22、Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing (令人迷惑的). A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They decided that miscommunications were always possible, even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”.
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks?” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means “yes”.
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was known for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today?” He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means no.
Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean “yes” or “no”.

23、 When I was a boy, I loved walking in the woods (树林) around my home. My mom told me not to travel so far that I couldn’t see our house. Being a naughty (淘气的) boy, however, I soon found myself going too far away, trying to know just how far I could go into the woods. I spent two hours looking for my way, I thought that I should leave a trail (痕迹) the next time I went for a walk.
The very next day I decided to try it. I walked into the woods and I couldn’t see my house. Then I broke a small branch (树枝) on a young tree to mark (标记). I walked further in and broke one more, and then another. I even used two flowers that were growing! I easily found my way home by myself that day, but I didn’t feel that proud (骄傲的). What’s worse, I felt really sad. I could see the trail I left in the woods along the way. Looking at the broken branches and dead flowers I was ashamed (羞愧的), so I asked myself never to do that again. From then on, I started to enjoy my time alone in the woods. I’d sit by the rivers and listen to them. I’d watch the birds and other cute animals. I’d smell the flowers. Not to disturb (打扰) is the best gift that I can give to them.
As a saying goes, “People will know who you are through the trails you leave”. As I grow older and smarter, I tried my best not to leave trails in my life like I did in the woods that day, I started to leave trails of love, kindness, goodness and also show others that they can do the same.
May you always leave trails of happiness.
