  • 22、Thanks to modern transportation (交通工具) such as planes and trains, you can get things from different parts of China. You can travel far and fast. But what was life like in ancient (古代的) times without modern transportation? About 2, 500 years ago, Chinese people used the Grand Canal (大运河) to travel and carry things.

The Grand Canal is a man-made waterway in China. During the Spring and Autumn Period (770BC—476 BC), people started to build a canal in today’s Jiangsu Province. During the Sui Dynasty (581 AD—618 AD), it became part of the Grand Canal. Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty wanted to carry rice easily from the south to his capital city in Luoyang. He forced millions of farmers to build the Canal. It took over six years of hard work. Many of them died when building the Canal. However, when the Canal was finally completed in 609 AD, China had a new waterway, it is the Grand Canal. It starts in the southwest of Beijing and ends in the city of Hangzhou. It runs through 18 cities and finally runs into the Qiantang River. So the Canal is also called Jing Hang Grand Canal. With the canal, people in ancient China carried things more easily than by using horses and cows or traveling on foot.

It is about 1,790 kilometers long now. It’s the second “gold waterway” only followed by the Yangtze River. People often compare its value (价值) to that of the Great Wall. It’s one of the three greatest projects, the other two are the Great Wall, the Kan’er Well (井). It is the oldest and longest man-made waterway in the world. It’s 10 times as long as the Suez Canal and 21 times longer the Panama Canal. Today, half of the canal, such as the parts in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, is used all year around and is still having an influence on (影响) our life. To remember the canal, the United Nations issued (发行) a stamp of it on 25th August, 2021 so that more people learn about the great waterway of China. In 2014, it got onto the World Heritage List (《世界遗产名录》).
