四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Text messaging, or simply "texting", which allows people to send and receive messages on mobile phones, becomes very popular today.

The advantages(优势) of texting are obvious(明显的). Texting helps to save money. If you have a few words to greet your families and friends on their birthdays or on some important festivals, sending messages can be cheaper than phone calling. Texting helps to save time. Even if you want to send a message to 100 people, you can do it one second. Texting helps you to "talk" to someone when he is too busy to answer the phone. Texting can also help you to "talk" to someone secretly if you don't want others to hear what you are talking on the phone. These advantages are so amazing that many people are crazy about it. They hold mobile phones in hands all day long, send dozens of messages each day, and even text while driving or walking.

However, texting has its disadvantages. Junk messages may come into your mobile phone box now and then. When your phone box gets too full, you can't receive any more messages. You may therefore miss some important information.

What's more, if you don't do texting properly, for example, texting while driving or walking, it can be dangerous. It can cause injuries(伤害) and even death. It was reported that about 6,000 people were killed and half a million were injured for this reason each year. In Fort Lee, a small town in New Jersey, the USA, three people died because they walked into traffic while texting in 2011. Two researchers at Stony Brook University, New York found that texters are 60% more probably to have an accident than others. When people are texting, they don't notice other people or things around them. To reduce traffic accidents, all drivers of the USA are now not allowed to text while driving. About 32 countries have passed laws restricting the use of mobile phones while driving.

Texting is a wonderful way of communication. However, only when we use it properly, can we fully enjoy the fun it brings.

    1What’s the passage talking about?

    A.Mobile phones B.Text messaging C.Computers D.Festivals

C.6,000 people were killed and injured. D.Many people text to greet families and friends.

4The underlined word “restricting” probably means “_________” in English.

    A.not telling B.not allowing C.enjoying D.making

5This passage is written to tell us that __________.

A.we should do less texting B.texting has many advantages

C.texting is better than phone calling D.we should do texting properly

  • 25、   Earlier this year in Norway, people buried a steel bottle with plant seeds, a wristwatch and rock samples (样本) in it. Why did they do this? They were making a time capsule (胶囊).

Time capsules are small collections of goods or information that are stored somewhere safe. They can be opened by people many years later, giving future people a view of life in the past.

They may contain(包含)newspaper articles, popular music recordings and photos. Historians can use time capsules to learn more about societies that lived in the past.

One of the earliest time capsules was the Detroit Century Box. On Dec 31, 1900, the city picked several photos and letters to be placed in a box. The box was then locked until Dec 31, 2000.

The things inside the capsule give us a look at Detroit in the past. There were photos of people and places, as well as letters written by local people. Some of them even gave predictions for the future. One person predicted that Detroit would have a population of 4 million by 2000. But in fact, the city’s population was about 951,000 that year, according to historydetroit.com.

Humans have even sent time capsules into space! The US sent two capsules into space on the Voyager spacecraft (旅行者号航天器) in 1977. They’re called the Voyager Golden Records. They contain sounds and pictures that show the diversity of human life and culture. For example, they have music by classical composer Beethoven and pictures of plants, insects and landscapes (山水风景). The Voyager spacecraft has traveled far away from our solar system. It is hoped that aliens might find the time capsules someday and learn about us.

    1What is a time capsule?

A.A collection of medicine buried deep underground.

B.A small collection of things stored in a safe place.

C.A store selling newspapers from the past.

D.A video where future people can see the past.

2How long was one of the earliest time capsule, the Detroit Century Box locked?

    A.For 50 years. B.For 100 years. C.For 117 years. D.For 200 years.

3From the things in the Detroit Century Box, we may learn________.

A.what people wore in the past B.what the city was like in 1977

C.what would happen to the city in the future D.the real population of the city in 2000

    4The Voyager Golden Records ________.

A.were sent into space in 2000 B.contain sounds, pictures and insects

C.have traveled far from the solar system D.have been found by the aliens

5What is the best title for the passage?

A.What does a time capsule contain? B.Why did people make a time capsule?

C.The Detroit Century Box, the earliest time capsule D.The time capsule, a gift for the future

  • 26、My Dad, a Superhero

When I was only seven, my family took a road trip to San Francisco. My father was driving our family car along the highway. The rain was pouring down so heavily that each drop of rain felt as if it were going to break the windshield (挡风玻璃).

I wasn’t scared. The downpour fascinated me. However, my brother, who is only one year younger than me, was annoying me with his unfriendly hits. I tried hard to stop him but failed. I could only complain to Mom and our sister about the fighting in the backseat, but it was useless.

My father, who was driving, knew the way to stop us from fighting. So he said, “Boys, do you know that I have learned magic?”

My brother and I stopped immediately. “What?”

My father replied, “Do you want me to show you some magic?”

I felt so excited that I jumped out of my seat. Even my brother was curious about what Dad was saying. It was every child’s dream to have a superhero father.

“I have the ability to stop the rain from falling. It’s only for short periods of time, so you have to pay close attention,” he said.

I was speechless. This seemed to be an impossible trick, even for a superhero. I could only stare at him through the rearview mirror (后视镜), wondering if the magic could really stop the rain.

“Are you ready?” he asked. “Yes!” we both answered.

“Okay. Let me collect my powers.” There was a short pause. “Okay. First, I have to say the magic words ‘Abra Cadabra’. Here we go...Abra Cadabra!”

And just like that, for one second, the rain stopped! It was a miracle! I was shocked. My dad really was a superhero. How could I not have known? For years, he must have hidden his magical weapons in the garage. I bet his old car was just a cover so that the bad guys wouldn’t know who he really was.

“Wow!” I said to my brother, who seemed to be just as amazed as I was. “Wow...” was all he could say, too.

Then our car drove under another overpass (高架桥), and for sure, the rain would stop for a while again.

  • 27、Taiwan is famous for its food. To many of us, it is like heaven for foodies (吃货). Whether you go to restaurants or night markets, there will always be delicious food. The following are four classic Taiwan dishes.

    Oyster omelet(蚵仔煎;牡蛎煎)

It seems like it would be easy to make an omelet. But the special ingredients (成分) are what make the oyster omelet unique (独特的). They include oysters, bean sprouts (豆芽) and sweet potato starch (薯粉). What makes a good oyster omelet? People from Taiwan have their own secret — The bigger the oysters, the better.

    Coffin (棺材) bread

The name may sound scary but the food is just the opposite. People cut the toast (吐司面包) into the shape of a box and make a lid () with the rest. The lid makes it look like a coffin. In the “coffin”, there is a seafood soup with pork, mushrooms, peas and carrots. Just break off bits of the bread walls as you eat your way through the soup.

    Drunken Chicken

Drunken Chicken dishes in Taiwan are usually cooked with Shaoxing wine. Some restaurants even serve these dishes with lots of herbs and vegetables. If you like eating meat but don’t want to put on weight, you could try this instead of fried and oily street food.

    Beef noodles

This simple dish means a lot to the city of Taipei. They even have a festival for it every year. Put hand-pulled noodles in a spicy (辣的) soup, top it with beef, vegetables, and pickled greens (腌菜), and a bowl of tasty beef noodles is finished. Most places don’t make the soup too spicy because Taiwanese are not traditionally used to be heat.
