  • 22、Sign language is a kind of body language. Body language includes eye contact, walking postures, standing postures and gestures. Body language can express all kinds of thoughts and feelings. Different cultures have different body language. Here are some common gestures in different cultures.

In China, a thumb-up sign is used to praise someone for being “good”, “great” and “smart”. In America, a thumb-up sign means “It’s good” or “It’s OK” while a thumb-down sign means the opposite (相反的). But in some countries, there are other meanings. For example, in Japan, that also means “man”, “your father” and “the highest”. In South Korea, it also means “the chief”, “one’s own father”, “minister” and “captain”. In Australia, the United States, Mexico and other countries, it means “the fate of prayer (祈祷的命运)”. As for French people and Indians, this gesture can be used when asking for a ride.

Point with your forefinger (食指). It is very impolite in Europe and America. British and American people make a circle with the thumb and forefinger and the other three fingers keep straight, which means “Excellent”.

Put out your forefinger. In the United States, it’s used to ask someone to wait; French people ask for an answer by using this gesture; In Myanmar, it means “please”; In Singapore, it shows something or someone is the most important.

Hold out your forefinger and middle finger and make the V word. “V” is the first letter of victory (胜利), so it means “victory” in Britain, France and other countries. But in Serbia, the gesture stands for “heroism” and in the Netherlands, it stands for “freedom”.

Besides, the “OK” sign means “money” in Japan while it means bad behavior in Latin America.

【1】What does the underlined word “that” refer to?

    A.The thumb-down sign.

    B.The thumb-up sign.

    C.The hand-up sign.

    D.The hand-down sign.

    A.①② / ③④⑤⑥

  • 23、   What does an astronaut eat in apace? This is a question that will puzzle many people. In the early space travel years, astronauts ate dehydrated (脱水的) foods that were eaten through straws (吸管). In today’s space-age, the food that they eat is quite different. They eat food in the same way as people do on Earth.

Astronauts are able to prepare and eat a variety (多样化) of foods in space now. Some can be eaten in their natural form, like fruits, while some need to add water, like noodles. However, there are no fridges, so the food has to be prepared and eaten without being stored for a long time. When the astronauts are hungry, they simply eat the food by opening the food packages and eat with a fork, knife and spoon.

Just like people on Earth, astronauts also eat three meals a day which include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sometimes they also eat snacks. The US space agency NASA has found out that an astronaut’s diet reduces (减少) by about 70% on a space mission, though he has a wide range of foods to choose from like nuts, chicken, beef, seafood and candies. Drinks in the spaceship include coffee, tea, juices, and lemonade.

Astronauts can also ask for a special food that they would like to have in space. Scientists are always experimenting and trying out different space foods that can be offered to astronauts when on space missions (任务).

1In the early space travel years, astronauts ________.

    A. ate dehydrated food

    B. drank milk through straws

    C. ate the same food as on Earth

    D. ate with a fork, knife and spoon

    2In today’s space age, astronauts ________.

    A. can only eat fruit and noodles

    B. can’t eat anything in a natural way

    C. can use the fridges to store the food

    D. can eat many kinds of food like on Earth

3Scientists are always experimenting and trying out different space foods that can be offered to Astronauts ________.

    A. when they exercise

    B. when they are sick

    C. when on space missions

    D. when they relax themselves

  • 24、Shirley, an elephant, has something to say. She opens her mouth and speaks. The nearby elephants understand the sound, but it is just noise to me.

What is Shirley exactly saying? Scientists are not sure, but they are trying to find out how elephants communicate. I visited Shirley at the Elephant Sanctuary (避难所) in Hohenwald, Tennessee. The sanctuary is home of Shirley and five other elephants —Bunny, Jenny, Sissy, Tarra and Winkie. All six animals were once in zoos or circuses (马戏团). Now they walk freely in the forests.

    A noisy group

Not all the elephants speak like Shirley. Tarra speaks like a sea lion when she is happy. Bunny squeaks (吱吱叫) often. I soon get used to hearing the different voices of the elephants. When one gray giant comes close to me, I know which elephant it is.

Elephants also communicate in a way that people can’t hear. Scientists believe that elephant’s sound can travel for miles. Elephants in a group use it to keep in touch when they are alone.

           Old friends

The elephants speak to one another for the same reasons people talk. Sometimes they even shout with excitement. When Shirley first came to the sanctuary, Jenny looked at her and began to shout. Shirley shouted back. At first, the animal keepers had no idea what it was about. Later, they discovered that Shirley and Jenny had stayed together for 20 years earlier in a circus. They still knew each other.
