24、When you and your family go out for dinner, do you notice how many dishes you usually order? It’s fine if you finish all of them. But if you waste too much food, you might pay a fee for it in the near future.
On Dec 22, China’s top legislature (立法机关) reviewed a draft law (法律草案) for stopping food waste for the first time. In general, a draft will become law after the top legislature reviews (审议) it three times.
According to the draft law, restaurants should tell diners not to order too much. They should describe the size or amount of each dish. If customers leave too much food uneaten, restaurants can charge (收费) them for food waste.
The law also bans (禁止) waiters from encouraging diners to order too much food. Those who don’t follow the law will receive a fine from 1,000 to 10,000 yuan.
The draft law also asks schools to teach their students to avoid food waste. It bans livestreams (直播), radio and TV programs about overeating and overdrinking. Producers (创作者) of such programs will face a fine of up to 100,000 yuan.
Food waste happens in many places. In China alone, 35 million tons of food ends up in landfills (垃圾场) every year. About 12 percent of the nation’s harvest (粮食产量) goes to waste, CCTV News reported.

25、When your town has winter, the earth’s axis(轴) is pointing away from the sun. Your town doesn’t get as much light or heat from the sun. The days are shorter and colder.
Winter and summer happen because the earth is tilted(倾斜) as it revolves around the sun. The northern end of the earth’s axis points towards the sun in summer. You have more hours of light in summer. Your part of the earth is towards the sun for more hours each day. When the part of the earth where you live is towards the sun, you have hotter days. In winter, when your part of the earth points away from the sun, you have colder days.
You have learned about winter and summer. There are two more seasons in the year. One comes after winter and before summer. The other season comes after summer and before winter. Can you name them? That’s right. Spring comes between winter and summer and autumn comes after summer but before winter.
The four seasons are spring, summer, autumn and winter. Spring and autumn are apposite seasons. Which season do you like best?
You have thought about the four seasons of the year. Each season is different. The seasons are made by the northern end of the axis pointing towards or away from the sun.
Your part of the world gets more heat from the sun when the northern end of the axis points to the sun. When the axis points away from the sun, you get less heat. Now you know why winter is colder than summer. The axis is pointing away from the sun in winter. It is pointing towards the sun in summer.

26、Imagine you are walking through the woods and you see a small dog. It looks cute and friendly. You move up to pet the dog. Suddenly it barks and tries to bite you. The dog no longer seems cute and you feel afraid and possibly angry. Then, as the wind blows, the leaves on the ground are carried away and you see the dog has one of its legs caught in a trap. Now, you take pity on the dog. You know it becomes unfriendly because it is in pain.
We all judge (评判) others all the time. It might be over small things, like a workmate who takes too long of a lunch break. Or it might be over bigger matters, such as a person who behaves selfishly or hurts our feelings. There are many reasons why we judge others. It is human nature to find a way to survive. When we see a dog (or a person) that might bite us, of course we feel threatened(威胁). We become nervous, want to fight back and are unable to see the possible reasons for another’s behaviour.
Although judgment is a natural reaction(反应), try to catch yourself before you speak, for you can’t get your words back. Make a short stop. Try to change your thought into a positive(正面的) one. After all, like that dog in the trap, we really don’t know the reasons for someone’s behaviour.
When someone disagrees with us or somehow makes our life difficult, remember that it’s usually not about us. It may be about their pain or struggle (挣扎). Why not give others the right to express their doubts? “Never underestimate the pain of a person,” Will Smith said, “because in all honesty, everyone is struggling. Some people are better at hiding it than others.”

【4】What is the best title of the passage?

27、 Recently children have been told to buy traditional alarm clocks instead of mobile phones to wake them up in the morning. Schools will advise pupils to turn off mobile phones or iPads in the evening to have enough sleep.
