21、Sometime in the next century, the familiar early-newspaper on the front porch (门廊) will disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper, it will read to you. You'll get up and turn on the computer newspaper just like switching on the TV. An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You'll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Do you want more information on this brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer if you like. These are among the predictions from communication experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader home-based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers will unite print and broadcast reporting, and offer news and analysis with video images of news events.
Most of the technology is available now, but convincing more people that they don't need to read a newspaper is the next step. But resistance to computer newspapers may be stronger from within journalism. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generation of journalists and publishers will have to die off before the next generation realizes that the newspaper industry is no longer a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of ' traditional newspapers unavoidable.
Despite technological advances, it could take decades to replace newsprint with computer screens. It might take 30 to 40 years to complete the changeover because people need to buy computers and because newspapers have established financial interests in the paper industry.
【1】Which of the following is NOT an advantage of computer newspapers?
A. They are cheaper than traditional newspapers.
B. They are more convenient to read.
C. You can choose the kind of voice you want to hear.
D. You can easily save information for future use.
【2】Which of the following is a reason why it will take a long time to complete the changeover?
A. The technology is impossible now.
B. Computer newspaper s are too expensive.
C . The popularization of computers needs a long time.
D. Traditional newspapers are easier to read.
【3】It can be inferred that journalists are against computer newspapers because ____ .
A.they don't know how to use computers
B. they think computer newspapers take too much time to read
C. they think the new technology is bad
D. they have been trained to write for traditional newspapers
【4】We can infer from the passage that .
A. all technological changes are good
B. new technologies don't always replace old ones
C. new technologies will eventually replace old ones
D. traditional newspapers are here to stay for another century
【5】What is the best title of the passage?
A. Computer newspapers are well liked.
B. Newspapers of the future will be on the computer.
C. Newspapers are out of fashion.
D. New communications technology.
22、Smith, Williams, Brown are common surnames that you will meet in Britain. However, you may come across some strange English surnames. The following surnames are rare, but they are real.
GotobedYou are not going to meet many people with the surname “Go-to-bed”. The first recorded person to have this surname was John Gotobedde of Cambridge in 1269. Professor Reaney, an authority on English surnames, explains the surname originated from people who had a bed, which was rare back in the 12th century. People were proud that they could afford to have a bed, thus adding it to their name. Strange but true!
Onions
This surname, which was first popular in France and Ireland before coming over to the UK, dates back to l279 and identified(显示)a person’s job. He was either a seller or a grower of the vegetable.
Nutter
Nutter means a crazy or silly person in spoken English. You wouldn’t usually call yourself a nutter, but it’s genuinely a surname that originates from Yorkshire and Lancashire. It’s a variation of the old English surnames “Notere”, which means a clerk, and “Nothard”, which means a person that keeps oxen.
Hardmeat
You might have guessed that “Hardmeat” must have something to do with a family of butchers. In fact, it might just have been a misspelling of the village that the name came from, which was “Hardmead” in England. Wish they had a spellchecker back then!
【1】Which of the following surnames can tell a family’s wealth?
A.Nutter.
B.Onions.
C.Gotobed.
D.Hardmeat.
【2】What do Onions and Nutter have in common?

23、Summer Rain
The worst days of any summer are the rainy ones. We spend all year looking forward to nice weather and long, hot days. All of winter, with its cloudy days and bitter cold, we dream of those endless days at the beach, lying on the sand and enjoying the bright and burning sun. And then, summer comes, and it rains.
As a child, I would wake up to rainy summer days and come close to crying. It wasn’t fair. We suffered through months of school and experienced bad weather for those short ten weeks of freedom and pleasant weather.
On those rainy summer days, I had nothing fun to do and could only sit inside, staring out at the rain like a bird in a cage. I was an only child, so there was no one else to play with. My father worked from home, so I was not truly alone, but he could not actively play with me since he was at work. It was those days that I would watch whatever was on television or read any books that I could find lying around. I’d drag through the day and pray each night that the rain would not be there the next day.
As an adult, though, my opinion of summer rain has changed. When you have to work every day, summer is not as exciting. Everything seems dull. Such a mindset makes you cheer for anything new or different. I spend the winter dreaming of summer and the summer dreaming of winter. When summer comes, I hate how hot it is. And then I look forward to the rain, because the rain brings with it a cold front, which makes me comfortable. Rainy days are still the worst days of the summer, but summer rain today means positively beautiful—and considerably cooler—weather tomorrow.
