21、Forget expensive gym memberships — you don’t need to spend a fortune to exercise. From the best free classes and apps to outdoor gyms, here is how to work out at a minimal(最低的) cost.
In-store exercise classes
In the same way as bookshops double up as coffee shops, activewear shops have learned to multitask as gyms. Outlets from Sweaty Betty(which has branches throughout the UK) to Asics and Nike offer free running clubs: check out their websites to sign up online. 【1】, and some classes are heavily in demand.
Run
I gave up the gym five years ago when I faced the fact that my monthly visit was costing me £80. With the first £80 saved I bought some discounted running shoes. 【2】.
Good Gym
【3】, then Good Gym could supply motivation while doubling the feel good factor. It connects local runners with a range of necessary good deeds from gardening to changing a lightbulb. Some jobs require two runners, others two dozen. The idea is you run to the mission, do the deed, then run back, thereby combining altruism(利他主义), fitness and socializing in one rewarding act.
【4】
You might be surprised to discover how many cheap fitness options lie within a short walk of your doorstep. Many local authorities offer fitness initiatives. Mine (Hackney, in east London) organizes £1 exercise classes from family taekwondo(跆拳道) to chair-based yoga. 【5】. Check your local council’s website. They are also likely to run tennis courts.

22、Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. 【1】 It may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment.
Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity from which men get their relaxation.
Mountaineering is a sport but not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. 【2】
If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. 【3】 There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams" of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. 【4】 His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve skills year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. 【5】 They may need more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.
A.We should be mistaken in this.
B.He has to fight the forces of nature.
C.Teams compete against each other.
D.Climbing high mountains needs patience, skills and strength.
E.Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
F.It may be a game of some kind football, hockey, golf, or tennis.
G.But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps.
23、 The news one day reached Gabriel that Bathsheba had left the neighborhood. Her abrupt departure is more emphatic than her verbal refusal of his offer. It may have been observed that there is no regular path for getting out of love as there is for getting in. All that Gabriel learnt of Bathsheba’s movements was done indirectly. It appeared that she had gone to a place called Weatherbury, which, whether as a visitor or permanently, he could not discover.
Gabriel had two dogs. George, the elder, had originally belonged to a shepherd (牧羊人) of inferior morals and dreadful temper. Long experience had so precisely taught the animal the difference between different orders. Though old, he was clever and trustworthy still. The young dog, George’s son, might possibly have been the image of his mother, for there was not much resemblance between him and George. He was learning the sheep-keeping business. So earnest and yet so wrongheaded was this young dog that if sent behind he did it so thoroughly that he would have chased them across the whole country with the greatest pleasure if not called off.
One night, when Gabriel had returned to his house, he called as usual to the dogs, previously shutting them up in the outhouse till next morning. Only one responded—old George; the other could not be found. ① Gabriel then concluded that the young one had not finished his meal, and he went indoors to the luxury of a bed.
It was a still and wet night. Just before dawn he was woken by the abnormal reverberation of familiar music. To the shepherd, the note of the sheep-bell is beating with unusual violence and rapidity. The experienced ear of Gabriel knew the sound was caused by the running of the flock with great speed. ② He jumped out of bed and ascended the hill. These two hundred ewes(female sheep) seemed to have absolutely vanished from the hill. Gabriel called at the top of his voice:
‘Ovey, ovey, ovey!’
He called again: the valleys and furthest hills resounded but no sheep. He passed through the trees and along the ridge of the hill. ③ He advanced: at one point the rails were broken through, and there he saw the footprints of his ewes. The dog came up, licked his hand, and made signs implying that he expected some great reward. Gabriel looked over the side of the mountain. The ewes lay dead—a pile of two hundred dead bodies.
As far as could be learnt, it appeared that the poor young dog, still under the impression that since he was kept for funning after sheep, the more he ran after them the better, had at the end of his meal off the dead lamb, which may have given him additional energy and spirits, collected all the ewes into a corner and driven the timid creatures through the hedge, breaking down a portion of the rotten railing. ④
Gabriel was an intensely humane man; his first feeling now was one of pity for the untimely fate of these gentle ewes and their unborn lambs. It was a second to remember another stage of the matter. All the savings had been gone at a blow; his hopes of being an independent farmer were laid low. Gabriel’s energies, patience, and industry had been so severely taxed during the years of his life, to reach his present stage of progress, that no more seemed to be left in him. He leant down upon a rail, covered his face with his hands and uttered in thankfulness:
“Thank God I am not married: what would she have done in the poverty now coming upon me!”
Gabriel found that the value of remaining lambs, plant, and implements which were really his own would be about sufficient to pay his debts, leaving himself a free man with the clothes he stood up in, and nothing more. Two months later, Gabriel was discovered at the hiring fair in Casterbridge. Though he was not hired, he earned a few pennies at the hiring fair and learned that another fair would be held at Shottsford, 10 miles beyond Weatherbury.

24、Anger is a natural feeling that everyone experiences in life. Some researchers believe the first sound a baby makes when born could be a sign of anger. Anger may be the first feeling we have and respond to. It’s in many cases a perfectly healthy feeling. Anger can cause people to make very positive changes in their lives. Sometimes we have to be angry at injustice (不公正), at wrong doings, or even at nature, before we can do what needs to be done to correct wrongs or make things better. But of course, that is not how we usually think of anger.
Most people think of anger as a feeling we must keep under control. Children are sometimes sent to their rooms or punished for expressing anger in an uncontrolled way. Parents tell a child to control himself when the child shows anger. We may be angry with friends or at work, but we know it’s not right to show it. Very early in life, we learn that anger is something that must be controlled.
We learn this for a good reason. Uncontrolled anger can lead to fights, car accidents, bad relationships with others, unacceptable social behavior, and many other problems. However, many experts say that if one suppresses his anger, he may suffer serious mental and physical health problems. So what can we do to understand and calm this feeling?
One solution is to talk about it with someone we trust, for example, a good friend. We can also try to walk away from a situation that causes anger, ask a doctor for advice, or just exercise more in our daily life. And of course we may have many other methods. Whatever solution we choose, as long as we are trying to find the solution to the problem, we have already taken the first step in the right direction.
