四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   A few days ago, I received a letter from my Aunt Lorraine. It was a handwritten letter thanking me for some Shanghai cookies I had sent her. Aunt Lorraine is ninety-one years old and she has wonderful manners. That is why she sent me the “thank you” letter. She also has wonderful handwriting. Her penmanship (书法) is smooth. Each individual letter and word is perfectly formed. She is a pleasure to read.

Aunt Lorraine was educated half a century ago. At that time, penmanship was considered an important skill. Now, it is the age of e-mail and social media. Few people have the time or desire to practice their penmanship or write letters by hand.

This is unfortunate. In my view, good penmanship still counts. This is especially true in school. If you want to get good grades on your essays (短文), neatness will be important. Your essay might be full of good ideas. However, messy handwriting can turn an A into a B. Awful handwriting can get you a D!

Good penmanship has other benefits, too. Since it’s a skill, it trains your brain and develops your learning abilities. It also helps you organize your thoughts. And, believe it or not, that slow process of pushing a pen along paper improves your reading, spelling and even your pronunciation of English.

Apart from all these educational benefits, good penmanship also has personal benefits. A neatly written letter to a friend is something he or she will treasure forever. A letter that looks as if a chicken had danced across the paper will be quickly thrown away. I have kept the letter from my Aunt Lorraine. It’s a great treasure!

【1】Why did Aunt Lorraine write a letter to the author?

    A.To express her thanks.

    B.To show her wonderful manners.

    C.To make herself pleased.

D.To set a good example to the author.

【2】What is the Chinese meaning of the underlined word “counts” in Paragraph 3?

    A.计数在内

    B.被接受

    C.有指望

    D.有价值

【3】According to the author, which of the following is the benefit of neat handwriting?

① Making new friends.   ② Getting good grades on your essays.

③ Organizing your thoughts.  ④ Improving your English pronunciation.

⑤ Making your essay full of good ideas.

    A.②④⑤

    B.①③④

    C.②③④

    D.①②⑤

【4】The underlined part in the last paragraph is used to describe ________.

    A.a boring letter

    B.a great treasure

    C.bad handwriting

    D.good penmanship

【5】What does the author want to do by writing this article?

A.To express the importance of neat handwriting.

B.To share her pleasure of hearing from her aunt.

C.To talk about her experiences of practicing penmanship.

D.To encourage people to write letters by hand instead of e-mailing.

  • 25、When you have a problem with your homework, what do you do? Many students used to upload (上传) a picture of the homework to find answers in the apps, which could help them to solve some difficult problems.

Some parents also used the apps to help children with their homework. “It is already challenging for me to solve fifth-grade math questions,” a parent surnamed Lu told online newspaper Sixth Tone. “The Apps can help me to check his homework.” However, not anymore.

On Dec 13, the Ministry of Education said that homework help apps, which allow students to get answers by taking photos and uploading them online, will be removed temporarily (暂时). These apps may make students lazy, affect (影响) their independent thinking and go against the law of education and teaching, the ministry said.

Some online tutoring (辅导) apps may be affected, and they have many users. For example, the Zuoyebang app had more than 100 million users in 2020, according to a report by Xueyan Thinktank. Meanwhile, at the end of 2019, about 8.6 billion searches had been made in the Xiaoyuan Souti app. It solved at least 23.47 million questions each day, reported Global Times.

How badly these apps have influenced younger users! These homework help apps have spoiled (毁掉) many students and they depend on these apps too much. They can’t control themselves to copy the answers in the Apps. As a result, they seem to finish their homework efficiently (有效率地) but actually score poorly in exams.

What is your idea about removing the Apps?

【1】Many people use homework help apps mainly to ________.

A.upload a picture of the homework

B.get the answers to the homework

    C.help finish housework efficiently

D.solve lots of parents’ job trouble

【2】Which of the following might be the possible reason that homework help apps will be removed temporarily?

A.Hundreds of thousands of users in the Zuoycbang app caused a network jam.

B.Quite a few students were spoiled but they finished their homework efficiently.

C.Such apps provide parents with a way to solve math problems for their kids.

D.These apps may affect students’ independent thinking and are against the law.

【3】Why does the winter use some numbers in the fourth paragraph?

A.To show there are so many online tutoring apps.

B.To show there are so many users of online tutoring apps.

C.To show there are so many questions students have.

D.To show there are so many tutors teaching online.

【4】What’s the author’s attitude (态度) towards the removal (删除) of some homework help apps?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Uncaring (不予关注的).

    C.Negative (否定的).

    D.Doubtful.

  • 26、Museums are an important way to exchange different cultures and help people understand each other better. So, have you ever heard of International Museum Day (IMD)?

Every year, ICOM (the International Council of Museums) organises events to celebrate it on May 18. The main objective (目的) of the festival is to make people realise the importance of museums in the development of our society. Here are some facts about it.

Before creating International Museum Day, ICOM brought the international museum community together for a 1951 meeting called Crusade for Museums. They wanted to discuss the theme (主题) “Museums and Education”. Then the idea of International Museum Day was born. In 1977, ICOM decided to celebrate IMD on May 18 every year. Over the years, IMD has gained increasing attention. In 2009, 20,000 museums in over 90 countries took part in the celebration. In 2018, the number jumped to 40,000 in over 150 countries.

Every year, ICOM chooses a theme for the day. This year’s theme is “Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion (多元和包容)”. In China, an online symposium (研讨会) was held at the Nanjing Museum this year. Scholars (学者) from the UK, South Korea and the USA took part in the online event. They discussed the development of the world’s museums.

The best way to celebrate this day is to visit a nearby museum with family and friends. But because of the unusual situation this year, most museums in China held online exhibitions. Chinese people had great fun “visiting” museums online.

  • 27、On a weekend during Spring Festival, my parents and I were sitting in a restaurant. The drinks and food were good, so when we finished, my father left a tip (小费). As we were about to open the door, the waiter caught up with us. He gave the tip back to us. My dad forgot that here is China.

However, in some countries, tipping is the norm. That’s the way it is in the US. It’s said to be good manners to tip your waiter, taxi driver, hairdresser, which can really put your math skills to the test! But we usually give a tip that is 15-20% of the bill.

So why is there a strong custom of tipping? In the US, waiters have a very low income (收入). They depend on tips to pay their bills. As a US writer once wrote about her experience as a waitress, “It was difficult and I lived and died by my tips.”

【1】Where were the parents when the waiter stopped them?

    A.At the table.

    B.At the door.

    C.Outside the restaurant.

    D.Beside the window.

【2】What does the underlined word “norm” mean in Paragraph 2?

    A.Idea.

    B.Custom.

    C.Bill.

    D.Way.

【3】What can be the tip for a $100 bill according to the writer?
