二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In the United States, people often use large amounts of salt to remove dangerous ice from roads and walkways in the winter. But when the spring arrives, all that salt can really damage plants in the garden. Salt is the chemical sodium chloride.

Salt pulls water from living cells, like plant roots and the healthy ground soil around them. So, spring growth may show up lighter in color than normal, or, in the worst cases, plants may simply die. Rain can wash away much of the salt, permitting some older plants to live. Salt can also be removed by pouring a large amount of water on the ground where plants are growing. But the best action is to simply use less salt.

There are, of course, other things that can be used to cover for sodium chloride. One is the chemical calcium chloride, which does less damage to plants and melts ice faster than salt. It also works when the temperature is below negative 17 degrees Celsius. Salt loses some of its effectiveness at temperatures below negative 12 degrees.

Still, calcium chloride does put chloride ion (氯离子), which plants don’t like, into the soil. It is also more expensive and can do more damage to cars. Calcium magnesium acetate, also called CMA, has become a popular alternative. It is made by combining limestone, a type of rock, and vinegar. It breaks down naturally so it does not damage plants or soil. It stays on roads and does not hurt cars.

CMA does have problems, however. It is most effective at around negative 9 Celsius, just like salt. And it is better at stopping ice from forming rather than removing it. So, it is best placed on a road before the temperature gets very cold. Some materials other than salt—such as sand or very small pieces of wood—can also work against ice. But they can be very messy.

【1】What is the poor result by using salt to remove ice?

A.All the plants are likely to disappear overnight.

B.The plants may well look much weaker than ever.

C.Some older plants can’t resist being washed away.

D.A large amount of water is trapped on the roads.

【2】What does the underlined part mean in the 3rd paragraph?

    A.Remove.

    B.Wrap.

    C.Collect.

    D.Replace.

【3】What is the advantage of calcium chloride?

A.It functions well at cold temperatures.

B.It provides chloride ion to the soil.

C.It can melt ice just above minus 17℃.

D.It brings no damage to plants or soil.

    【4】The author wants to show

A.many materials can be used to remove ice.

B.using less salt is beneficial to your plants.

C.sand and pieces of wood are eco-friendly.

D.too much salt is used on the roads in the USA.

  • 22、Scientific reports show the destructive effects of climate change, but many scientists say it is important to remain positive. If the world continues to change, don’t give up, and we can still prevent some of the worst effects of climate change.

Recently, however, many scientists are dealing with the feeling of doom about climate change or “doomism.” Jacquelyn Gill is a climate scientist at the University of Maine. She says that around 2018 she noticed an increase in these “doomers,” or people who think that saving the earth is hopeless. They refuse to change their behavior or consider how they can work to prevent climate change.

The United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently published its third report. This report explained the damage caused by the burning of traditional fuels, like oil and coal. New investments in traditional fuels and removal of forests for farming are preventing the world from helping stop climate change.

Anderson is the Environment Program Director for the United Nations. She says officials are trying to get people to take action because there is a climate crisis. Their goal is not to scare people into doing nothing.

“We are not doomed, but rapid action is absolutely essential. With every month or year that we delay action, climate change becomes more complex, expensive and difficult to overcome,” Andersen said.

The UN IPCC report stated that without fast and extreme measures to cut carbon pollution, the world is not likely to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The global temperature has already increased by 1.1 degrees Celsius. After 1.5 degrees, climate change will quickly worsen causing environment to be in danger. It will cause an increase in weather disasters.

James Skea is a leader from the UN IPCC Report. “We don’t fall over the cliff at 1.5 degrees. Even if we were to go beyond 1.5, it doesn’t mean we throw up our hands in despair,” Skea said.

Michael Mann is a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University. He says that scientists used to think Earth would continue to warm decades after we balance emissions. Balancing emissions to net zero means not creating more carbon in the atmosphere than oceans and forests can remove. New research suggests that it will only take a few years to decrease carbon levels in the air after we balance emissions.

【1】What is the writer’s attitude towards climate change?

    A.Optimistic.

    B.Pessimistic.

    C.Cautious.

    D.Objective.

【2】According to the passage, which is mentioned in the third report by UN IPCC?

    A.The change of people’s behaviors.

B.The damage caused by human activities.

C.The sharp increase in number of doomers.

D.The measures to help stop climate change.

【3】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.The significance of UNIPCC third report.