【1】When the author was a child, he ______.
A. hated rainy days
B. liked staying indoors
C. preferred cooler weather
D. dreamed on summer days
【2】We can learn from the passage that the author ______.
A. had no brothers or sisters
B. was often left alone at home
C. could enjoy the brilliant sun in winter
D. preferred reading to playing outside
【3】As an adult, the author views summer rain differently because ______.
A. he knows it won’t last long
B. rain makes the weather cooler
C. his summer holiday is very short
D. he can better deal with his downtime
24、Typical commercial white paints reflect only 80% to 90% of sunlight and fail to help buildings stay cool during the day. For the past six years, mechanical engineer Xiulin Ruan at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and his colleagues sought to create whiter paints to cool buildings without the need of electricity. They explored more than 100 materials, narrowing them down to 10 and testing roughly 50 different combinations of each material.
The one that performed best is based on barium sulfate(硫酸钡), something used to whiten photo paper and makeup. It is highly reflective to solar wavelengths of light. The scientists made sure the paint had a high concentration of barium sulfate particles(颗粒) of many different sizes. The wavelength of light each particle scatters depends on its size, so a wide range of particle sizes helps the paint reflect more light from the sun.
Outdoor tests of the new paint revealed it was the coolest on record, keeping surfaces 19 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than their surrounding surfaces at night, and 8 degrees cooler than surroundings under strong noon sunlight. It even worked in the middle of winter — when the temperature was 43 degrees F, it still managed to lower temperatures by 18 degrees Fahrenheit.
The scientists estimate that if 1,000 square feet of roof were covered with this paint, it would provide a cooling power of 10 kilowatts, more powerful than the central air conditioners used by most houses. The scientists noted they could likely make the paint even whiter by increasing the particle concentration, although too high a concentration would make the paint easier to peel off. Ruan said, “ painting 0.5% to 1% of the Earth’s surface with their paint, for example by coating roofs, roads, unused land and so on, might even help stop global warming.” He added, “Barium sulfate is common and environmentally safe, and powders of it are roughly half the cost of those often used in commercial white paints.”
In the future, the researchers want to optimize and commercialize their paint for a wide range of applications, including buildings, automobiles and outdoor equipment. They would also like to develop colored versions.
【1】Which is one of the features of barium sulfate?
A.It can only reflect 80% to 90% of sunlight.
B.It’s used to make photo paper and makeup whiter.
C.It helps the paint reflect less light from the sun.
D.It is reflective to all the wavelengths of the light.
【2】What does the underlined word “scatters” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.absorbs
B.reflects
C.breaks
D.concentrates
【3】What will happen if the particle concentration is too high?
A.The paint will be easier to fall off.
B.The paint will take in more sunlight.
C.It can make the paint less whiter.
D.It will change the wavelength of the light.
【4】What’s the passage mainly about?
A.Barium sulfate is used in white paints.
B.Some engineers created white paints.
C.White paints can stop global warming.
D.Whiter paint can cool buildings.

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
One year, a newspaper of the United States published an announcement that the horticultural institute offered a reward at a high price for the pure white marigold (金盏花). The high reward attracted so many people, but in nature besides golden, the marigold is brown, and it is not easy to grow the white one. So after they were excited for a time, many people had forgotten the announcement.
Years flew away. One normal day after 20 years, the horticultural institute that had published the announcement accidentally received a letter and 100 seeds of pure white marigold. On that day the news spread like wildfire.
It turned out to be an old woman of over 70 years old. The institute had always been hesitating over the fact that the letter said with certainty that the seeds could bloom pure white marigold, and the need for verification (验证) became the focus of the debate. Whether they would make an experimental verification or not became the controversial focus at one time.
Some said you would never live up to the old man’s wish. Those seeds finally took root in the earth. The miracle appeared after one year: large patches of pure white marigold waved in the breeze.
Accordingly, the old woman who was always unknown to the public became a new focus.
Originally, the old woman was a flower lover. When she occasionally read the announcement in the newspaper 20 years ago, she was eager to try. But her eight children strongly opposed her decision. After all, a woman who never knew the seed genetics (遗传学) couldn’t complete what the experts could never achieve, so her thought seemed very foolish.
