  • 21、Healthy Habits for a Healthy Life

There's no doubt that most of us want to live long, happy, successful and healthy lives. Unfortunately, we often take shortcuts with our health and end up with various disabilities that could be avoided. 【1】. Here are some healthy habits that anyone should be able to include in their daily lives.

    Get your exercise

Regular exercise is probably the closest we can get to a fountain of youth. Many exercise authorities suggest 30 minutes of exercise, 5—6 days a week, giving your body one day to rest. The exercise doesn't have to be an iron-man type experience. 【2】.

    Always eat breakfast

Research shows that people who have breakfast tend to take in more vitamins (维生素) and minerals. Eating things that are high in fiber and proteins keeps you feeling full and energized. These include corn, breads, low-fat milk, fruit, and so on.

    【3】

Getting the proper amount of water is extremely important as every cell, tissue and organ in our bodies needs water. Many devices, from “smart bottles” to a lot of free apps, are readily accessible to keep you properly drinking.

    Don’t ignore flossing (牙线洁牙)

Some studies indicate that flossing regularly could add over 6 years to your life. Why? The theory is that the bacteria enter the bloodstream and do harm to your heart. 【4】.

    Get your sleep

One recent study from Italy suggests that the consistent lack of sleep may cause the brain to start destroying itself. To avoid this potential threat, develop the habit of getting a solid 7—9 hours of sleep. 【5】.

Actually, the list of healthy habits is endless. Find the healthy habits that work for you and stick with them!

    A.Drink enough water

B.It doesn't have to be that way at all

C.Give your brain some genuine downtime

D.Practice healthy eating throughout the day

E.So, get in the habit of giving your teeth a good bedtime cleaning

F.This habit doesn't include avoiding sugary drinks and snacks

G.Something as simple as a quick 30-minute walk can work wonders for your health

The annual event features traditional dancing, retailers selling native crafts and food, and a blessing of the grounds.

    Petroglyph National Monument

One of the largest petroglyph ( 岩刻 ) sites in North America is on a cliff overlooking the suburbs of Albuquerque, New Mexico. • 23、The Age of Unreason

    Charles Handy

In his book The Age of Unreason Professor Handy describes the dramatic changes that are taking place in our lives today and warns that we must adapt to these changes if we want to survive in the future.

Handy believes that in the future less than 50% of the workforce will be employed full-time by an organization. These full-time employees will be the qualified professionals, technicians, and managers who are essential to an organization. Their working lives will be a lot more demanding than today, but in return they will be well-paid and they will retire earlier. The rest of the workforce will be self-employed or will work part-time, providing organizations with the products and services they require on a contract basis. Handy forecasts a big increase in the number of working mothers in the future and believes there will be a large number of unemployed.

Handy gives us plenty of figures to worry about. He estimates that by the year 2040, one person in five will retire, and one in ten will be over seventy-five years old. There will be one retiree to every three people of working age, and even more than that in countries such as Germany and Switzerland, where the proportion will be as much as one to two. Retirees will remain healthy and active for longer than they do today and many will live to be a hundred years old, a fact which leads Handy to suggest that the term retirement will no longer be appropriate. He suggests the third age is a more appropriate description, since it will be as important a part of our lives as the first age of learning and the second age of working are for us today.

【1】Professor Handy wrote the book most probably to .

    A. warn us of potential social problems in the future

    B. predict the leading professions in the coming years

    C. describe the effect of unemployment on society

    D. suggest a better term for future retirement

【2】According to Professor Handy, the future workforce will .

    A. adapt to the changes in retirement easily

    B. be mainly self-employed

    C. have fewer full-time workers than today

    D. work on a contract basis

【3】From the last paragraph, we learn that about 30 years from now, .

    A. the number of retirees will double in many countries

    B. ageing will be a common and serious problem

    C. 10% of the population will live to be 100 years old

    D. the third age will be the most important part of our lives

  • 24、   The COVID-19 illness causes mild or moderate symptoms for most but severe symptoms are more likely in the elderly or people with existing health problems. Most infected patients have recovered from it so far.

