四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Books can be a best friend. But nowadays not many people enjoy reading books , and most people don’t start to read until they have the time. Do you know how to enjoy reading books?

You’ll have to decide where to find a book first. Look for books in a library or a big bookstore. You can also ask friends or borrow books from them if you can check out their books.

If you find a good book, just sit in a comfortable chair or sofa and begin reading. Be sure to sit comfortably, or you will get tired soon. It will help you a lot to sit comfortably while reading.

The environment for reading is important, too. It has to be quiet, so that you can be calm before you begin to read. If there is too much noise, it’s not good for you to read.

When you start to read, don’t think about anything else, but what you’re reading. Put yourself into the story. If you read carefully, it will be difficult to put the book down.

Read and really enjoy it. Reading is not running your eyes over a book. But if you need to, read out the book fast, then you do not need to pay attention to every word. Just read and enjoy the book.

  • 25、Every people(民族) uses its own special words to show its ideas and feelings. Some of these expressions are commonly used for many years. Others are popular for just a short time. One such American expression is “Where’s the beef?” It is used when something is not as good as it is said to be. In the early 1980s “Where’s the beef?” was one of the most popular expressions in the United States. It seemed as if everyone was using it at the time.

Beef, of course, is the meat from a cow, and food is more popular in America than a hamburger made from beef. In the 1960s a businessman named Ray began building small restaurants that sold hamburgers at a low price. Ray called this “McDonald’s”. Ray became one of the richest businessmen at last in America.

Other business people watched his success. Some of them opened their own hamburger restaurants. One company(公司) called “Wendy’s” said its hamburgers were bigger than those sold by McDonald’s or anyone else. The Wendy’s Company began to use the expression “Where’s the beef?” to make people know that Wendy’s hamburgers were the biggest. The Wendy’s television advertisement(广告) showed three old women eating hamburgers. The bread that covered the meat was very big, but inside there was only a bit of meat. One of the women said she would not eat a hamburger with such a little piece of beef. “Where’s the beef?” she shouted in a funny way. • 26、   I worked as a music teacher for twenty-five years. I have always known that music touches the soul (灵魂).

I would like to share how music broke through a physical problem and made a connection with a young student. For a few years I have been happy to teach pre-school disabled students one afternoon a week. One of my students was a young girl I will call Cindy. Cindy was six years old, and she had difficulty walking, and could not speak. We almost sat on the floor for our music lessons and Cindy liked to sit on my knee. One of her favorite songs was "John the Rabbit". I sang the song and the students clapped, "Oh, yes!" Cindy liked to put her hands together with mine and clap with me. We probably performed. She never said or sang a word.

One day, Cindy turned around, looked at me dead in the eye, clapped her tiny hands twice and said the words "Oh, yes!" I opened my mouth in surprise for a moment. Cindy could speak!

Several years later, I passed by Cindy on the street in town. I stopped my car and waved to say hello. She waved back with a big smile and then clapped her hands twice. She was mimicking (模仿) the song. I think every child has the ability to learn and grow. We should find each child's light.