B.The difficulties of decreasing carbon levels.

C.Scientists’ optimistic attitude towards climate change.

D.The need to take immediate actions against climate change.

  • 23、   Feeding bread to the ducks is a fond pastime for many of us, reminding us of our happy childhood trips to the local park. But did you know that bread actually poses a danger to birds, as well as the environment? Eating it can cause our feathered friends to develop a condition called Angel Wing, which is when too much bread makes birds’ feathers grow too quickly. This additional weight puts a strain on their muscles, causing their wings to twist and drop open, and if not treated fast, they can lose the ability to fly.

“Angel Wing can be remedied if we reach birds before it has developed too severely,” says Caroline Simpson, a trustee of UK charity Swan Lifeline, which has rescued and treated more than 30,000 birds over the last 20 years. “Otherwise the consequence can be awfulsuch as amputations(截肢)of the wing.” Adult swans can also develop gut and heart disease, so it’s important we do our bit to prevent this by feeding wild birds with the right kind of food.

Bread can also cause harmful changes to the natural ecosystem. Rotting bread at the bottom of  rivers and lakes allows bacteria to breed, spreading disease and attracting rats and other vermin to our waterways. It can result in algal(藻类的)blooms and the presence of a mould(霉菌)called Aspergillus too, which has the potential to kill waterfowl(水禽)and other wildlife if it gets into their lungs.

But this doesn’t mean we have to stop fun trips to feed the ducks. Giving birds the right food-like frozen peas, sweetcorn and lettuce leaves-is good for both them and the environment. So, next time  you visit your local park, take a healthier alternative with you and do your bit to protect our precious wildlife.

1The underlined word “remedied” in Paragraph 2 probably means  .

    A.reduced B.expected C.caused D.corrected

2Which of the following is NOT a consequence of feeding waterfowl with bread?

A.Harmful creatures will be drawn to waterways.

B.Water birds will be overfed and risk losing their bodily functions.

C.The water will be enriched thanks to the nutrients in bread.

D.The eco-balance at the bottom of rivers or lakes will be disturbed.

3The purpose of writing this passage is to  .

    A.stop people from feeding waterfowl.

B.instruct people how to raise waterfowl.

C.warn people of the danger threatening waterfowl.

D.promote a safe and healthy way to feed waterfowl.

  • 24、As a financial adviser, my clients come to me seeking help with growing their wealth. Perhaps the greatest lesson I share is that being rich isn’t a dollar amount; it is a perception that includes happiness, peace of mind, comfort and security. There’s a big difference between being wealthy and feeling wealthy.

Actually, one of the best ways I advise others in building their wealth is this: The secret to having more is giving more. Studies have shown that people who volunteer weekly exhibit an increase in happiness. Donating your time makes you grateful for all that you have, and you’ll have the unmatched joy and excitement of knowing you made a huge impact for the good of others.

Volunteering enables you to increase your relationship skills and encourages you to have conversations with people from very different walks of life. You can even make new friends. It is also a wonderful activity that families can do together. This has the added benefit of serving as a good role model to your children. I am encouraging my kids to volunteer and experience the power of love for themselves.

Without fail, every time I volunteer, I have conversations that change my life in some way. I was once volunteering at a local shelter and struck up a conversation with other volunteers. As we chatted, we all suddenly realized: The massive gratitude of those receiving help acted like a nuclear bomb going off in our hearts, and it also touched the other volunteers, making us all realize how truly blessed we are.

Giving our time, money and energy gives us a sense of achievement like nothing else. If “wealth” really is a perception of happiness, comfort and security, we must learn to get outside our own experience and understand what wealth means to other people.

【1】What is the author’s understanding of wealth?

A.It is more of a state of mind.

B.It gives one the duty to help others.

C.It has something to do with finance.

D.It lifts people’s spirits like nothing else.

【2】What makes a person appreciate what he has already owned?

    A.Winning people’s recognition.

    B.Spending time helping others.

C.Making a deep impression on others.

    D.Improving one’s interpersonal skills.

【3】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.Benefits of volunteering.

    B.Parents’ roles in a family.

    C.Importance of social skills.

    D.Ways of being a volunteer.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.A Road to Real Wealth in Life

    B.A Lesson in Wealth Management

C.A Different Way to Pursue Happiness

    D.A Life-changing Volunteering Experience
