二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Humans take first place when it comes to making long-term changes to the earth, but we aren’t the only species to make a mark with infrastructure(基础设施).A new look at an 1868 map has shown that beaver dams (河狸坝)in Michigan have been holding strong for at least 150 years.

The map is the work of Lewis Henry Morgan, who first traveled to Michigan in the late 1850s for his railroad work and started studying the beavers in what is now the city of Ishpeming. The resulting book, 1868’s The American Beaver and His Works, had a map that included 64 beaver dams and their ponds (池塘).It was Carol Johnston of South Dakota State University who realized the value in Morgan’s map to modern ecologists (生态学家). She created an updated version using air photos and compared the two, discovering that about 72 percent of the dams and ponds still exist.

While not all of the dams are still in active use, the findings show the unusual engineering abilities of the North American beaver. The fact that so many structures are still standing after all this time is truly impressive; they are even older than many of humankind’s most beloved structures, including the Eiffel Tower. “The findings prove that beaver works have been changing the North American landscape for centuries,” Johnston says.

For more, check out Morgan’s work in full on the Internet Archive, which includes lovely passages like this one, “As the dam is not a necessity to the beaver, his normal living place being rather natural ponds and rivers, and holes in their banks, it is an amazing fact that he should have voluntarily worked himself, by means of dams and ponds of his own construction, from a natural to an artificial way of life.”

On that note, don’t forget that International Beaver Day is April 7. These guys deserve some serious praise.

【1】Which word best describes the beaver dams according to the text?

    A.Huge.

    B.Common.

    C.Simple.

    D.Strong.

【2】What can Morgan’s map be used for?

    A.Helping scientists study environmental changes.

B.Helping railroad builders avoid dangerous areas.

    C.Helping Johnston remap Michigan’s rivers.

D.Helping researchers study how ponds are formed.

    【3】What do Johnston’s findings show?

    A.Beavers are dying out.

    B.Beavers are born engineers.

    C.Beavers are teamwork animals.

    D.Beavers are important to humans.

【4】What does the passage mentioned in paragraph 4 show?

A.Morgan’s joy of figuring out the dams’ function.

B.Morgan’s wish to start International Beaver Day.

C.Morgan’s pride in finding beavers’ natural habitat.

D.Morgan’s surprise at beavers’ willingness to build dams.

  • 27、There was a strange stillness. Where had the birds gone? I was a spring without bird voices. Only silence lay over the fields and woods...

Rachel Carson was a scientist, but these lines from her 1962 book Siln Spring show her talent as writer. By imagining a world without birds, she aimed to warn the scientific community and the general public of the damaging effects of human activity on ecosystems-in particular, of the harmful use of pesticides(杀虫剂),such as DDT. She believed that the chemical industry was knowingly causing ham to plants, animals and even humans, and wished to see pesticides used in a more responsible, limited and carefully monitored way.

Silent Spring contains a lot of scientific research and case studies, which proves some progirammes did nothing to reduce the problems they were originally designed to solve. And the 50or so pages at the end of the book list Carson’s sources, showing how thorough and precise she was as a scientist.

Carson’s message has caused a great increase in environmental awareness: the use of DDT was banned and the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)was established in the US. Silent Spring was therefore regarded as a milestone in the launch of green movement in the Western world.

Silent Spring was not, however, received positively by everyone. Though supported by most scientists, the book quickly became a target for critics in the pesticide industry. They said Carson did not understand the science because she was a marine biologist rather than a chemist. Some also said that her work was more emotional than scientific. These were attempts to damage Carson’s reputation and stop her work from influencing public policy, but she remained determined to stand by her research.

Personally, I enjoyed Carson’s book. Today, more than 50 years after it was published, the voice of Silent Spring is still ringing loud and clear.

【1】Why did Carson describe a world without birds?

    A.To create a poetic atmosphere.

    B.To show Carson’s talent as a writer.

    C.To raise environmental awareness.

D.To arouse readers’ interest in science.

【2】What do we know about Carson?

    A.She is a committed scientist.

    B.She is an uninfluential biologist.

    C.She is a well-recognized chemist.

    D.She is a productive writer.

【3】What was the possible reason why Carson’s book became a target for critics?

    A.She couldn’t control her emotion.

    B.She went against science.

    C.She lacked scientific spirit.

    D.She threatened their profit.

    【4】What is the text?

    A.A book review.

    B.A news journal.

    C.A research article.

    D.A personal profile.

  • 28、We have some practically secret national parks on our lists that you'll want to visit this spring.

    Guadalupe Mountains National Park

The most visually striking point here is El Capitan. The massive cliff (悬崖), 2.5 times as tall as the Empire State Building, towers over the rest of the park, which offers you a perfect spot for taking impressive pictures. You can also wander the Salt Basin Dunes, 2,000 acres of shockingly white sands. If you're taking very long hikes, bring plenty of water and some protein-rich snacks.

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument

The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument preserves more than 87,500 acres of wild rivers and thick forests. In addition to hiking and camping, Katahdin is a great spot for hunting and fishing. Bring some hiking boots and perhaps trekking poles (登山杖)to cross these rocky forest trails. The park has a day use fee of $5, and the first-come, first-serve campsites cost $8 per night.

    North Cascades National Park

Though the snowy peaks of the North Cascades are dangerous in the winter, it turns into a thick and green park in the warmer months, filled with beautiful mountain valleys and clear lakes. You can take a guided nature hike or go fishing. Winter driving conditions in the North Cascades can be dangerous, due to water, frost, snow, or ice on the roads.

    Organ Mountains.—Desert Peaks National Monument

This is not a national park, but is a national monument. It is home to several rare species of plants and animals, and lava (炫岩)flow. There are excellent chances for hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and nature photography, as well as overnight hiking. You can also go primitive camping anywhere in the monument for free. It's highly recommended that you should bring plenty of water and sunscreen, and know your fitness level ahead of time.

【1】What may attract a photographer most to go to the first park?

    A.The steep cliff.

    B.The low ticket price.

    C.The towers in the park.

【2】How much should one pay for camping in the second park for 2 days and 1 night?

  • 29、Strangely enough, music is no fun at all for some people. About four percent of the population is what scientists call “amusic”, people who are amusic are born without the ability to recognize or reproduce musical notes. Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two songs. Amusics can only hear the difference between two notes if they are very far apart on the musical scale.

As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. Their inability to enjoy music set them apart from others. It can be difficult for other people to identify with their condition. In fact, most people cannot begin to grasp what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping mall can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics intentionally stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in withdrawal and social isolation. “I used to hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic.

By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify this unusual condition.

Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from the brains of people who can appreciate music. The difference is complex, but it doesn’t involve defective hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding ordinary speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can’t see certain colors.

Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed. For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. There is a name for her condition. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say, No, thanks, I am amusic,” says Margaret. “I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy. ”

【1】Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE about amusics?

A.They are born without the ability to recognize musical notes.

B.They prefer to make metal noise rather than listen to music.

C.They hate music and often keep off places where there is music.

D.They are set apart from others as they fail to enjoy music.

【2】How do scientists finally identify the unusual condition of amusic?

A.By sort and compare some data.

B.By carrying out a lot of experiments.

C.By drawing on research results of others.

    D.By studying people with amusic.

【3】What does the underlined word most probably mean in the passage?

    A.detective

    B.acute

    C.imperfect

    D.artificial

【4】In the last paragraph, Margaret expressed her wish that ________.

A.her problem with amusic had been diagnosed earlier

B.she hadn't felt embarrassed about her problem

C.her amusic problem could be cured as soon as possible

D.there could be a better name for her condition
