四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Basketball, running and swimming are popular events at the Olympics. But there are also some events that are not as popular. Some are even very strange. Let’s see if you have any knowledge about the following events.

    Tug-of-war

This event started in 1900 and left the Olympics in 1920. The team wins if they pull the rope past a certain point first. Interestingly, more than one team from a country can enter in this event. This makes it possible for one country to win several medals.

    Rope climbing

It first appeared as an Olympic sport in 1896. The climber who spends the shortest time reaching the top is the winner. The rope used to be 15 meters long. Years later, it was shortened to 8 meters, for some reason. After 1932, there was no rope climbing at the Olympics.

    Race walking

In race walking, walkers have to win the race by walking. To make sure that they don’t run, race walkers must have one foot on the ground at all times. Race walking has been an Olympic sport since 1904. Men enter 20-kilometer and 50-kilometer races; women only race 20 kilometers.

【1】Which of the following events left the Olympic in 1920?

    A.Rope climbing.

    B.Basketball.

    C.Tug-of-war.

    D.Race walking.

【2】How long was the rope in rope climbing in 1896?

    A.8 meters long.

    B.15 meters long.

    C.20 meters long.

    D.50 meters long.

【3】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Only one team from a country can enter Tug-of war.

B.Rope climbing first appeared in the 1932 Olympics.

C.Women in race walking can enter the 50-kilometer race.

D.Race walking is still an event at the Olympic Games today.

  • 25、   Think of life as a game in which you are playing with five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit and you keep all of them in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce(弹跳) back.

But the other four balls, family, health, friends and spirit, are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be broken. They will never be the same. You must understand that and try to have balance in your life. How?

Don’t look down on your worth by comparing(对比) yourself with others. It is because we are different and each of us is special.

Don’t let other people set goals(目标) for you. Only you know what is best for yourself.

Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.

Don’t be afraid of difficulties. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.

Don’t shut love out of your life by saying it’s impossible. The quickest way to receive love is to give it; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly(紧紧地); the best way to keep love is to give it wings.

Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you’ve been, but also where you are going.

Don’t be afraid to learn. Knowledge is a treasure you can always carry easily.

Don’t use time or words carelessly. You can’t get them back. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift; that’s why we call it “the present”. Life is not a competition, but a trip, step by step.

1The passage tells us not to ________ because everyone is special.

A.look down on your worth by comparing yourself with others

    B.be afraid to learn

    C.run through life so fast

2The sentence “Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.” means that “________.”

    A.Nothing is possible

B.If we don’t give up, there is always hope

C.You should learn to give up

3Why can’t we use time carelessly?

    A.Because time is too expensive.

    B.Because time never returns.

    C.Because we are too poor.

4If you run through life so fast, you will ________.

A.lose your own treasure that you can always carry easily

B.lose love by holding it too tightly

C.forget not only where you’ve been, but also where you are going

5According to the passage, which is the best title?

    A.Nothing Is Impossible

B.Glass Balls Are Easy to Be Broken

C.Treat Your Life in a Right Way

  • 26、It’s always a happy moment when you get some pocket money (零花钱). But have you ever thought about how to spend your pocket money wisely? Here is some advice.

    Make a list.

When you get your pocket money, don’t get too excited. We all have a lot of things that we want. But do you really need them? That’s why it is necessary to make a list before you spend money. Start with the thing you want most. You can also write down how much it costs or how important it is in your life. By doing this, you will see if it is really necessary to buy it.

    Help others.

How about being more selfless (无私的) and using your pocket money to help others? We all know that there are many people in the world who are in need of our help. Helping others brings out the best in us and is one of the greatest joys in our lives. So consider using your pocket money to do something useful and helpful, and feel how you can make a difference.

Save as much as you can.

There is an old saying that “Money doesn’t grow on trees. ” If you spend all your pocket money right away, you’ll have no money until your next “pay day”.

A wallet sometimes might not be the best place to save money because it may make it easier for you to spend your money. • 27、   Many of us feel uneasy when someone stands too close to us, talks to us too loudly or makes eye contact(接触) with us for too long. But have you ever wondered why those things make you uncomfortable?

It’s all about personal peace, which means not only an imaginary space around the body, but also the space around all the senses. People feel that their space is being violated(侵犯)when they meet with an unwelcome sound, smell or look. This is probably why a man on a crowded bus shouting into his mobile phone or a woman next to you putting on strong perfume(香水)makes you feel angry.

Whether people have had a stronger wish to protect their personal space in recent times is hard to say. Yet studies of airlines show that people have a strong desire(渴望)to have space to themselves. In survey(调查)by TripAdvisor, a travel website, people said that if they had to pay more for some extra service, they would rather have larger seats than extra food.

Although people may need their personal space, some hardly realize it. For example, people on a bus who hold newspapers in front of their faces to read in fact keep a distance from strangers. Go and watch a library table. You will notice that one of the corner seats will usually be taken first, because they are the farthest way. What if someone sits opposite to you? Maybe you will pile up books as if to make a wall.

Preference(偏好)for personal space are different from culture to culture. Scientists have found that Americans generally prefer more personal space than people from other cultures. In Latin(拉丁人的)cultures, however, people are more comfortable standing close to each other.

    【1】The writer mainly________in this article.

A.tells us how to achieve personal space

B.explains what personal space people need is

C.introduces some knowledge about personal space

D.argues for the importance of keeping personal space

【2】Who might feel his personal space is safe according to the passage?

A.A person who has to sit next to a lady putting on strong perfume.

B.A person who has been watched by a stranger for a long time.

C.A person who hears strange noises when reading at home.

D.A Latin boy who is chatting with a friend sitting close to him.

【3】What can we know from the survey by Trip Advisor?

A.People need a smaller personal space in recent times than before.

B.People have a strong desire for personal space in recent times.

C.There are not enough seats on the plane to meet people’s needs.

D.Food service is better provided than seats on the plane.

【4】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The space around the body is more needed than that around all the senses.

B.If you hold newspapers on the bus, your personal space won’t be violated.

C.People usually choose the corner seats first in a library for personal space.

D.Different cultures share the same preferences for personal space.
