new skills and practice incorporating them into your writing.
G.Keep a dictionary nearby when you’re reading, and look up any word you don’t know.

29、Stereotypes (刻板印象) are widely held but very general, simplified opinions about other people. Many of us start to use stereotypes at school — the cool kids or the hot kids — we know all the different ones by heart.
Looks, clothes, personal traits (特征) and interests are all aspects which, on the surface of it, make us different from our contemporaries. Students pounce on these in order to categorise others. “When you’re a social animal, you need to understand who is a member of your pack, and who is a member of a different pack,” says psychology professor, John Dovidio.
A girl dressed all in black may seem a bit depressed. But perhaps, deep down inside, she just likes black and is actually cheerful. She has the same interests as you — (the “cool kid”) — but she just dresses differently. The problem of typecasting is that it involves using labels which are merely shells (外表) containing assumptions. It makes one wonder why people see only a narrow view of a complicated human being.
According to Dovidio, even if we think we don’t stereotype others, we do. “We categorise immediately and without thinking,” says Dovidio. “And we stereotype others not just on their appearance, how they dress or act, but — wrongly — on their race and sex too.”
Student stereotypes may have special meanings, as teens are in the process of forming their own identity and figuring out who they feel most comfortable with. To some extent, stereotyping offers a sense of order, direction and connection to the close friends they make over time. But it’s too simple to make assumptions that “they” — teenagers in other groups — are alike or different from “us”. It’s easy to throw a group of people into a bucket (水桶) and judge them as a whole; it’s much more difficult to look at each person as an individual. On the other hand, Jim, another high school student, says “by labelling people we’re actually highlighting similarities not differences. If we didn’t stereotype, it would make many things today impossible. Think of marketing studies focused on specific audiences, or clubs for people with similar interests or hobbies.”
【1】Which can best replace the underlined part “pounce on” in paragraph two?
A.Put up with.
B.Make fun of.
C.Take pride in.
D.Catch hold of.
【2】What does the author want to suggest by mentioning the girl in black?
A.Don’t distinguish yourself from others.
B.Don’t make simple things complicated.
C.Don’t identify others by their appearance.
D.Don’t label others according to their personal traits.
【3】What do Dovidio’s words in paragraph four tell us?
A.We cannot avoid being stereotyped.
B.We may correctly recognise others’ sex.
C.We cannot help the way we react to others.
D.We may make wrong judgements about ourselves.
【4】Which word best describes Jim’s attitude to stereotypes?
A.Positive.
B.Uninterested.
C.Uncertain.
D.Critical.
