  • 26、Find it hard to get started? Try these suggestions to help you rise and shine — and be effective from morning till night.

    Get up earlier

Sleeping in can be a hard habit to break. 【1】 That is, you need to go to bed earlier and get up earlier. Start off by going to bed 15 minutes before your usual turn-in time and setting your alarm the same number of minutes earlier the next day. Gradually reset your sleep cycle until you get to your desired wake-up time.

Have a good stretch in bed

Before you even open your eyes, stretch every extremity for 15 seconds. Lift your arm and begin by stretching each fingers, next your hand, and then your arm. 【2】 End with a neck and back stretch that gets you out of bed. By doing this, you will increase the flow of blood through your system, providing your tissues with extra oxygen.

    【3】

The fewer choices you have to make first thing, the better. Before going to bed, decide what you’re going to wear, work out which route you’ll take to work and pack your bag.

    Check your morning calendar

Hang a large whiteboard in your kitchen. On it, write down all you need to know for that particular day, from doctor appointments to what you’re doing with your friends. Check it carefully while you sip your first cup of coffee or tea. 【4】

    Get moving

【5】 But if you can get yourself into the habit, exercising in the morning can give you energy to jump-start your day.

    A.Spend less time when packing.

    B.Actually it involves two things.

C.Move on to your toes, feet and legs.

D.It will help you to structure your day.

E.Set your clothes out the night before.

F.Morning exercise can get you refreshed quickly.

G.If you’re a night owl, jogging early might sound like punishment.

  • 27、While family fun is often connected with new and exciting activities, family leisure (休闲) spent at home may be a better way to find happiness, according to a study. “That may be because when the brain is focused on new information, such as taking part in an unfamiliar activity with unfamiliar people in a new location, less ‘brain power’ is left to focus on the family relationships,” said lead author Karen Melton.

While research results suggest that all quality time together helps to lead to satisfaction with family life, “all family leisure is not equal,” she said. “The best predictor (预示物) of happiness for families may be spending quality time together in familiar activities inside the home. And that’s great news for families who have little time or few resources.”

For the study, researchers followed 1, 502 people in 884 families in the United Kingdom. Each family taking part in the online research had at least one child between the ages of 11 and 15. They answered questions about whether they took part in family leisure in the past year and if so, what activities (from 16 types) they did, how much time they spent doing them and how frequently they did so.

The study showed that the expression “The family that plays together stays together!” is not always true. “Family members can also express stress and anger as well as pleasure during leisure time.” Melton said. “The activities alone will not heal the wounds of hurting families.”

Melton noted that some studies support the idea that eating together is one of the best predictors of happiness for families, while watching TV is seen as less helpful for people’s happiness. But families should question one-size-fits-all ideas. “For some families, quality togetherness is having dinner together or playing games; for others, it may be hobbies, videos, TV or music,” Melton said. “At the end of the day, what matters is that we are social beings who want to belong to a group and have close relationships.”

【1】According to the study, which activity may bring the most happiness to a family?

    A.Watching a movie at home.

    B.Traveling to another city.

    C.Climbing a mountain with strangers.

D.Attending a community event with neighbors.

【2】What do Karen Melton’s words in Paragraph 4 suggest?

A.Family members always argue with each other.

B.Family members sometimes need some time alone.

C.Family leisure makes it hard to share your true feelings.

D.Family leisure can include sharing positive and negative feelings.

【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Happy families often take part in creative activities.

B.It is important that family members have common interests.

C.Different families have different ways to spend quality time.

D.It is hard for some families to find the perfect family leisure.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.Family leisure can do good to your health.

B.Fun at home makes your family happier.

C.How to organize good family activities at home?

D.Why should we spend more time with loved ones?

  • 28、Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it's not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who were the true winners of a game.

Some people like the action of cheating mainly because it makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the knowledge and it won’t help on the next test—unless the person cheats again.

People lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.

Some kids cheat because they’re lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating. Even when there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.

If you were sick or upset about something the night before and couldn’t study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don't have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school.

A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teachers and parents so they can find some solutions together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.

【1】The author thinks that when kids cheat in class ________.

A.it is unfair to other people

B.it does harm to their health

    C.teachers should laugh at them

D.teachers shouldn't stop them at once

【2】Some people like cheating mainly because ________.

A.the knowledge in the test is very difficult

B.they want to do better than the others

C.cheating can make hard things seem very easy

D.they have little time to study their lessons

【3】The fourth paragraph mainly tells us ________.

    A.cheating is popular among students

B.why kids cheat in the test

C.some kids can't pass the test without cheating

D.some kids don't spend the time studying

【4】In the passage those cheaters are advised to ________.

