25、Every school day, we use schoolbags to carry all of our things to school. They are a big part of our lives. But have you ever thought about the history of the schoolbag?
In the Han Dynasty(汉朝), students in old-style private schools used bamboo boxes to carry books to school. People consider the bamboo boxes to be the earliest schoolbags. They were usually two or three layers(层) in the box. Kids put different things like books, brushes, ink stones(砚) and paper in the boxes.
Hundreds of years later, people developed a new kind of schoolbag called the budai, or the “hip-pocket”. The budai was lighter than the bamboo box. With the founding(成立) of the People’s Republic of China, military rucksacks(军用帆布包) became popular. Many people carried them when they were in school. Ask your grandparents or parents about these bags. Maybe they can tell you about their experiences of carrying them when they were in school.
A new style of schoolbags has appeared in recent years. Many of them have colorful and fashionable designs(时尚的设计) on them, such as pictures of cartoons or pop stars. And they are more comfortable to use. Some students pull wheeled bags filled with heavy textbooks and others carry backpacks.
Schoolbags are still changing. Can you imagine what future schoolbags will be like?

26、I arrived in the UK last weekend to learn English. So far I have already made a few friends and had some traditional English food there. But after having three days of hamburgers, sandwiches and potatoes, I thought none could be more delicious than Chinese food , especially my favorite—huo guo. You can’t imagine how excited I was when I got to know that there was going to be a free meal of hotpot to welcome the new students. On the way to the canteen, I seemed to smell huo guo in the air.
To my surprise, when I went into the room I didn’t see any of huo guo. Where was it? With many questions in my mind, I sat down to have the free meal. After talking with an English girl, I got to know that Chinese huo guo is completely different from hotpot. Chinese huo guo is written in two words—hot pot, and hotpot, one word, is a traditional English dish.
Hotpot is made from mutton and onion. On the top are pieces of potatoes. People put it in the oven all day in a heavy pot on a low heat. It takes very little effort to prepare. You can often see it at parties in the UK because it’s easy to prepare for a large number of people and is not expensive.

27、At home during suppertime, Pete announced, “Baba Olena wants us to come for Easter dinner.” Mom shook her head, “That’s sweet, but I don’t think so.” Dad laughed, “I wouldn’t want to seem rude if I didn’t like her cooking. Can you tell her thanks but we already have plans?”
Pete sighed. His parents hardly knew Baba Olena. They didn’t know about her pastries (糕点) and funny sayings. All they saw was an Ukrainian woman with strange hair and a yard full of chickens.
On Easter Sunday, they passed Baba Olena’s house as they headed for Dixie’s Diner. When they arrived, they found the diner was dark, and no cars were in front of it. “What?” said Dad. “They’re always open!” “Not today,” Mom said. “Guess we’ll be making sandwiches.”
Across the street, Baba Olena stepped out of the house, waving to them.
Pete shouted, “Looks like Baba’ s expecting us.” “We can’t go there, Dad said, but Baba was hurrying over.
“You came! I’m so happy,” she said. “This morning 1 saw the diner is closed and thought maybe you will come.”
Inside, Pete’s parents sat stiff (僵硬地) as yardsticks while Baba was busy with her pastries happily. Dad looked at something red on the table. “What’s this?” “Beet (甜菜) salad. I use the juice for my hair. “Baba and Pete smiled at each other.
“And this—” She set down bowls of what looked like little half-moon pastries -“is Ukrainian stuffed dumplings. These have cabbage filling; those have potato. No crane today.”
Mum looked at her, open-mouthed.
Pete laughed and explained about the “crane” chips. Dad and Mum laughed, too.
Mum took a small bite. “Delicious!” “Oh, good you like it.” Baba said.
By the time she cut the round Easter bread, everyone was talking. “Now I see why Pete wanted to eat here,” Dad said. Mum nodded. “And why he speaks highly of you nonstop.”
Later, Baba brought out the basket of eggs. “It’s an old Ukxrainian tradition to play with Easter eggs,” she said. “See, Pete, hold yours to mine, end to end, like this. The egg that doesn’t break, wins.”
Pete held his egg ready. “I already won something,” he said.