The leader of the IOCS coordination commission for the Tokyo Olympics says there is no May deadline to cancel the games and he remains confident the event will go ahead despite sports coming to a stop globally amid the coronavirus epidemic. John Coates, who will have to go into government-mandated self-isolation when he returns to Australia this week from Olympic business in Europe, told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper: “It’s all proceeding to start on the 24th of July.” Dick Pound, a former IOC vice president, said that the end of May seemed to be a possible deadline for the IOC to make a call on the Tokyo Olympics. But Coates told that the IOC didn't recognize the deadline and he thought Pound had backed away from it, too.

The latest measures, which include bans on gatherings of more than 500 people, came in the wake of the suspensionz(暂停) of sporting events in parts of the world affected by the virus outbreak. That has caused postponements and uncertainty for qualifying in some Olympic sports, although the IOC and Tokyo organizers have consistently said the games will go ahead as scheduled. As for athletes traveling to Japan from affected countries. Coates said some national Olympic committees were already preparing. “The Chinese are probably the best organized,” he told the SMH. “The Chinese are in various parts of Europe and the last I heard is they're bringing them all together in a university in Paris where they'll be fully contained, 600 of them, and they will go straight from there, straight into Japan. They won’t put anyone on a plane who has got coronavirus.

1What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?

A.To discover the victims of the virus.

B.To show that the virus is not terrible.

C.To study the harm of the COVID-19 illness.

D.To support the IOC'S idea for the Tokyo Olympics below.

2What can we infer from John Coates’ words in Para. 2?

A.All sports games will start on July 24.

    B.Australians should self-isolate at home.

C.The IOC will not cancel the Tokyo Olympics.

D.The Tokyo Olympics will be cancelled in May.

3What is the attitude of the IOC towards the Tokyo Olympic Games?

    A.Uncertain. B.Supportive.

    C.Negative. D.Dissatisfied.

4What is the main idea of the text?

A.IOC's confidence in the Tokyo Olympic Games.

B.The uncertain future of the Tokyo Olympic Games.

C.Peoples worries about the spreading of coronavirus.

D.Chinese athletes' preparation for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

  • 25、   This summer we said goodbye to unnecessary plastic waste. Starbucks committed to ________ plastic straws in all locations by 2020, IKEA banned all single-use plastics from its stores, and entire cities banned the use of plastic bags and straws. And now we have one more thing to add to our consciousness-raising list: People are starting to understand the ________ of contact lenses(隐形眼镜).

According to a new research out of the American Chemical Society, 20 percent of people who wear contact lenses throw them away in the toilet or sink. But as medical ________, contact lenses are specifically designed to be resistant in touch environments, and ________ they don’t biodegrade easily. Throwing contact lenses into toilet is particularly concerning because their size and ________ allow them to slip through filters(过滤器)meant to keep non-biological waste out of wastewater treatment plants.

The study found that the chemical and mechanical processing at these treatment facilities were unable to ________ break down contact lenses, leaving them as part of the treated water. Post-treatment wastewater is typically spread on fields, where contact lenses can make their way into surface water and cause environmental damage.

It may seem like a small thing, but with over 45 million contact ________ in the United States, all that plastic adds up. We are talking about 22 tons of contact lenses being improperly thrown away every year here, unnecessarily adding to the hundreds of thousands of tons of microplastics ________ in our oceans.

So what is the right way to throw away contact lenses?

It turns out that properly dealing with contact lenses is pretty ________. One option is to throw them in the garbage. While this will keep them out of our water ________, it sends them to landfill—which is not really any better. Unfortunately, you can’t just throw your contacts in the recycling bin and call it a day, either. Due to their size and packaging materials, recycling facilities typically cannot ________ contact lens processing, so they go to landfills. In order to actually be recycled, contact lenses need to be ________ at a specialty recycling facility.

This doesn’t mean that all eco-conscious contact-wearers must stick to glasses, though. Fortunately, in an effort to ________ the waste produced by contact lenses and facilitate the recycling process, some eye care companies have started their own recycling ________. Through these programs, individuals can ship their used contacts to TerraCycle (a company that ________ in recycling the hard-to-recycle) for free.
