24、It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly (精彩地) written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I knew that I was talking to a book liar (a person who tells lies).
And it seems that my friend is not the only one. About two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven't. In the World Book Day's “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and different authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I'm not one to lie too often (I'd hate to be caught out), I’ll admit (承认) here and now that I haven't read the whole top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it's really brilliant.
The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven't read him, but haven't lied about it either) and Herman Melville.
Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be better if the conversation became more in-depth!
But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). 42 percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I'll come clean: I do this and am surprised that 58 percent said they had never done so).
【1】How did the author find his friend a book liar?
A. By telling it from his way of speaking.
B. By looking into his background.
C. By mentioning a famous name.
D. By discussing the book itself.
【2】Which of the following is a “guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report?
A. Charles Dickens is very low on the top-ten list.
B. 42% of people pretended (假装) to have read 1984.
C. The author admitted having read 9 books.
D. Dreams From My Father is hardly read.
【3】By lying about reading, a person hopes to _______.
A. control the conversation

C. learn about the book
D. make more friends
25、I owe (亏欠) my father a huge thank-you ! Sure, I need to thank him for all those years of paying my bills, fixing my bikes, and providing a shoulder to cry on. But this year I realized that his contributions (贡献) to my childhood were much more than that.
I grew up as Daddy’s Little Girl. If I had a problem that needed fixing or a question that needed answering, he was the one I ran to. He helped me get through everything from math homework as a student to career (职业) choices as a young adult . He always expected that I do my best in whatever I did, and he believed I could succeed in anything I put my mind to. As a result, I learned to hold myself to those same standards. He always showed me unconditional love, which helped me learn to love myself. It was something I’d taken for granted until I realized from talking with my friends that they had no similar view of their self-worth. Having fathers that didn’t believe in them left them to grow up not believing in themselves.
As I was growing up, my father also showed to me how a woman should be lavished. He got along with my mom with love and respect. As a result, I grew to expect nothing less than that from the men I dated and from the man I would finally marry. Dad was a living picture of godliness (虔诚), honesty and responsibility. It was only recently that I realized what a deep influence fathers have on their daughters’ lives. That is why I want to thank my dad for the example of love that he has been to me throughout my life.

27、More and more people like bicycling and it is no surprise. It’s fun, healthy and good for the environment. Maybe that’s why there are more and more bicycles on roads worldwide today. Bikes can take you almost anywhere, and there is no oil cost!
However, two centuries ago, when bicycles were first invented, they were used only for transportation. In the eighteenth century, people usually traveled by horse and wagon(马车). In 1817, an early “bicycle” was made in Germany. Its frame(车架) was made of wood. It didn’t have any pedals(踏板). People had to push with their feet. In the 1830s, the first bicycle was invented. Pedals were made for the bicycle. In the 1860, Frenchman Pierre Miehaux and his son gave the bicycle a new look. In 1867, they brought the bicycle to the world Expo(世博会). Since then, the bicycle was more and more popular in Europe. In the 1870s, the front wheel was much larger than the back one. This made it very hard to ride. It was also very expensive. In the 1890s, bicycles with same—sized wheels came out in North America and Western Europe. They were much safer, cheaper and more comfortable.
In China there are shared bikes on the roads. They have saved us a lot of time during emergency situations, and on beautiful, clear days. However, bicycling is not easy in our city. There are no bicycle lanes(车道), and bikers have to travel next to cars in car lanes.
