1、阅读下面的短文, 将划线部分译成英文或中文。
The world is not hungry, but it is thirsty.1. It seems strange that nearly3/4 of the earth is covered with water while we say we are short of water. Why? Because about 97% of water on the earth is sea water which we can't drink or use for watering plants directly. Man can only drink and use 3%—the water that comes from rivers and lakes. 2.而且由于有一些水已经被污染, 我们甚至不能全部利用。
Now more water is needed. The problem is:Can we avoid(避免)a serious water shortage later on? Firstly, we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out ways to reuse it. Scientists have always been making studies in the field. 3. Today. in most large cities. water is used only once and then runs to the sea or rivers. But it can be used again.4. Even if every large city reused its water. still it would not be enough. Thirdly, there is a lot of water in the sea. What we should do is to separate the salt from the sea water. This is expensive, but it's already used in many parts of the world.5.科学家们正在尽力找出一个更加便宜的方式来做这件事。So you see, if we can find a way out. we'll be in no danger of drying up.

24、Plastic is one of the biggest polluters in our environment. And Coca-Cola was named the world’s number one plastic polluter in 2020. The Coca-Cola company is finally taking action to deal with this growing problem.
Though plastic is very useful, it is also an “alien” material to Earth, because the soil cannot turn plastic back into CO₂ and water. And this is not the only problem. When plastic finally does degrade(降解), thanks to the sun, it produces greenhouse gas emissions(排放物)and harmful chemicals into the environment, only making the climate(气候)even worse.
The Coca-Cola company is working with a Danish company to create 100% recyclable soda bottles instead of plastic ones.
Creating a paper bottle is challenging. The paper bottle must still follow the same safety standards as the plastic bottles. The carbonated liquid(碳酸液体)in the paper bottle needs to be tested in different environments. Moreover, the paper has to meet the needs of different shapes and sizes for different brands.
The first paper bottle will be tested in Hungary this summer. The bottle is made of a single piece of material instead of separate parts, which would make the bottle weaker. Because paper cannot come into direct contact with the drink, the bottle still includes a(recyclable)plastic inside and cap. However, how to make the paper cap is still unclear yet.
Even if the paper bottles are successful, it will be some time before companies use them instead of plastic that is cheap and easy-to-produce. However, Coca-Cola’s steps are still steps towards a brighter future.

27、 According to a study in Norway, students -who stayed in school longer than others of their age scored higher in intelligence tests.
In the middle of the 1950s, the government began requiring students to attend school until the age of sixteen instead of fourteen. Communities had spent almost twenty years making the change. So some students went to school for seven years while others went for at least nine years. This difference gave researchers the chance to see if the extra schooling had any effect on the development of intelligence.
All young men in Norway must take a test of their cognitive (认知) abilities at the age of nineteen in preparation for required military service (兵役). This is commonly called an IQ test.
The researchers compared the test results of 107,000 young men to their years of schooling. Taryn Ann Galloway,a researcher at the University of Oslo, says, " The young men who were basically forced to stay in school for two years longer actually do have higher IQs. So, based on that, we can say that increasing schooling does actually have an effect on their cognitive abilities."
An average IQ was one hundred. Most people scored between eighty-five and one hundred and fifteen.
Ms. Galloway says that students who attended school for nine years scored seven points higher than those for seven years. Those who went for eight years scored about four points higher.
Experts have debated(争论)for years about the degree to which people are born with intelligence or develop it later. This is the nature or nurture(培养)argument - the influence of biology compared to the environment where people are raised and educated. This study seems to support the nurture side.

A.Increasing schooling can mean high IQ scores.