A.spend more time on school than on sports

B.find good solutions instead of cheating

    C.try hard to become clever

    D.ask their classmates for help

  • 29、Guns have a special place in American culture, and though not everyone agrees on whether or not they are a good thing, there is no mistaking that they will be part of the cultural landscape for some time. To answer the question, no, not everyone has a gun. 【1】

Americans use guns for one of two uses: either for sport, where they can use them on firing ranges or for hunting in approved areas, or for self-protection. The latter is where most people begin to take sides, either arguing for the removal of guns from society or allowing more people to have them. There are organizations and community groups for both sides and both sides have strong feelings.

Legally, there are restrictions on gun owners. 【2】 Only certain kinds of weapons can be purchased by the public, and that excludes automatic weapon and military grade weaponry. Gun owners must transport their weapon in a safe way, unloaded and in most cases, out of sight. Special—concealed carry permits from the police station must be obtained for people who want to wear weapon, and most people are rejected for this kind of permit. 【3】 Criminals steal guns or buy them illegally to commit crimes, and the news is full of terrible stories of what happened next. Occasionally a child will get a hold of legal weapon and accidentally hurt themselves or others.

It is important to remember, however, that the news stories that make the United States seem like a dangerous place are deceiving; guns are not everywhere or constant. 【4】 After all, America is a safe place to live.

A.You are only allowed to purchase a firearm if you have had a background check and meet certain legal requirements.

B.There have been many enlightening articles on gun control in America.

C.If you were to visit the United States for two months the only gun you might see is in a museum or on a police officer.

D.Less than fifty percent of homes in the United States own weapons, and many of those homes are in rural areas where guns may have a greater use.

E.More people are deciding to legalize their gun transactions instead of buying them on the black market.

F.What alarms people the most about American gun culture are the illegal guns and shooting, which make some places feel unsafe.

  • 31、

If you can’t seem to catch enough Z’s during the week, you’re not alone. But bad things happen to your body when you’re sleep-deprived, not least of which is weight gain. Well, here’s some good news: Sleeping in on the weekend to make up for sleep lost during the week is 1 with lower body mass index (BMI), according to a study published in the Oxford University Press journal Sleep.

The researchers, a collaboration of scientists based in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Republic of Korean, sought to determine if what they refer to as “catch-up sleep”2 body mass index (BMI) in the general population. To do so, they conducted face-to-face interviews of a random sampling of 2,156 adults, comparing their sleep habits with their BMI scores. The 932 participants who slept in – “catch-up sleepers” (people who sleep longer on the weekend than on weekdays by approximately two hours) had a(n)3lower BMI than the other subjects. What’s more, every additional hour of catch-up sleep was linked with a decrease in BMI.

As to why sleeping in on weekends can lead to weight loss, one of the study co-authors, Robert Thomas, MD, MMSc, of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston,4 Reader’s Digest of the “substantial(大量的) experimental and epidemiological(流行病学的) data that short sleep contributes to weight gain.” He notes, “our best 5as researchers are that there are balances to be kept, and the body can adjust and 6 within reason. Catch-up sleep allows the basic balance to be maintained.”

Although the study showed significant differences in BMI with the 7of two or more hours of catch-up sleep, Dr. Thomas points out that there are “substantial individual differences,” such that the benefit we get from those extra hours will vary 8 on how much sleep each of us generally needs. “To determine your optional sleep, you can track the time spent sleeping on nights when there is no need to wake up to an alarm,” suggests Liza Baker, a health coach at Simply Health Coaching. That tells you about how many hours of sleep your body likes to get, since it 9greatly across the population, from just 4 to 5 hours to 9 to 10 hours.

So can you actually lost weight by sleeping in on the weekend? Only if you’re paying off a sleep 10from the week, according to the result of this study. It helps if you’re also eating less, Dr. Thomas adds.

  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The concept of comfort zone (舒适区) refers to a psychological state in which we feel safe and do not experience anxiety or fear. It is a “space” that we know completely and in which we control almost everything.

Your comfort zone represents things you’re familiar with, your regular haunts, friends you’re at ease with, and activities you love doing. Your comfort zone’s risk free. It’s easy. It doesn’t cause you to stretch. Within these boundaries we feel safe and secure.

During my senior year in college I was short a few credits, and so I skimmed through the class schedule looking for something to fill the hours. When I came across “Private Voice Instruction” as in singing lessons, I thought, “Why not step outside my comfort zone and give it a try?”

I was careful to sign up for private lessons instead of group lessons because I didn’t want to make a fool of myself by singing in front of other students.

Things went fine until the end of the semester when my singing professor brought the shocking news. “By the way, Sean, have you decided which song you want to sing at the recital?” “What do you mean?” I asked in horror.

“Well, the class requirements state that you have to sing at least one time in front of the other private voice students.”

“That would not be a good idea,” I said emphatically.

“Oh, it’s no big deal. You’ll do fine.”

Well, to me it was a huge deal. The thought of singing in front of a group made me physically sick. “How am I going to get out of this one?” I thought. But I couldn’t allow myself to do that because I had been speaking to various groups over the past year advising them to never let fears make their decisions.

“Courage, Sean.” I kept saying in my mind. “You’ve got to at least try.”
